The Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania has become a staging area for terrorism and the establishment of a universal caliphate.

The latest evidence supporting this claim comes from Faisal Shahzad’s trip to Matamoras, at the foothills of the Poconos, where he purchased boxes of M-88s from a fireworks store.

The high powered firecrackers, which sell for $10.00 a box, ended up as detonators for a crude bomb that Shahzad tried to set off in Times Square last weekend.

Matamoras is less than an hour’s drive from the George Washington Bridge.

Fifteen miles from Matamoras is Saylorsburg, a sleepy rural Pocono community, where powerful Turkish pasha Fethullah Gulen has established a 45 acre mountain fortress. The fortress remains protected by 100 Turkish guards and a sentry post. Local residents have complained of automatic gunfire coming from the complex and of a low flying helicopter that surveys the area for would-be intruders.

Gulen, who has been labeled “the most dangerous Islamist in the world,” has amassed a fortune in excess of $25 billion for use in the restoration of the Ottoman Empire and the established of a New Islamic World Order.

In 1998, Gulen fled to the United States from his native Turkey to avoid prosecution on charges that he was attempting to undermine Turkey’s secular government in order to establish an Islamic republic.

With his vast fortune, Gulen established the Justice and Democratic Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma or AKP) which gained control of Turkey in 2002.

Under the AKP, Turkey has transformed from a secular state into an Islamic country with 85,000 active mosques – - one for every 350- citizens – - the highest number per capita in the world, 90,000 imams, more imams than teachers and physicians – - and thousands of state-run Islamic schools.

The tentacles of Gulen’s movement now stretch throughout central Asia, including the newly formed Russian republics of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmernistan which are becoming increasingly Islamic and radicalized.

Gulen has also established thousands of madrassahs (Islamic religious schools) throughout the world, including 85 in the United States.

The Poconos have lured other radical Muslims, including the six terrorists who sought to inflict mass casualties at Fort Dix, a military base in New Jersey.

In February 2007, the would-be terrorists rented a place in Big Bass Lake, a gated community of 1,400 homes in the tiny Pocono town of Gouldsboro.

During their month-long stay at Big Bass Lake, the six radical Muslims – - all foreign-born and in their 20s, rented a public firing range to practice attacks on the military base.

Because of its close proximity to New York and other major metropolitan areas, the Poconos appears an ideal place to launch terror attacks on U.S. soil.

“We still have very remote areas. These people can come and get lost,” says Robert G. Werts, program manager for the Northeast Pennsylvania Terrorism Task Force.

John Horgan, director of the International Center for the Study of Terrorism at Penn State University, maintains that it’s not unusual for terrorists and radical Islamists to seek out areas that lie beneath the radar screen.

“It’s precisely because they’re overlooked that they’re attractive,” Mr. Horgan says. “In these rural areas, you’re not subject to the intense surveillance.”

Islamists Threaten to Attack Belgium Over Burqa Ban

(Reuters) - Belgian authorities are analysing a video containing threats to attack the country and other European states if they enforce a ban on full face veils, government officials said on Thursday.

Belgium’s lower house of parliament approved a bill last week that would enforce such a ban but it is unlikely to become law soon because the government has collapsed and parliament is due to be dissolved. France is also considering a ban.

A text written in English on a video posted on the Internet says: “If you ban the burqa, hijab or niqab (veils) … then you will see (a) very dangerous situation in your countries.”

It shows veiled women, some armed with guns, armed men and children carrying weapons and ammunition. They did not identify themselves.

Suspicious package clears Times Square streets - UPDATED - ALL CLEAR

NEW YORK – Police have cleared streets around Times Square after finding a cooler left on a sidewalk on the same block where a failed car bomb was found over the weekend.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says police have created some distance between the cooler and people. He says they are "in an abundance of caution" and looking into whether the cooler was abandoned by someone.

Browne says no buildings have been ordered evacuated. Three blocks around Times Square were closed as a precaution because the cooler was found about a block from where a failed car bomb was found Saturday night.

No other details were immediately available. The call was received about 1:15 p.m.

New recycling bins with tracking chips coming to Alexandria

Alexandria residents soon will have to pay for larger home recycling
bins featuring built-in monitoring devices.

The City Council added a mandatory $9 charge to its residents' annual
waste collection fee.

That cash -- roughly $180,000 collected from 19,000 residents-- will
pay for new larger recycling carts equipped with computer microchips,
which will allow the city to keep tabs on its bins and track resident
participation in the city's recycling program.

"If you know who's participating in the programs, you can focus your
education and outreach to those who are not participating," said Stacy
Herring, Alexandria's recycling coordinator.

(NY Daily News) A proposal to build a mosque steps from Ground Zero received the support of a downtown committee despite some loved ones of 9/11 victims finding it offensive.

The 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center was unanimously endorsed by the 12-member Community Board 1's financial district committee.

The $100 million project, called the Cordoba House, is proposed for the old Burlington Coat Factory building at Park Place and Broadway, just two blocks from the World Trade Center site.

"I think it will be a wonderful asset to the community," said committee Chairman Ro Sheffe.

Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf, who helped found the Cordoba Initiative following the 9/11 attacks, said the project is intended to foster better relations between the West and Muslims.

He said the glass-and-steel building would include a 500-seat performing arts venue, a swimming pool and a basketball court. "There's nothing like it," said Rauf, adding that facilities will be open to all New Yorkers.

Daisy Khan, executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement and a member of the Cordoba Initiative's board, said donations are being sought to pay for the construction.

Khan said the project has received little opposition.

Cordoba was the Seat of the Islamic Caliphate, and the location of the Grand Mosque.

This Mosque is named after the Seat of the Caliphate for a reason. I'm quite sure this "Ro Scheffe" shithead doesn't even know the fucking history.

Waxman didn’t simply request documents related to the write down issue. He wanted every document the companies created that discussed what the bill would do to their most uncontrollable expense: healthcare costs.

The request yielded 1,100 pages of documents from four major employers: AT&T, Verizon, Caterpillar and Deere (DE, Fortune 500). No sooner did the Democrats on the Energy Committee read them than they abruptly cancelled the hearings. On April 14, the Committee’s majority staff issued a memo stating that the write downs were “proper and in accordance with SEC rules.” The committee also stated that the memos took a generally sunny view of the new legislation. The documents, said the Democrats’ memo, show that “the overall impact of health reform on large employers could be beneficial.”

Nowhere in the five-page report did the majority staff mention that not one, but all four companies, were weighing the costs and benefits of dropping their coverage.

It’s not just the calculus of mandates and penalties that has employers considering the option of dumping health care and paying more in salaries instead. The mandate to keep “children” on plans until the age of 26 has employers seeing a steep cost curve. For Caterpillar alone, the 26-year-old mandate will cost over $20 million a year. Under those conditions, the penalties look pretty good.

Passenger Questioned After Flight Lands At BWI

LINTCHICUM, Md. (AP) ― Airport officials say police are questioning a passenger who exhibited suspicious behavior during a Continental Express' approach to BWI airport.

Airport spokesman Jonathan Dean says it happened aboard Flight 2699, operated by ExpressJet Airlines, from Newark, N.J., to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Thursday about 6 p.m. He says the crew noticed a passenger behaving suspiciously and the captain declared a precautionary alert.

The plane, a regional jet Embraer-145 carrying 44 passengers and three crew members, landed safely and passengers were allowed to leave the craft. There were no injuries.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police were questioning the passenger.

Comedy Central might censor every image of the Prophet Muhammad on "South Park," yet the network is developing a whole animated series around Jesus Christ.

As part of the network's upfront presentation to advertisers (full slate here), Comedy Central is set to announce "JC," a half-hour show about Christ wanting to escape the shadow of his "powerful but apathetic father" and live a regular life in New York City.

In the show, God is preoccupied with playing video games while Christ, "the ultimate fish out of water," tries to adjust to life in the big city.

"In general, comedy in purist form always makes some people uncomfortable," said Comedy Central's head of original programming Kent Alterman.

When asked if the show might draw some fire, especially coming on the heels of the network's decision to censor the Muslim faith's religious figure on "South Park," Alterman said its too early in the show's development to be concerned about such matters.

"We don't even know what the show is yet," he said.

The owner of Gravity Fitness in Marblehead says gym members have complained about the American flag hanging inside the gym.

The Fitness club's owner, 23 year-old Mark Shea, hung the 12 foot long flag from the gym rafters on Friday and had over a dozen complaints by Monday.

Some have complained that the flag blocks gym televisions, while some members have gone as far as to say that the flag is offensive.

One members was quoted to say "It's like putting a Jesus cross in my face."

NO IT IS NOT, YOU STUPID LIBTARD. IT IS THE FLAG OF YOUR COUNTRY, NOT A SYMBOL OF A RELIGION WHICH YOU, AS I, DO NOT FOLLOW. YOU LIVE HERE, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP.

Another member feels the exact opposite and said "This is America. If you don't like to see the flag you can move somewhere else."

Shea did move the flag so it would not block the TVs but said now the flag is going to stay right where it is. He also said if the complaining members decide to leave the gym he will just have to live with that.

I learned about this from a radio talk show who said that Mr. Shea lost a son in Iraq or Afghanistan. I will find out more about this tomorrow.

Hell will be raised. All suggestions as to how will be gratefully received. Meanwhile I will be finding out where to get a whole lotta flags cheap.

Hanover Street cleared; robotic devices sent to inspect bus during bomb scare

Five hours after police were called to the area of the High-Hanover parking garage for a report of a possible bomb aboard a Greyhound bus, police cleared Hanover Street of onlookers and media, while one man remained on the bus and robotic devices were sent in to inspect the scene.

Sixteen other passengers walked away from the bus two hours after the initial call, with their hands in the air, down the middle of Hanover Street, flanked by SWAT team members.

By 5:30 p.m., according to Schwartz, police had deployed at least two robotic devices, one of which contained video equipment, to inspect the bus.

"We certainly would like him to get off the bus," said Portsmouth Police Capt. Mike Schwartz of the man that remained on board at 5 p.m.

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday, police and firefighters responded to the area of the High-Hanover parking garage, where they surrounded a Greyhound bus while watching a subject inside. Shortly afterwards emergency responders began evacuating nearby businesses.

Police Chief Lou Ferland said police had received information that there may be a subject on the bus with a bomb.

According to Schwartz, 17 people were on the bus, the driver was not on board during the response, and there had been phone contact with a passenger on the bus, which had stopped in Portsmouth while en route to Boston, Mass. from Portland, Maine.

As the scene unfolded, city police were joined by other local, state and federal agencies including Exeter and Hampton police, the Seacoast Emergency Response Team (SERT), a K-9 unit from Dover, the N.H. State Police bomb disposal unit, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), immigration and customs officials and the FBI. At approximately 12:30 p.m. an armored vehicle was called in from Rye.

Police urged people to stay away from the downtown area.

At 1 p.m. Schwartz said police had been talking with passengers on the bus but have not asked or directed anyone to remain there, and that police were not calling the scene a hostage situation. "The call (from a passenger) to us was a concern based on an observation," said the captain. "We're making the situation as safe as possible."

At approximately 1:30 p.m. passengers exited the bus with their hands up, and one man remained on the bus and appeared to be handcuffed.

SERT members gathered the passengers, who appeared to be in handcuffs, in the High-Hanover parking garage before police transported them to the Portsmouth station for interviews by local police and the FBI, according to Schwartz.

By 2:40 p.m., according to Schwartz, police had attempted to establish phone communication with the man who remained on the bus, and stressed that police were not naming anybody a suspect at that time.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., emergency officials were preparing to inspect the bus with a motorized robotic device which, according to Schwartz, did not necessarily indicate the presence of a bomb, but contained video capabilities which could be used for inspection.

Approximately 20 responders were seen exiting a large N.H. Department of Safety vehicle and boarded another bus which drove away from the scene.

State and city officials on scene included N.H. Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young, Portsmouth Mayor Tom Ferrini, and Father Angelo Pappas, the Portsmouth Fire Dept. chaplain.

Portsmouth High School sophomore Robert Swan said he received a text message about the incident, and that within ten minutes word of the event was all over the school. Swan said all after-school programs were canceled as a precaution, and that many students' facebook pages indicated they had joined onlookers downtown to see what was happening.

N.H. Governor John Lynch, at the Emergency Operations Center in Concord, said in a brief statement that the situation remains fluid and could go on for some time.

Restrictions were put on air travel in the area, which kept television helicopters from flying overhead at closer than 3,000 feet.

According to Schwartz, police had not recovered any type of device from the bus.

As indicated in the blue highlighted paragraph, even with this detailed coverage the facts are confused -- did the passengers have their hands in the air, wear handcuffs, or both, or neither. But it seems significant that the governor thinks this situation "could go on for some time".

The M600, a Syrian copy of the Iranian Fateh-110, has a range of 300km and carries a half-ton warhead. If fired from southern Lebanon it would be capable of hitting Tel Aviv. Latest claims of arms transfers to Lebanon follow recent accusations by Israeli President Shimon Peres that Syria Hezbollah gave long-range Scud missiles, capable of inflicting heavy damage on Israel's settlements. Other Israeli government figures, including Defense Minister Ehud Barak, have since avoided repeating the claims and it is unclear whether Damascus could have delivered the 44-foot liquid-fueled missiles, handling which requires complex logistics, undetected. Yet doubts over the Scuds have not masked growing fear in the Israeli defense establishment over Hezbollah's rapidly expanding arsenal. On Tuesday the Israeli army's head of intelligence research, Brigadier General Yossi Baidatz, told the Knesset that the Scud transfer was the "tip of the iceberg". "Even today Hezbollah has missiles of all ranges types, including solid-fueled rockets that have a longer range are extremely accurate," Baidatz told the Knesset's foreign affairs and security committee. Baidatz warned that arms transfers were not sporadic but reflected long-term policy in Tehran and Damascus. "Syria and Iran carry out weapons transfers on a constant and structured basis in way that can't be described as simple smuggling - the transfers are official and well-organized," he said. He added: "Hezbollah's long-range rockets allow them to position launchers deep within Lebanese territory and cover ranges far greater than we aware of in the past. The militant group was far stronger today than in 2006, when it fought a war with Israel," Baidatz said. "Hezbollah in 2010 is very different to Hezbollah in 2006 in terms of military capability, which has advanced a great deal," he said, adding "Hezbollah is now regarded by the Syrians as a component of their defense establishment."

Andre Carson gathered Capitol Hill reporters around him and told the tale of racial slurs and menacing crowds on the verge of hurling rocks at the congressmen. Our first few videos showed the congressmen coming out of the Cannon Office Building, walking down the steps and into Independence Avenue from various angles. None of those videos revealed the racial hatred Rep. Carson conveyed to reporters that day and none of the videos showed a mob rushing or in any way impeding the congressmen.

When Rep. Carson gathered reporters around him to spread the myth of racial slurs being hurled "fifteen times" he painted the protesters not just as racists, but as a terrorist threat. We know this, because Kerry Picket of the Washington Times recorded Rep. Carson as he explained it all to eager reporters.

KERRY PICKET (Wash. Times): Do you think the people outside are generally dangerous or no?

REP. CARSON: Oh absolutely. I worked in homeland security. I'm from intelligence, and I'll tell you, one of the largest threats to our internal security...I mean terrorism has an Islamic face, but it really comes from racial supremacist groups. (inaudible) Its the kind of thing we keep a threat assessment on record [for].

PICKET: From groups like this?

REP. CARSON: Oh absolutely.

And we can now see this two pronged message continuing in the narrative from Democratic politicians and the media: The Tea Party protests are really about white rage and they are sowing the seeds for domestic terrorism. This was the message delivered by Rep. Carson that afternoon and that is the message the media has run with.

Only problem is, we can't find any proof to back up Rep. Carson's story. And when challenged, he hides behind the legend and stature of Rep. Lewis. The constant challenge of "Are you calling Rep. John Lewis a liar?" must now be answered with "Are you calling Rep. Andre Carson beyond reproach?".

Tea partiers are indistinguishable from Aryan Nation as a threat to the individuals in the nation and the nation itself?

What nation would that be Rep Carson?

Portsmouth Neighborhood Evacuated Man On Greyhound Bus Has "Device"

Part of downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has been evacuated because of a report of a device found on a Greyhound bus making a stop between Bangor and NYC. So far I've seen 4 different reports on this, all 4 with different details. Here's what FOX has so far:


New Hampshire Police Investigate Bomb Threat on Bus

DEVELOPING: Police and fire officials are blocking streets in Portsmouth, N.H., around a Greyhound bus after a man reportedly threatened he had a bomb.

The state police explosives disposal unit has responded to the threat Thursday. Police evacuated residents and buildings in the area, including a Hilton hotel where an alarm sounded. A parking garage also has been closed.

The bus had left Bangor, Maine, and was en route to New York City. It was unclear whether the bus was occupied.

CNN has a bit more information on their news site:

Police said the area around Hanover, High and Market streets was closed.

News 9 reported that 17 passengers were still on the bus, but the bus driver had left the bus. There have been reports of a possible hostage situation, but Portsmouth Capt. Mike Schwartz said he wasn't sure why the passengers hadn't left the bus.

A SWAT team was also at the scene, and several businesses in the area were evacuated. The FAA also instituted a 3-mile no-fly zone around the area.

The Associated Press reported that the state explosives disposal unit and FBI were also at the scene.

Despite the heavy law enforcement presence in the area, police were set well back from the vehicle. Yellow caution tape blocked off the streets.

Gov. John Lynch's office said he went to the Emergency Operations Center in Concord and has been advised of the situation.

Sources told WBZ's Karen Anderson that a man on the bus was talking on a cell phone in what sounded like Arabic and English.

A woman apparently heard him say something about "a bomb is on the bus."

The woman told the bus driver, who then pretended there was a mechanical problem with the bus and pulled over in Portsmouth. The driver then called police.

Police have closed streets and evacuated businesses, including a Hilton hotel in the busy downtown area.

Two SWAT teams and the FBI are also on the scene.

This could be serious -- or the guy could have been saying "There's a bum on the bus" and was misheard. (It's happened before.) I am hoping this does not turn out to be a hostage situation.

UPDATED: Apparently the passengers are now off the bus. This WMUR site seems to have the most up-to-date coverage.

Terrorist in Mumbai sentenced to hang

India has just done some justice in the horrifying case of the murders that took place in Mumbai in late 2008:

The lone surviving terrorist in the November 2008 Mumbai massacre was sentenced to death on Thursday by an Indian judge for his role in the massive terrorist attack, one of the worst in the history of India.

During the three-day ordeal, 166 people were slaughtered and more than 300 were wounded. Six of the dead were Jews who were at the Nariman Jewish Center Chabad House, a target specifically chosen by terrorists. (Photos of the scene may be viewed by clicking here. Moishe and his nanny were subsequently brought by his maternal grandparents back to Israel, where Rivka herself was born and raised.

The Republican Party's best-connected political operatives have quietly built a massive fundraising, organizing and advertising machine based on the model assembled by Democrats early in the decade, and with the same ambitious goal -- to recapture Congress and the White House.

The new groups could give Republicans and their allies a powerful campaign apparatus separate from the Republican National Committee. Karl Rove, political architect of the Bush presidency, and Ed Gillespie, former Republican Party chairman, are the most prominent forces behind what is, in effect, a network of five overlapping groups, three of which were started in the past few months.

The operating assumption of Rove, Gillespie and the other organizers is that despite the historical dominance of Republican fundraising and organizing, the GOP has been outmaneuvered by Democrats and their allies in recent years, and it is time to strike back.

"Where they have a chess piece on the board, we need a chess piece on the board," said Gillespie, who is involved in all five groups in roles ranging from chairman to informal adviser. "Where they have a queen, we shouldn't have three pawns."

The network, which doesn't have a name, attempts to replicate the Democracy Alliance, an umbrella group -- founded in 2005 and funded by George Soros and other billionaires -- and to borrow tactics from liberal groups established to help Democrats regain power after eight years of the Bush administration.

The administration in Washington is trying to force on Israel a peace settlement with the Palestinians.By Moshe Arens

It is almost a year now that a certain ritual has marked the public discourse between Washington and Jerusalem. Israel gets a good slap in the face and a few days later someone in Washington announces that the U.S.-Israeli relationship is rock-solid. The Israeli prime minister is demeaned in Washington and a day later he declares that the U.S.-Israeli relationship is firm as ever.

Anybody who has been involved in fostering the U.S.-Israeli relationship over the years, so important to both countries, knows that things are not as they have been for the past 50 years. The relationship, which on occasion is being described in Washington as "unshakable and unbreakable," has for the past year been shaken up quite a bit. The administration in Washington is trying to force on Israel a peace settlement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a settlement that would involve Israel withdrawing to the 1949 armistice lines that were established after it repelled the armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, which were attempting to destroy the newborn state.

They want to set the clock back, seemingly oblivious of the many wars and acts of terror that were launched against Israel in the years since then, the serious threats that are being directed against Israel at present, the dramatic changes that have taken place in the past 61 years, and the Jewish people's internationally recognized rights to their ancient homeland. This bitter medicine needs to be taken by the people of Israel, it is argued, because it serves the interests of the United States, and in addition, the administration in Washington believes that it is also good for Israel.

For many years the differences between the United States and Israel were discussed in intimate forums and not taken public, in the common realization that venting in public the inevitable differences even among the best of friends would only harm the interests of both countries and give comfort and encouragement to their common enemies. Not since Dwight Eisenhower demanded that David Ben-Gurion withdraw the Israel Defense Forces from the Sinai and the Gaza Strip in 1957 has the White House openly challenged Israel. Now, the administration in Washington has no compunction about publicly airing its displeasure with Israel.

The recent visit of the U.S. vice president and the routine approval during his stay by a local planning body of construction plans in a Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem was turned into an "insult to the United States." It was followed by an angry telephone call by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and a subsequent attack on Israel in Clinton's appearance on U.S. television.

In the interim, soothing words were heard from Washington until Netanyahu's visit to the White House, where he was duly humiliated. Tom Friedman, the New York Times columnist close to the White House, reminded Israel in a recent interview of the generosity of the United States in granting Israel $3 billion annually for military assistance while America contends with a severe economic crisis. What for years was seen in Washington and Jerusalem as assistance that served the interests of both countries is now being depicted as largesse for which Israel needs to express its gratitude by accepting American demands.

The Netanyahu government has chosen to act as if nothing has changed, and that the occasional signs of displeasure coming from Washington can be appeased by minor or temporary Israeli concessions. The result seems to be the opposite. The Israeli government is seen in Washington as disingenuous and attempting to outsmart the White House.

The time has come to stop pretending. Whatever chance that may exist to conduct productive negotiations with Abbas is being hampered by the demands being made on Israel by Washington. They only provide excuses for Abbas to refuse to enter serious negotiations until these demands are met. He cannot be expected to be less of a Palestinian than U.S. President Barack Obama. While objective difficulties exist in any case because of Hamas' control of Gaza and Abbas' tenuous position in Judea and Samaria, outside pressure only makes things more difficult. Peace cannot be imposed. There is little doubt that the administration in Washington will learn this lesson sooner or later.

New York shuts bridge after truck found abandoned

NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York City's Triborough Bridge was shut down on Wednesday night after police said a truck, smelling of gas, was found abandoned on the busy thoroughfare.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said a worker on the bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx found the vehicle abandoned by its driver and apparently smelling of gas.

The New York police bomb squad was investigating the vehicle, law enforcement sources said.

Browne said the vehicle was a U-Haul rental truck with Arizona license plates. It was left on a Manhattan-bound service road leading from the Bronx, he said. Fire officials were responding.

The closure of the span, also known as the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, came days after a failed bomb attack on New York's Times Square that has heightened security concerns in America's most populous city.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the Times Square plot was the 11th thwarted attack on New York City since hijacked airliners destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers on September 11, 2001, killing more than 2,600 people.

Christian question: 'Interfaith dialogue' or 'useful idiots'? - Growing trend to meet with Muslims rings alarm bells for some

The effort among some Christian churches to meet with Muslims and dialogue about faith is a betrayal of the basic foundations of Christianity, asserts a critic of the developing trend.

"Useful idiots," is how Christian talk show host and Muslim analyst Ingrid Schlueter assessed the participants in a recent interfaith dialogue session between the Acts 29 Network-affiliated Harambee Church and MAPS, the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, a group that has connections to the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR.

WND previously reported an expert on the advance of radical Islam in the United States says the Muslim Brotherhood is effectively employing a strategy of presenting "Islam lite" to organizations, includingChristian churches.

The Muslim Brotherhood is the Sunni transnational movement founded in Egypt in 1928 that has spawned most of the major terrorist movements in the world, including al-Qaida and Hamas. It's aim is to make Islamic law supreme over the world.

The recent church plant, a spinoff of Seattle's Mars Hill megachurch, recently started a series of interfaith dialogue meetings with MAPS. Schlueter said there are complications.

"Harambee Church is pastored by Michael Gunn, who was a former pastor at Mars Hill Church. When I saw that they had actually worked with CAIR to sponsor this event I was shocked and really horrified," Schlueter said. "I know something of the background of CAIR. It's very clearly a group with terrorist ties, so much so that the government won't even work with them as of last year. They were named as unindicted co-conspirators in the Hamas funding case the government was investigating.

"I just couldn't believe that a church would actually serve as a propaganda base in effect for this Muslim group, what many call a Hamas front group in an evangelical church," Schlueter said.

A source in Washington state who is close to the Acts 29 Network says another reason the series of interfaith dialogues is a cause for concern is the Acts 29 Network's and Pastor Mark Driscoll's connections with Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren. The best-selling author of pastor of the Lake Forest, Calif., megachurch also is involved in interfaith dialogue, Schlueter said.

Driscoll has participated in conferences at Warren's Lake Forest, Calif., church and was listed as a speaker at Saddleback's Radicalis conference for youth in February.

Driscoll's assistant declined to forward WND messages to Driscoll's voice mail and recommended WND fill out a request on the church website to obtain comment. But Driscoll has not replied.

"It was April 20 when Rick Warren was at a Los Angeles synagogue with a group of imams and the rabbi from Temple Sinai. They were having an interfaith dialogue there," Schlueter said. "This is happening. Whether it's Mark Driscoll's Acts 29churches or whether it's Rick Warren, this is a growing trend and it disturbs me," the Crosstalk host said.

She said an April 22 edition of Jewish Journal included a photograph of Warren in which he appeared to be wearing a Muslim prayer cap.

"When I see photos like this, I see the influence of Islam in the church has gone a lot further than we think," Schlueter said.

A spokesman from Warren's Texas-based publicity firm, A. Larry Ross Communications, said Warren was wearing an Ethiopian Jewish cap in the photo.

Observers said while that may be the case, it leaves a questionable impression.

A Massachusetts pastor who asked not to be identified said real interfaith dialogue means being who you are.

"In real interfaith dialogue, each person brings their distinctives to the dialogue. Warren's donning of the Muslim cap in the synagogue is compromise," the pastor said.

Schlueter says appearances are important.

"It still looks like a kufi or taqiya, the Muslim prayer cap. But it doesn't matter if it's a yarmulke or an Islamic prayer cap. The point is that because he's sitting with a group of imams, a lot of people will think it's a Muslim cap," Schlueter said.

"When you do interfaith dialogue, you be who you are. So why didn't he participate as an evangelical Christian? Why did he compromise and wear something that will bring confusion?" Schlueter asked.

It was a year ago when Warren addressed the Islamic Society of North American convention, explaining he wanted to promote interfaith cooperation.

"I am not interested in interfaith dialogue but interfaith projects. As the two largest faiths on this planet – more than 1 billion Muslims and 2 billion Christians – as Muslims and Christians, we must believe in this. As more than half the world, we must do something to model what it is to live in peace, to live in harmony," Warren said in his ISNA speech.

Not all Christian leaders are alarmed by the developments. Harambee Church associate pastor Michael Ly, who's also the vice president of Peace Catalyst International, said the event was primarily to build relationships.

Ly said the event focused on discussing the two faith's perspectives on who Jesus is, but its purpose wasn't specifically aimed at evangelism.

"The event was to make more friends in the community and we have many neighbors who are our neighbors. There are as many as 75,000 to 100,000 Muslims in the Seattle-Puget Sound area. They're our neighbors," Ly said.

Ly said that CAIR officials didn't actually speak at the event, but were instrumental in helping organize it.

He said Washington state CAIR chapter president Arsalan Bukhari introduced him to the MAPS Redmond leader, "but from that point on, wasn't super heavily involved in organizing the event."

"But Arsalan helped get the Qurans we used," Ly said.

Calls and e-mails asking for comment on this story from Bukhari's office have not been returned.

Ly said the event was successful, and he maintains that the dialogue session achieved its objectives and opens the door for future evangelism opportunities.

"There were a lot of new friendships made between Muslims and Christians who were at the event. We're going to continue to have ongoing dialogues with the MAPS Muslim community as well as ongoing dialogues about Jesus and other parts of our respective faiths with other Muslim communities through the Seattle area," Ly said.

Leaders of the Acts 29 Network and Warren aren't alone in their satisfaction with the trend toward interfaith dialogue.

Former Michigan Rep. Mark Siljander recently published "A Deadly Misunderstanding: A Congressman's Quest to Bridge the Muslim-Christian Divide." He's also the founder of the Virginia lobbying firm Global Strategies.

Siljander said the Harambee Church's actions and others like it are a positive step.

"I'm very encouraged. As a believer myself, I'm very distraught over the strategy, not theology, applied by most Christians toward Islam. Outspoken Christians like Franklin Graham and others have caused tremendous and unnecessary gulfs between Christians and Muslims," Siljander said.

Graham recently was banned by the military from appearing at a National Day of Prayer event at the Pentagon because of his criticism of Islam's violence.

"Most Christians for the most part, the outspoken ones, will criticize Islam, their book and their prophet and say, 'Let's sit down and talk about Jesus.' Needless to say, that doesn't work," Siljander said.

"In the book that's been out 14 months now, I say that we discovered that if you sit down with not only a respectful attitude, with Muslims, their holy book, their prophet and the culture, and do so with the enthusiasm about the person of Jesus, we find that the Holy Spirit will take hold and bring the conversation where He wants it to take," Siljander said.

Schlueter, however, calls such meetings simply propaganda tools for radical Islam.

"Evangelical Christians are not seeing the false concept first of all of the interfaith services, where we share our view about Jesus and then the Muslims share their view about Jesus, is completely alien to the example in Acts chapter two," Schlueter said.

"The apostles got up and preached Christ crucified, the hope of the world. What we're seeing now is 'let's sit down and talk about your view about of this and let's watch how you pray with your prayer rug and we'll show you how we pray as Christians and we'll all go away and have some tea and cookies.' That's not evangelism," she said.

"We're not calling for hatred or intolerance or anything of that nature. But I do believe it is wrong for Christians to go knocking on the door of a local mosque or local CAIR office and say we'd like to have a Muslim official come to our church and we’ll sit and talk," Schlueter said.

"What they're doing is being useful idiots for propaganda purposes by CAIR with its terrorist ties and effort to promote Islam within the United States, the rule of Islam and the promotion of shariah law. If Christians are not going to be more discerning than that they are serving as useful idiots and promoting a doctrine that is counter to the Gospel of Jesus Christ," she said.

Pamela Geller publishes Atlas Shrugs, which along with Robert Spencer's Jihad Watch, reports on developments of Islam in the West.

Geller said any CAIR involvement should be of concern for a Christian.

"CAIR is a Hamas front, an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas funding case. Hamas is a jihad terrorist group. Several former CAIR officials are now in prison for terrorist activities. The FBI won't work with CAIR anymore, and is in fact investigating CAIR," Geller explained.

Geller also makes the tie between CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood.

"The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has called CAIR the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. CAIR's ties with the Muslim Brotherhood were, in fact, entered in evidence in the Holy Land terror trial. The Muslim Brotherhood's stated goal is one world living under Islamic law," Geller said.

"The Quran teaches that Christians are under Allah's curse for teaching that Jesus is the Son of God. The Muslim call to prayer calls Muhammad a messenger of Allah, and Muhammad taught that Christianity was just a twisted version of Islam. So what were the leaders of Harambee church thinking? What do the leaders of the Harambee church think of the worldwide persecution, oppression and subjugation of Christians living in Muslim lands?" Geller asked.

"By working with Hamas-tied CAIR, and letting the Muslim call to prayer sound in their church, they're showing their weakness and ignorance of the Islamic jihad program to conquer and subjugate Christians and other non-Muslims. Among the materials CAIR distributes in its outreach efforts in the U.S. is the book "Jesus: Prophet of Islam" by Mohammad Ata-ur-Rehman and Muslim convert Ahmad Thomson. CAIR also launched a $60,000 advertising campaign on Florida buses with the message Jesus was a Muslim. The signs read: 'ISLAM: The Way of Life of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad."

One Islamic expert who formerly worked with the U.S. government on terror said Muslims even use the writings of disaffected Christian.

"Muslims are making use of Bart Ehrman's commentaries on the New Testament, books that now deny the authority of the New Testament and portray Jesus as simply a man," he said. "You will never hear a Muslim say that Jesus is the Son of God."
