Frances Kellor, Activism, and Me

I just finished writing my newest book, Founding Mother: Frances Kellor and the Quest for Progressive Democracy.  And the end of this book has occasioned some personal philosophical reflecting. You see, Frances Kellor argued that citizenship required political participation.  Personally, she dedicated her life to designing and implementing social reform.  And, I have lived by these precepts too. But my friends just want to have fun.  Is that okay?

In some ways circumstances call me to action.  If your neighbor’s house were on fire, would you not feel compelled to act?  Well, I believe the nation is going up in flames.  Therefore, I am compelled to act.  Kellor’s impoverished upbringing likely led to her making her first two books about defending exploited women.  My sense of emergency and her despair over injustice provide legitimate motives to social action.

Kellor implicitly denigrated domestic life.  She did not overtly say that women should leave their homes.  But she did descry domestic values that focused more on rumors of fidelity than those of tainted milk and immigrant exploitation.  She sought to shake women out of their private worlds via engaging them in basketball.  Women particularly needed to switch from the private to a public orientations to reach their potential and help America reach its.

Kellor’s private life is partially obscured.  She lived with her girlfriend Mary Dreier for 47 years.  And they took vacations together.  But her private letters rarely mention activism and her activism only implicitly addressed her lesbian romance. Kellor founded the National Urban League and international arbitration, ran the Americanization program, two Presidential campaigns and more. She had no children as she dedicated her life to public service. And for that she deserves our respect.

But people in my life watch T.V. and never mention politics.  And, without engagement I personally feel useless and unimportant.  Perhaps my constant striving for a cause has a touch of insecurity attached to it; I want to matter.  Writing Founding Mother, and so sharing Frances Kellor, gave me a sense of doing something important for the public. With its completion questions about public life and identity come to the fore.

At what point do we, Kellor and I, let people rest and live as private citizens?  Television is passive. But do I consider all who watch it worthless? How much public activism must one mix with their meaningless private consumerism and family raising to be considered a good citizen?

John Kenneth Press, Ph.D. is the author of Founding Mother: Frances Kellor and the Quest for Participatory Democracy.  www.franceskellor.com has more information.

No More Muslim Immigration

WE HAVE NO way of determining which Muslims subscribe to pure Islam. The reason this matters is that pure Islam is seditious. Islamic doctrine is more political than religious, and its sole political goal is the domination of Islam over all over religions and all governments.

It is a Muslim's religious duty to achieve that political goal.

When Muslims move to a country, a certain percentage of them start agitating for special considerations. They start to organize and influence the nation politically in a way that is good for Islam and bad for freedom and equality. When the percentage of the Muslims in a nation's population becomes high enough, they gain so much political power that freedoms and rights begin to disappear. (Watch this video to learn more.)

Given all this, until we have a way of determining who is dedicated to pure Islam, no more Muslims should be allowed to immigrate into free countries.

Does this seem extreme? It's not as bad as it might seem. We already choose who can immigrate and who cannot. We make the rules. This is our country, after all. We are not under any obligation to allow anyone to immigrate who wants to. They do it with our blessing or they don't do it.

So this policy is simply adding to the already-existing filter.

This is not racist. Islam is not a race; it's an ideology. The policy of stopping Muslim immigration is simply acknowledging the reality of the Islamic teachings. I know there are Muslims who reject the violent and intolerant verses of the Qur'an. But Islam also teaches taqiyya and we have no way of knowing who is sincere and who is deliberately deceiving us.

We should not take the chance, at least until we find some way to discern between people who genuinely reject the political goals of Islam and those who do not. In the meantime, we should stop all immigration into free countries by Muslims while we can. You can get the process started right now by
signing this petition.

Does signing a petition do any good? According to ThePetitionSite (the organization I used to create this petition), the answer is: "Yes — often, but the answer really depends on a number of factors. In general, the more a target organization is impacted by public opinion, the more effective are the petitions. In addition, ThePetitionSite enhances the credibility of online petitions by centralizing signature collection, structuring/regulating signature data collection and output, facilitating communication of petitions via fax, email, etc. and by using fraud-reduction technology. Remember — the effect of a petition usually goes far beyond the actual list of signatures. Journalists write stories about the petitions, signers get inspired to take additional actions, and other "potential targets" conform their behavior to avoid being a target."

Petitions can also exert an influence through two powerful principles of influence: Social proof and commitment and consistency. Petitions have been known to ignite important public debates.

When this petition reaches 50,000 signatures, I will make sure each member of the House and the Senate finds out about it. And I will make sure newspapers and magazines all over the country find out about it. Your signature will make a difference. Sign the petition today: No More Muslim Immigration.

EX-MARINE SUES TO DISPLAY ANTI-ISLAMIC CAR DECALS

I got this story from one of the Muslim newsletters I subscribe to. Courtney C. Radsch, Al Arabiya, wrote:

The ex-Marine’s car left little doubt that he despised Islam and equated it with terrorism.

“ISLAM = TERRORISM” read one decal. Another showed a cartoon boy urinating on a man wearing a turban. Two featured a stop symbol over “The KORAN” and another over the star and crescent symbol. Yet another said disgrace my flag and I will (defecate) on your Quran.

Jesse Nieto was angry over the death of his son in the 2000 bombing of the U.S.S.-Cole in Yemen by Islamist militants. But officials at the military base where he worked told him he could not display the anti-Islamic decals on federal property.

The 25-year veteran has filed a federal lawsuit accusing base officials of violating his constitutional rights by requiring he remove them and preventing him from driving on federal installations.

Nieto’s youngest son Marc, 24, one of 17 U.S. Navy troops killed in the terrorist attacks, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington D.C. The ban on driving the offending car in federal installations blocks him from visiting his son’s grave, the lawsuit alleges, though public transportation is readily available.

In July, Nieto’s supervisor at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where he worked as a civilian in an electrical shop, threatened to fire him if he did not remove the stickers and police issued him a ticket for displaying “offensive material.”…

But since the ban does not prohibit speech in public areas, but rather restricted speech in a military location, it is not a free speech issue, said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“I think it’s up to the military to decide what constitutes good order and discipline on military sites. I don’t think anyone is saying he can’t be an anti-Muslim bigot in public but we're talking about military sites,” Hooper told AlArabiya.net.

Here's another version of the story from Civil Liberty.

An Impressive Record of Success

SINCE I started Citizen Warrior, I've been trying to find things an ordinary citizen can DO that will actually help defeat the third jihad. ACT! For America (AFA) is the best thing I've found so far. They are organized and they are successfully defeating Islam's relentless encroachment in one of the most important places: In the political arena.

As it says in AFA's brochure, "ACT! for America is a nationwide organization of concerned Americans who want to be informed, who want to inform others, and who are uniting together to speak out against and resist the rising tide of Islamofascism — and the 'political correctness' that excuses it, rationalizes it, dismisses it, or blames America for it."

In a series of messages from the founder of AFA, Brigitte Gabriel, she wrote about what AFA has accomplished so far. The following are quotes from her recent letters:

Less than 14 months ago we launched ACT! for America, and we now have close to 50,000 members and nearly 230 local chapters.

In January we launched a petition and legislator-contact effort to help get “Rachel’s Law” passed in the New York state legislature. “Rachel’s Law” was introduced to protect New York authors from intimidation lawsuits filed against them in foreign jurisdictions. Thousands of members signed the petition and/or contacted New York legislators, and in late March the bill passed and was signed into law. The momentum from this victory led to the introduction of similar legislation, entitled “The Free Speech Protection Act,” in the U.S. Congress.

In the spring, with the help of the erstwhile leadership of former board member Jerry Gordon and our colleague Joseph Shahda, some key terrorist websites were taken offline by their American internet service providers. Later in the year this “dynamic duo,” working closely with the staff of Senator Joe Lieberman, helped bring about a new policy at Google/YouTube, which will no longer allow the posting of videos depicting terrorist acts perpetrated against Americans.

In March news stories reported that a charter school in Minnesota, the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TiZA), appeared to be engaging in impermissible promotion of Islam at its taxpayer-funded school. Through email alerts, the actions of our central Minnesota chapter, and other efforts aimed at the Minnesota Department of Education, we called on the Department to take action. It did, launching an investigation of the school. The investigation resulted in the Department of Education issuing two citations to the school for violations of law.

In June we launched a nationwide petition calling on Congress to convene hearings to review extremist materials found in American mosques, a petition we will present to the new Congress in early 2009.

In early August we learned that a Tennessee Tyson Foods plant had negotiated a labor contract with its employees that removed Labor Day as a paid holiday and replaced it with Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic holiday closing the month of Ramadan. In response to an email action alert we sent out, countless ACT! for America members called and emailed Tyson Foods to object to this action. Three days later Tyson Foods issued a press release reinstating Labor Day as one of its paid holidays and removing Eid al-Fitr as a required paid holiday for all employees.

So I want to thank you for all you did to help make all of this possible. When you forwarded one of our emails, or made a contribution, or contacted a chapter leader, or took action on one of our action alerts, you helped move us forward. You helped make these accomplishments possible. We are steadily growing, and our collective voice is getting stronger and harder for politicians to ignore.

We’ve had over 1,500 people sign up on our website to be members in just the past couple of weeks. Kelly Cook, our National Field Director, tells me we’ll add twice as many new chapters this month compared to the last six months.

In the words of our Founding Fathers, “these are the times that try men’s souls.” These are the times that test and strengthen our character. Thankfully, as difficult as things now appear they’re not yet as trying as the times our founders faced. We still have so much to be grateful for.

But we can’t afford to forget that our radical Islamist enemies not only welcome but thrive on chaos and confusion. They’re hoping we get so caught up in the economic challenges facing us that we’ll forget about them. They’re hoping we won’t see them using Shariah-compliant finance to exploit America’s financial challenges and uncertainties. They may very well launch a major terrorist attack in the very near future, calculating that a nation coping with economic distress led by a new President, inexperienced in foreign policy, will lack the will to respond. And without question they will accelerate their efforts to infiltrate every level of our government to manipulate public policy in their favor.

AFA is doing what needs to be done to overcome the political barriers to an effective defense against Islam's relentless encroachment.
I urge you to sign up for the AFA newsletter, to tell your friends about AFA, to join a local chapter in your area, and to read her two books.

Whoever is the most organized is going to win.

And please, those of you in other countries who know of a similar organization in your country, please leave contact information for the organization in the comments to this article. Thank you.

Some Americans WANT Shari'a

This just in from the United American Committee:

"Our billboard 'Sharia Law Threatens America' hit the TV news this evening first in Toledo on ABC after members of the local Islamic population began complaining.

"It appears there just may be some in the surrounding communities who support Sharia."

Resources To Submit Stories To

Here's another batch of contact numbers for a kind of "television-request activism:" Submitting stories to major stations. Every station has to fill their air time with stories. If they were to get 100 people submitting the same story idea to them, it might make them look into it.

A story covered by a major network is worth a lot of one-on-one conversations.

Get a Story on ABC

What if we unified our efforts? What if we chose a particular story and gathered our contacts to submit the story to the following programs? The organized effort alone would probably be newsworthy, but besides that, the story would undoubtedly get some attention. Below are ABC contact pages. What story would be a good one to submit?

How about the work of Mapping Sharia? And their findings that 75% of mosques in America are preaching the overthrow of the U.S. government? The extra attention for Mapping Sharia would be good for the cause, and no doubt Mapping Sharia would gain more financial support, and the work they're doing is very important.

Please Sign This Petition

This is what it says: I join in unity with all free people and nations in the world against Islamic religious hatred and intolerance being fomented against our human right of freedom of expression. We stand against the vicious threats of bodily harm and destruction being made in blatant protest of this basic right. We ask our leaders to stand up against these threats of intimidation. We ask them to send a strong message to the Islamic world and the perpetrators of hate and intolerance that threats to our freedoms or acts of violence and terror against us will not be tolerated. We demand that our governments of free and democratic nations and all of their legislators speak out in one voice denouncing this growing, fascist, religious assault against human rights and take immediate action to protect the freedoms therein from intimidation and fear of death or destruction.

Forging a New Tool

I loaned the DVD, Obsession, to a woman I work with last week. I brought up the subject by telling her that someone sent out 28 million copies of the movie. That really impressed her and made her want to see the movie.

I loaned her the movie, and the very next day, she got one of the free ones in her mail (not in her newspaper, which is how I thought they were being delivered). She brought it in for me to see. And by the way, she and her boyfriend watched it and were blown away by it. There are two more voters who will not be susceptible to taqiyya any longer.

When I looked at the free version, I thought, "Now here's something I could really use!" It is flat, small, and is basically like a brochure you open up with a DVD inside. On the brochure/case it says, "How Can You Help Fight Radical Islam?" And it gives four ideas and URLs. On the other side are quotes by authorities saying the DVD is worth watching.

The whole thing is a great little package. My wife said, "They should make these available to buy in packets of ten so we could share them with people."

What a great idea. I would love to be able to buy these in bulk to give away, if they were fairly inexpensive. And why wouldn't they be? They're already giving them away.

So I wrote to both the Clarion Fund and also RadicalIslam.org and urged them to make these DVD/brochures available in packs of ten or a hundred, or alternatively, to provide a service we could pay for that would send these to particular people.

I have found Obsession the easiest of all the DVDs to share because of the title. It is not offensive right off the bat to people who know nothing about Islam. And it has better production-values than my favorite DVD, Islam: What the West Needs to Know.

And in this new shorter version in a smaller package, it is even more shareable. It seems like a smaller commitment. It seems it would be easier for people to accept, and the brief information in the brochure-like "case" makes it even more so.

If you would like these to be available in packs of ten or fifty or a hundred, please join me in requesting it. Contact either or both of these places to urge them to make the packs available to the general public:
The ClarionFund.org:
media@clarionfund.org
Tel: 888-610-2221

RadicalIslam.org:
info@obsessionthemovie.com
Tel: 646-308-1230
Tell them who you are. Let them know you are influential, you're an active participator in this fight, you run a blog, you do a radio show, or whatever else you can tell them to convince them you're worth listening to. Let's get this tool available to us.

The Adopt-a-Mosque Program

Awhile back, I read the book, Terrorist Hunter: The Extraordinary Story of a Woman Who Went Undercover to Infiltrate the Radical Islamic Groups Operating in America, and a particular passage has been gnawing at me. Rita Katz (a Jew working for an NGO intelligence agency) had dressed as a Muslim woman and was registering to attend one of the many talks scheduled at a Muslim convention in Chicago. Under her burka, she had a hidden recording device.
"The clerk at the front desk directed me to the registration table in a far corner of the lobby," Katz wrote. "A queue had already formed there. As I joined it, I began to get jittery. This was an IAP conference. Islamic Association for Palestine. Many of the attendees, therefore, would be Palestinian. Any of them would recognize from my accent that I was an Iraqi. What if they asked me about it? What if they asked me other questions? What if I got tripped up on some detail of my story? The people at the registration table were very suspicious of anyone they didn't recognize or who didn't look Middle Eastern. They grilled several people standing in line. Some of the answers they approved, and those people they signed up. But just ahead of me in line was a guy who didn't look Mediterranean. Nor did he speak Arabic. They asked him a few questions. He tried to explain himself, but the organizers weren't buying his story. They were polite — and very firm that he was not getting in."
There are several points I'd like to make here about this incident, and then I have an idea for a possible action we can take. First off, Rita Katz looked Middle Eastern and she spoke Arabic, so she got in. And they preached firey jihad against the West and promoted sedition and the violent overthrow of the U.S. government. This was taking place in Chicago.

Second, these Muslims were practicing racial profiling. They were guilty of discrimination based on race.

Now, here's my idea. What if we went in groups of five or six (for safety) and brought either a hidden camera, an audio recorder, or a newspaper reporter with us, and tried to get into these conferences? Would they throw us out? If they did, isn't that newsworthy? Are they being racist? What do they have to hide?

What if this happened to mosques and Islamic conferences all over the United States and Europe? One of two things would happen, both of them good for the cause. Either Muslims would be publicly exposed as racist and secretive, or they would let non-Muslims into their conferences and Friday sermons. So either they would get bad press as racist, or non-Muslims would be monitoring what they say inside these normally-Muslim-only communication stations.

This seems like a legitimate and viable form of protest that could be taken without any violence. It would have to be done carefully so anyone trying it would be safe — like going with a group, making sure people knew where you were, keeping your cellphone on you, etc.

I think this idea has some merit. What do you think?

A Good Place To Put Money

I thought this was a good use of funds. If nothing else, it produced some publicity for a good film. And who knows, maybe one of the democrats actually watched the film.
DENVER. A statement of issues and positions provided by the Democratic National Convention includes not a single reference to "radical Islam," and its only references to "Islam" are to an imam scheduled to speak and to identify Afghanistan as where the U.S. should be battling al-Qaida, since "the vast majority of Muslims believe in a future of peace, tolerance."

However, an organization has been flooding DNC delegates and Denver with copies of the video "Obsession" because members believe the threat to the U.S. is being dismissed or minimized, and the results – like those of Sept. 11, 2001 – could be catastrophic.

"The reaction has been everything from people who are upset with us and call us Islamophobes to a gay, Jewish delegate who's seen 'Obsession' and told us the Democrats aren't taking radical Islamic fundamentalists seriously," said Karen England, a spokeswoman for the group promoting the Watch Obsession website. (source: EuropeNews)
Sharing DVDs is one of the best ways to create the political conditions most amenable to stopping all concessions to Islam.

Support The Free Speech Protection Act of 2008

When Congress returns next month, the Senate Judiciary Committee may take up the Free Speech Protection Act of 2008 (S. 2977), a bill that protects U.S. authors and publishers from the threat of libel tourism.

The Libel Tourist - Updated Edition explains:

YouTube link

Right NOW the bill is pending in Congress. We have only until the first week of September to get everybody to demand that Congress pass this bill. If we miss this opportunity, all American writers and publishers - except those living in New York State, where Rachel's Law already passed, continue to be silenced.

Write or call your Congresssional representatives to demand their support of the Free Speech Act 2008. Don't wait! The deadline for responding is close of business Friday, September 5.

The numbers of the bill are as follows: H.R. 5814 (House of Representatives) and S-2977 (Senate).
