Some part of his implicit certitude concerning right and wrong, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, reality and fantasy, will turn to mush, the certitude progressively softened by the miasma of a subjectivist, value-negating artistic nihilism."

I say: This is a brilliant analysis of one of the subtle ways in which postmodernism does its work of destroying the ability of humans to analyze, and indeed to have any confidence in their own senses, or, in their own common sense.

Music which is a random series of notes conveys the message that any one note follows any other just as well. There need be no logic, no appeal to any reality, no respect for historical narrative, or the authority of our cultural/religious narrative.

However, I need to point out to you that classical music is far from dead. In fact, in my opinion, it is undergoing a Reformation.

You need to check out these composers;

Arvo Part
Olivier Messiaen
John Taverner

All three of them are working within the tradition of Western Civilization and the Bible. Messiaen also wrote one of his more famous compositions while in a German Concentration Camp. Its first performance was in the same camp, performed by fellow prisoners on whatever instruments they could cobble together. The piece is called "Quartet For The End Of Time."Pastoriushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169561459129778670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19209018.post-1149130879660814832006-06-01T04:01:00.000+01:002006-06-01T04:01:00.000+01:00Philistine that I supposedly am, I enjoy art and m...Philistine that I supposedly am, I enjoy art and music that has some coherence, that demonstrates talent and flair, that evokes emotion, that is harmonious and yes,that is pleasing to my eye or ear. Music that sounds like a recording of a factory stamping machine, discordant screeching or shouting, eliatory music, or the ugly for the sake of being ugly and thus supposedly revealing some deeper truth, or a piece that tells me the artist has neither technique nor talent is not worth much, in my opinion. In particular, paintings and drawings which look like the "artist" did not put in the time to master basic technique and went directly for an easier abstract style or the work of an "artist" who piles up odd bits of junk really turns me off. The way things are going I expect that when some future "artist" unveils "Steaming Pile of Dog Shit #3" it will be to rapturous reviews and learned discussions about the deeper meaning and significance of his splendid ground-breaking work.snowonpinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15473699257588152564noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19209018.post-1149116965985108652006-06-01T00:09:00.000+01:002006-06-01T00:09:00.000+01:00"The public, with the notable exception of an aest..."The public, with the notable exception of an aesthetically superior minority, is philistine, perhaps even artistically “reactionary”; it is confined to a reificatory, bourgeois aesthetic prison, and insists that art be -- Gads!
