Sherman, let’s get into the wayback machine.
Set it for 1986 and ignore Mr Mister, please.
Here we are:
- The Immigration Reform and Control Act was passed and signed into law on November 6, 1986. The purpose of this legislation was to amend, revise, and reform/re-assess the status of unauthorized immigrants set forth in the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Now let’s fast forward to 2013 and a newspaper which NEVER in it’s history has endorsed a Republican for president
- WaPo -The last time Congress enacted sweeping immigration reform was back in 1986. That bill, signed by Ronald Reagan, looked a lot like the proposals being put forward today. There was a path to citizenship for existing illegal immigrants, coupled with tighter border enforcement.
There was just one problem — the 1986 reform didn’t work. The law was supposed to put a stop to illegal immigration into the United States once and for all. Instead, the exact opposite happened. The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the country soared, from an estimated 5 million in 1986 to 11.1 million today. (2013)
Here we are home again.
In choosing a man like Trump Henry Kissinger said :
“This president-elect is the most unique that I have experienced in one respect,” he said: “No baggage. He has no obligation to any particular group because he has become a president on the basis of his own strategy and a program he put before the American public that his competitors did not present. So that is a unique situation.”
Trump was elected to do TWO things. Make the border secure, and bring economic growth back to 4%. In other words that’s been his message since he started. Mr. Schumer properly representing a VERY progressive state and his state’s voter profile is doing his job.
1986 represents the FALSE POLITICAL PROMISE OF THE POLITICAL CLASS to a trusting public. We now have the most CYNICAL PUBLIC in the nation’s history.
Mr. Trump, if you cannot deliver on the priority messages of your ENTIRE POLITICAL EXISTENCE you and your entire cadre will be a MINOR footnote.
If Schumer does not see the light, enact the nuclear option in the Senate and get going on your priorities.
Do that and BOTH PARTIES will be shaking from top to bottom. Meet with McConnell and Ryan, and set it up.Get Schumer 1 on 1 and deliver that message with quiet and a bone chilling explanation as to why it’s compulsory to secure the border first. Offer a deal to have a dem co-write the reform act to be sponsored AFTER the wall is complete.
Tell them you will campaign in 2018 for any candidate who will cooperate on these two issues, and AGAINST any who oppose you.
A cynical public is watching. Be seen to do everything to get border security and 4% growth.
Do what Reagan was euchred into doing and in 2020 we will try something else, then and all this will be just another mistake in a pile of debris.
I believe a law authorizing building the southern wall is already on the books. Funding is another story but: The simple act of enforcing existing law will solve much of the problem. Immigration law has been flouted at every level of the federal gov't for three decades.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Trump will get any cooperation from the Senate on immigration issues for 4 years. He may not get any cooperation on anything. The Turtle has already said he won't back the "nuclear option" on anything including advise and consent. I strongly believe McCain will leave the Republican party shortly and Schumer will demand a power sharing arrangement. Turtle will acquiesce to avoid further Republican defections.
About the only option Trump has with the Senate is targeting Democratic senators in Red states up for reelection in 2018. Manchin has already announced support for Sessions. Who else? I don't know.
