Obama Saves Face - Forces Honduran Congress To Go Through The Motions Of Restating Their Position On Zelaya

From Yahoo News:

Honduras' ousted president, interim government sign pact

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Deposed President Manuel Zelaya and his opponents have agreed to a U.S.-brokered deal that he said will return him to power four months after a coup shook faith in Latin America's young democracies.

The power-sharing agreement reached late Thursday calls for Congress to decide whether to reinstate the leftist Zelaya. While the legislature backed his June 28 ouster, congressional leaders have since said they won't stand in the way of an agreement that ends Honduras' diplomatic isolation and legitimizes presidential elections planned for November.

"We are willing to be cooperative in Congress with the agreement of the negotiators," Porfirio Lobo, a National Party lawmaker who is favored to win the Nov. 29 presidential elections, said Friday. "The best decision for Honduras will be taken."

While officials did not explicitly say the deal would return Zelaya to power to serve out the remaining three months of his term, the ousted president was clearly confident that it will.

"This signifies my return to power in the coming days, and peace for Honduras," Zelaya told opposition Radio Globo.

Zelaya told The Associated Press that he expects Congress will take "a week or so" to make its decision. In the meantime, he said he will remain at the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, where he took refuge after slipping back into the country from his forced exile.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said Friday surrounded by jubilant supporters.

Soldiers still surrounded the embassy and floodlights still interrupted sleep but it has been several days since troops have crowed and meowed in the wee hours to keep those inside awake.

That's right, Zelaya. You're not going anywhere. The Honduran Congress will merely vote, once again, to oust you for violating the Honduran Constitution. The Honduran Constitution explicitly limits Presidents to one term, and states that the President shall, at no time, ever, call for himself to be re-elected.

Zelaya violated the Constitution, and the Congress and Supreme Court asked the Military to remove him from the country.

So, now to get the egg off his face, after months of calling this a coup, Obama is forcing the Honduran Congress to restate it's position.

They will vote and the outcome of the vote will be the exact same thing. Zelaya will not be allowed back into the country.

End of story.

  1. Hopefully the congress will tell Zelaya to to get lost. That arrogant joker is in no position to demand anything, much less have some grandiose illusion of being restored to power.

  2. my fear is you are wrong pastorius, that the external pressure on the congress and loss of iad will weaken thier resolve and they will allow this shitbird to regain the presidency a platform from which he can start to purge his enemies.

here's hoping he will be a nuetered president if it were the case and elections would force him from office.

I hope you are right and they will re-affirm his ouster becuase he broke the law.

It could be they are just putting on a brave face.

  4. I still remember the days when America used to officially support democracies and the rule of law. I'd tell democracy loving people and communism hating people--all hope's not lost, next year things will change! Just hang in there.

  5. Pastorius clock and dagger rhetoric, I love it.

@ Total, this is a forgone conclusion. Congress will simply re-validate the ouster, predicated on the Supreme Courts report.

Moreover, there is NO appeal to that vote. If Zelaya gets 10 votes out of 128 I would be surprised.

@Rumcrook, there was pressure, for many years, to try to buy off votes, via Chavez, which is why they got the ALBA treaty through last year....

However, now it is too little, too late, Zelaya is a loser, why do you think Chavez sent him to the Brazilian Embassy. (like good, old school Bolsheviks they now want him dead, see Trotsky, see Che, etc)

Don't worry,Pastorius is absolutely right, now Obama, Hillary, Restrepo, Shannon (whose nominaton to Brazil is being held up by Sen De Mint) can take credit for a fait accopli and Shannon can go enrich himself in Brasilia with Lula.

The elections were coming either way...btw, apparently Colin Powell has been named as the head of the verification team for the UN?

Micheletti knows EXACTLY what he is doing and Dr Ortez Colindres is in the background, LOL

Pastorius, i apologize for not posting, had a rough day...however, any questions, queries, concerns, etc, you guys can email me

My father will be in country for the elections on the 29th of Nov.

  6. Avenging Apostate,
    All hope is not lost.

I think Obama will be out of office withing the next 12 months. His own party will ask him to leave.

That's my opinion, and my opinion only. No one else is predicting that.

I predict this based upon my own theory of what happens when you put ideas into action. I have studied Philosophy and History, and I believe Ideas put into Action act like Billiard Balls. There is a Necessity to the Action.

If I am right, Obama will be gone soon. If I am not right, then either he will sit out the rest of his term in office as a lame duck, or the world is headed for absolute chaos.

    Most are predicting chaos.

I, of course, think I am right.

    :)
