Islam, the scourge of Iraq

At first glance Shawbo Ali Rauf appears to be slumbering on the grass, her pale brown curls framing her face, her summer skirt spread about her. But the awkward position of her limbs and the splattered blood reveal the true horror of the scene.

The 19-year-old Iraqi was, according to her father, murdered by her own in-laws, who took her to a picnic area in Dokan and shot her seven times. Her crime was to have an unknown number on her mobile phone. Her "honour killing" is just one in a grotesque series emerging from Iraq, where activists speak of a "genocide" against women in the name of religion.

In the latest such case, it was reported yesterday that a 17-year-old girl, Rand Abdel-Qader, was stabbed to death last month by her father for becoming infatuated with a British soldier serving in southern Iraq.

In Basra alone, police acknowledge that 15 women a month are murdered for breaching Islamic dress codes. Campaigners insist it is a conservative figure.

Violence against women is rampant, rising every day with the power of the militias. Beheadings, rapes, beatings, suicides through self-immolation, genital mutilation, trafficking and child abuse masquerading as marriage of girls as young as nine are all on the increase.

Du'a Khalil Aswad, 17, from Nineveh, was executed by stoning in front of mob of 2,000 men for falling in love with a boy outside her Yazidi tribe. Mobile phone images of her broken body transmitted on the internet led to sectarian violence, international outrage and calls for reform. Her father, Khalil Aswad, speaking one year after her death in April last year, has revealed that none of those responsible had been prosecuted and his family remained "outcasts" in their own tribe.

"My daughter did nothing wrong," he said. "She fell in love with a Muslim and there is nothing wrong with that. I couldn't protect her because I got threats from my brother, the whole tribe. They insisted they were gong to kill us all, not only Du'a, if she was not killed. She was mutilated, her body dumped like rubbish.

"I want those who committed this act to be punished but so far they have not, they are free. Honour killing is murder. This is a barbaric act."

Despite the outrage, recent calls by the Kurdish MP Narmin Osman to outlaw honour killings have been blocked by fundamentalists. "Honour killings are not actually a crime in the eyes of the government," said Houzan Mahmoud, who has had a fatwa on her head since raising a petition against the introduction of sharia law in Kurdistan. "If before there was one dictator persecuting people, now almost everyone is persecuting women.

"In the past five years it is has got [much] worse. It is difficult to described how terrible it is, how badly we have been pushed back to the dark ages. Women are being beheaded for taking their veil off. Self immolation is rising – women are left with no choice. There is no government body or institution to provide any sort of support. Sharia law is being used to underpin government rule, denying women their most basic human rights."

In August last year, the body of 11-year-old Sara Jaffar Nimat was found in Khanaqin, Kurdistan, after she had been stoned and burnt to death. Earlier this month, two brothers and a sister were kidnapped from their home near Kirkuk by gunmen in police uniforms. The brothers were beaten to death and the woman left in a critical condition after being informed that she must obey the rules of an "Islamic state". One week ago, a journalist, Begard Huseein, was murdered in her home in Arbil, northern Iraq. Her husband, Mohammed Mustafa, stabbed her because she was in love with another man, according to local reports.

The stoning death of Ms Aswad led to the establishment of an Internal Ministry unit in Kurdistan to combat violence against women. It reported that last year in Sulaymaniyah, a city of 1 million people, there were 407 reported offences, beheadings, beatings, deaths through "family problems", and threats of honour killings. Rape is not included as most women are too fearful to report it for fear of retribution. Nevertheless, police in Karbala recently revealed 25 reports of rape.

The new Iraqi constitution, according to Mrs Mahmoud, is a mass of confusing contradictions. While it states that men and women are equal under law it also decrees that sharia law – which considers one male witness worth two females – must be observed. The days when women could hold down key jobs or enjoy any freedom of movement are long gone. The fundamentalists have sent out too many chilling messages. In Mosul two years ago, eight women were beheaded in a terror campaign.

"It was really, really horrifying," said Mrs Mahmoud. "Honour killings and murder are widespread. Thousands [of people] ... have become victims of murder, violence and rape – all backed by laws, tribal customs and religious rules. We urge the international community, the government to condemn this barbaric practice, and help the women of Iraq.

Who killed Sayid Riyadh al-Nuri?

Hayder al-Jabiri, from Sadr's office in Najaf, told VOI, "Riyadh al-Nuri, one of the key assistants to Muqtada al-Sadr, was shot in front of his home in al-Furat neighborhood, northern Najaf, while returning from the Friday prayers.""Unidentified gunmen in a car with no license plate opened fire on Nuri, who received a bullet in the head," Jabiri said.

It appears to be an inside job.

Turns out, al-Nuri had written a letter. He gave one copy to Sadr and another copy to a member of his family. Afterwhich, he said the following:

"I have done what I could but I know they will kill me."

Many accuse elements in the Mehdi Army who wanted to silence the "moderate" Al-Noori because he wished to see Sadr's military wing disbanded. Today an extremely damaging letter, that was written and signed by Al-Noori himself and dated just over a week before he was killed, has been circulating on the internet in which he attacks the Mehdi Army has shed more light on this issue.

The letter, which is addressed to Moqtada, speaks of the "dangerous and uncomfortable" times the Sadr Movement is going through that can be exploited by "enemies". He advices Moqtada that "strong and quick" decisions need to made to "protect" the Sadr Movement.

Why We Love Dogs

I'm a dog lover. Been one all my life. Have a sheepdog, myself. So like most people, that puts me immediately on the opposite of those who practice the so-called religion of peace.

After seeing what this K-9 can do out of unbridled devotion to his master, why wouldn't Muslims embrace these wonderful animals - man's, and woman's - best friend.

Don't snap a photo of the Masjid At-Taqwa in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn unless you want to be hauled away by a group of angry Muslims in Islamic attire to the basement of the facility where a group of twenty "security guards" in karate suits will interrogate you.

This might sound preposterous.

But it happened on Saturday, April 24, at 3:00 in the afternoon.

Ali Kareem, the head of security for Siraj Wahaj's mosque, conducted the grilling. A small, muscular man with a wispy black beard that has been dyed red with henna, Kareem demanded to know the reason why a trio of kafirs had dared to photograph the building on a public street without securing his permission.


He further insisted on securing our identities and obtaining our motives for such a violation of Islamic space.

Being surrounded by a group of militant guards in a mosque basement from which there is no means of escape is not a comforting place to be for a Wall Street financier.

We tried to explain that we found the neighborhood with its halal meat vendors and food stores; Islamic dress shops, featuring the latest styles in burqas and hijabs; Muslim souvenir outlets, replete with bumper stickers stating "Don't Be Caught Dead Without Islam"; and Middle Eastern restaurants offering a variety of goat dishes to be rather quaint and interesting.

This explanation was not sufficient.


Kareem was impatient and did not want a detailed explanation of the reason for our excursion (simple sight-seeing) or a graphic account of the sights we had seen and photographed.


"I ask the questions here," he said, "and you provide the answers."

Realizing that we were in a bit of a pickle, my companion explained that we were interested in various religions and knew Siraj Wahaj, the imam of the mosque, was a prominent Muslim figure whom we would like to interview for a news outlet.

This didn't work too well since we could not produce a business card from a wacko blog, let alone credentials from a national publication.

At last, we blurted out that we were admirers of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) and wanted to obtain information about conversion. We were even knowledgeable enough to blurt out "Salaam" and "Allahu akbar."


The last utterance seemed to be the "Open Sesame" that got us out of the basement and back to Bedford Street, where we managed to take a picture of the mosque before hailing a cab and making a getaway.


The experience was disconcerting. Surely, anyone who takes a picture of St. Patrick's Cathedral or the Riverside Church is not hauled off to a basement for questioning by a threatening figure in a karate uniform and a band of Ninjas.


What is taking place within Masjid At-Taqwa?


And what about Siraj Wahaj, the celebrated imam of this mosque who claims to be a moderate?


Masjid At-Taqwa at 1226 Bedford Street was an abandoned clothing store, which Wahaj purchased at an auction in 1979 for $30,000 with cash from oil-rich Saudis. The interior is divided into spacious, windowless rooms that have been painted green and beige.


At Friday afternoon prayers the meeting room is crammed with hundreds of congregants. Some show up in do-rag stocking caps and Sean John sweatshirts; others wear finely embroidered, authentic-looking Muslim caps and flowing robes of crimson and gold. About half of the attendees are African-Americans. The others are immigrants from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. Worshipers range from Brooklyn street bums to the local celebrities, such as former heavy-weight champion Mike Tyson.


The place has played host to a number of notorious exponents of radical Islam, including Clement Rodney Hampton-El (Dr. Rashid), a key player in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Mr. Hampton-El is presently cooling his heels in a federal slammer since he was found guilty of seditious conspiracy. Mr. Hampton-El, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, fought as a mujahadeen under Gulbuddin Hekmatyar in the holy war against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.


Upon his return, Hampton-El was hailed as a hero by members of the mosque. Imam Wahaj has said that he was sought out by young and old alike for spiritual advice as an "elder" in the community. Wahaj, in fact, appeared as a character witness for Hampton El when the former mujahadeen stood trial before Judge Michael Mukasey in New York's Federal District Court on charges of seditious conspiracy and attempted bombing.


Hampton-El is currently serving thirty-five years in a supermax prison for America's most dangerous inmates.

Blind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman visited Masjid At-Taqwa on many occasions while serving as the imam of the nearby Masjid al-Fooqra at 554 Atlantic Avenue, several blocks from Masjid At-Taqwi. On the second floor of Rahman's mosque, al Qaeda had opened an office under the name of the al-Kifah Refugee Center. It became a favorite haunt for members of Wahaj's congregation.

Rahman also spoke on occasion at Masjid At-Taqwa. In one speech, the fiery sheikh suggested that Muslims should rob banks to benefit Islam.

In 1995, Sheikh Rahman was hauled into court as the alleged architect of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and for planning to blow up the United Nations, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the George Washington Bridge, and buildings throughout Manhattan. At his side was his good friend Siraj Wahaj who provided testimony of the sheik's sterling character.


In a Feb. 2, 1995, letter to defense lawyers in the landmarks-bombing case, then-U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White named about 170 people as "un-indicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators." Imam Wahaj was on the list.

Other infamous characters reportedly have made their way to the Bedford Street mosque, including Imam Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, whose son Adnan has been singled out by the Justice Department as "the next Muhammad Atta." Gulshair, it turns out, served a stint as imam at another radical Brooklyn mosque - - the now defunct Masjid Nur a-Islam, at 21 Church Street.

Another visitor, according to informed sources, was Sheikh Gilani, the founder of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, who served as the imam of yet another Brooklyn mosque - - the Yasin Masjid at 777 Saratoga Avenue. This infamous mosque is now a beauty salon. From 1980 to 1995, it served as a recruiting center for the jihad and for paramilitary Islamic compounds that remain in existence throughout the country.

Since the time of its inception, Jamaat ul-Fuqra has been responsible for more terror attacks on American soil (30 and counting) than all other terrorist groups combined. Members of ul-Fuqra, which maintains headquarters in Pakistan, have been convicted in US courts of such crimes as homicide, conspiracy to commit murder, firebombing, gun smuggling, grand theft, counterfeiting, and workers' compensation fraud. Others remain leading suspects in criminal cases throughout the country, including ten unsolved assassinations and seventeen fire-bombings. Some of the better-known adherents of ul-Fuqra are Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, and John Allen Muhammad, the Beltway sniper.

But what of Wahaj? Is he an exponent of radical Islam - - a man who poses a threat to millions of Americans?

He is a well-known and welcome figure in Washington DC. He was the first Muslim cleric to offer the invocation at the opening session of Congress. He has dined with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and serves on the boards of no less than five major Muslim organizations. He has received commendations from the Brooklyn police for eradicating crime from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area. In 2003, Siraj Wahaj Day was celebrated in Brooklyn in recognition of what one borough official called a "lifetime of outstanding and meaningful achievement."

But the proof of the real Wahaj is in the proverbial pudding.

In one of his sermons, Wahaj announced that the "real terrorists" are the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency. In another, he said, "In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing. And the only thing that will remain will be Islam." He proclaimed that a society governed by strict Islamic law, in which adulterers are stoned to death and apostates beheaded, would be vastly superior to American democracy.

To a Muslim audience in New Jersey, Wahaj advocated the idea of Muslims forming a coup to take control of the federal government. "If we are united and strong," he said, "we'd elect our own emir [leader] and give allegiance to him. Take my word for it, if six to eight million Muslims united in America, the country will come to us."

His so-called "moderate" interpretation of the Qu'ran became clear by this remark: "If Allah says 100 strikes, 100 strikes it is. If Allah says cut off their hand, you cut off their hand. If Allah says stone them to death, through the Prophet Muhammad, then you stone them to death, because it's the obedience of Allah and his messenger -- nothing personal."

Wahaj informed an audience of black women wearing Muslim head coverings in Orlando, Fla., that Islam condones a man's marrying up to four wives, and that this rule, when introduced in the seventh century, served as a restriction on arrangements involving even more wives per husband.

And there are the national organizations to which Wahaj remains affiliated. He served as emir (president) of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which has been charged with funneling millions to terror groups, and as an advisory board member of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has been labeled by author and counter-terrorism expert Steven Emerson as a "radical fundamentalist front group for Hamas."

All this may be well and good, save for the fact that Wahaj and his mosque retains a small army not of brown-shirts but black-belts who now claim the right to collar ordinary citizens on the sidewalk and to haul them off for interrogation.

You're only safe in Brooklyn at this writing if you say your prayers - - meaning, of course, the Basmalah.

Another Snob Speaks His Mind

Michael Hirsh over at Newspeak has a deep, bitter loathing for you know who:

Anatol Lieven, in his 2005 book "America Right or Wrong: An Anatomy of American Nationalism," describes how the "radical nationalism" that has so dominated the nation's discourse since 9/11 traces its origins to the demographic makeup and mores of the South and much of the West and Southern Midwest--in other words, what we know today as Red State America. This region was heavily settled by Scots-Irish immigrants--the same ethnic mix King James I sent to Northern Ireland to clear out the native Celtic Catholics. After succeeding at that, they then settled the American Frontier, suffering Indian raids and fighting for their lives every step of the way. And the Southern frontiersmen never got over their hatred of the East Coast elites and a belief in the morality and nobility of defying them. Their champion was the Indian-fighter Andrew Jackson. The outcome was that a substantial portion of the new nation developed, over many generations, a rather savage, unsophisticated set of mores. Traditionally, it has been balanced by a more diplomatic, communitarian Yankee sensibility from the Northeast and upper Midwest.

This rant speaks for itself. They (East Coast elites of the more diplomatic, communitarian Yankee sensibility) hate us, they really, really hate us ... Now we know What's Wrong With Kansas and anywhere else not run by Hirsh's communitarian elitists.

Pig Farming In Turkey And Banning Pork In Baltimore, Maryland

First, about Turkey, the Islamic nation yearning for admission to the EU.

For more than 40 years [Lazari Kozmaoglu, possibly the last pork butcher in Istanbul] has been selling pork to his own fast-shrinking Christian community, to defiant Muslims, and to foreigners. Now, he is being squeezed out of business.

Lazari's being prevented from slaughtering pigs and the stock of meat in his freezer is running critically low.

He owns an abattoir but the Agriculture Ministry has refused him a license to operate it, saying it does not meet strict new regulations.

Curiously, all the other slaughter-houses that once dealt with pork have been closed too.

"The government doesn't announce out-loud that it has banned the pig farms," Zafer [said].

"But at the end of the day, that's what's happened here. They're trying to send a message to their religious constituents," he said.

Back in Istanbul, the local agriculture ministry man denied the situation's anything to do with Islam.

He insists the regulations were introduced to bring Turkey up to European standards.

"We've got no problem with pork," Ahmet Kavak [said]...

Maybe the EU will swallow that taqiyya. I won't.

Newsweek - 'we have become an intolerant nation, and that's what gets you elected'

Michael Hirsch, web editor for Newsweek Magazine, manages iconically to encapsulate the bitter angst a generation of losses has formed in the heart of the eastern elite classes (I live in Maine) against the philosophical descendants of Andrew Jackson, the 'south'. He displays, one might say, an ignorance he wants to hold onto.

Essentially he argues that the south has won the war after the civil war, and the nation has lost. He argues that the coarse fighters of Andrew Jackson's time, racially naming Scots-Irish via King James I, as historical justification, became the (in their own eyes) morally superior working class hero fighters, and religious nut cowboy sheriffs ignoring the more cultured and egalitarian eastern and New Englandish know betters to our national detriment.

I have a less sweeping and far more factual interpretation, dude. The eastern elites of Virginia and the northeast, ignoring the needs of western farmers and others heralded a minor revolution as their populations increased, causing INEVITABLY the shift of political strength which resulted in the election Andrew Jackson, and his war on the bankers, among others.

Never the less of key import, and signatory relevance, is the line quoted in the post title. We know in black and white the attitude of Newsweek.

We haven't listened to those who know better, instead becoming intolerant. We are stiff necked and bring calumny on ourselves AND THE NATION as it is perceived, in disregard of our parents, who know what is correct.

Can you just imagine the blind, galactically arrogant, self involved, self satisfied monumental solipsis such an attitude requires? Can you imagine the superciliousness necessary, and the glaucoma required to put that in print?

Excuse me for disagreeing with the immutable words of all knowing daddy (ies), but it is one thing to argue that conservatism has lost by allowing itself to be identified with the likes of Pat Robertson and his ilk, but it quite another to say the Scots Irish, "the same ethnic mix King James I sent to Northern Ireland to clear out the native Celtic Catholics" have won for themselves political power in america now, and are an intolerant, over religious breed.

The coarsened sensibility that this now-dominant Southernism and frontierism has brought to our national dialogue is unmistakable. We must endure "lapel-pin politics" that elevates the shallowest sort of faux jingoism over who's got a better plan for Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 1835, a would-be assassin pulled a pistol on Andrew Jackson as he was walking through the Capitol. He pointed it at Jackson and pulled the trigger at point-blank range, but nothing happened. Jackson's aides were stunned -- it was the first assassination attempt on a US President in history. The man, Richard Lawrence, then pulled another pistol and attempted to shoot, but Andrew Jackson, ever the badass, pulled out his cane and beat him down. Today, Andrew Jackson remains the only President man enough to have beat up his own assassin.

A tolerant man would simply have DIED, I suppose.

This Is Permissible In An American School?

Seems that some people are concerned, despite the backpedaling and spin on the story.

Recently the United American Committee's Central Florida chapter exposed cultural Jihad in a Central Florida school. What would you do if your child was forced to attend a class on Islam without your consent in a Public School? This is the same public school system who says your child can not be exposed to prayer in schools. It is also the same public school system that your tax dollars fund to be able to give YOUR children a quality unbiased education. The public school system that says you can not force a child to participate in any religion. Well it happened this week in Central Florida. The Central Florida chapter of the United American Committee uncovered this plot to educate your children with the religion of Islam and exposed it.

The Central Florida Chapter of the United American Committee then contacted WFTV Channel 9 news in Orlando to expose a cultural Jihad at a local school. This class was called family dynamics and was supposed to have nothing to do with religion, but ISLAM turned it into a religious discussion and these students had no choice to stay or go. Perhaps the Democrats Should Take Power

Before you run to the comment section of this blog and fire off a message saying I’m a sandwich short of a full picnic, please read on first. Chalk this post up to frustration.

I believe that democrats should regain power for two reasons.

1. The Republicans are fighting this war ineffectively
2. The Democrats don’t want to fight it at all.

Let’s take number one first.

Many of you who frequent the starboard side of the blogosphere as it tracks the growing Islamic threat, know that the current Administration can not or will not identify the correct enemy and dances around the issue when they get close. If you can’t identify the enemy you can’t fight it properly. You can’t defeat it. You can’t win the war.

The enemy is an ideology that is advanced both by violent (terrorism) and non-violent (political, economic, demographic – Intimidation, Infiltration, Disinformation) means. Neither the politicians nor the military understand the full extent of this multi-part strategy or how to oppose it if it did. Here’s an example of the misunderstanding even if it is from the opposition’s side of the argument.

"Halal" products arrive in Spain "before this summer"

The arrival at Spanish market of the Islamic banking way has already been given an arrival day. Before this summer, all the people who would like to hire Halal-guaranteed financial products, that is, those who respect the Sharia law's legal obligations in these matters, would be able to.
