From Atlas Shrugs:
The devout Muslim who attempted to take down the plane with a bomb had the device hooked up to his balls. It will be interesting to see the ever astute TSA tackle this new security problem.
A high-ranking law enforcement official told CBS News that the suspect apparently used a syringe to inject a chemical into powder located near his groin, a technique not seen in previous attempted attacks. It's possible, the source said, that this incident was a test of whether the materials could pass screening and how effective they might be at causing damage.
Another official identified the explosive substance used as PETN, which was carried in a soft plastic container - possibly a condom - though much of the packaging was destroyed in the fire.
According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, PETN is a highly explosive, colorless organic compound, and is related to nitroglycerin. (more here)

Terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab rigged underwear with explosives to bring down Flight 253A police car patrols the plane that was almost brought down Friday in a foiled terror attack.
A Nigerian Banker's son charged with trying to blow up a plane over Detroit claims he trained with Al Qaeda leaders who had explosives sewn into his underwear, it was reported Saturday.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab told investigators a radical imam he met over the Internet hooked him up with a terror boss in northern Yemen, ABC News said.
He says he trained with the Al Qaeda leader for a month while they planned the Christmas Day attack on Northwest Flight 253.
A Saudi bomb maker rigged up a six-inch packet of high explosives - known as PETN - and a syringe and sewed it into his underpants, the report said.
Possible evidence of Abdulmutallab's terror ties emerged as he was hit with criminal charges and air regulations were beefed up.
Meanwhile, disturbing questions swirled about how the suspect was able to get on the U.S.-bound plane with a one-way ticket, a bomb in his pants and a questionable background.
Abdulmutallab has been on a watch list by the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center for two years, an official said. There are 550,000 people with suspected ties to terrorism on the list.
Relatives in Nigeria said the suspect's father - a prominent banker - was stunned his son was allowed to fly to the U.S.
The father alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria months ago that his son had developed "extreme religious views" and had disappeared, the Nigerian newspaper This Day reported.
"I am really disturbed," said Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a former minister and chairman of First Bank in Nigeria. "I have been summoned by the Nigerian security and I am on my way to Abuja to answer the call."
Despite the red flags, his son was not on a Transportation Security Administration "no-fly" list - and got a two-year U.S. travel visa in 2008.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab Sent Text Messages from Yemen before the Terror Attack.
By Ellie Velinska
Review of the Nigerian Press Coverage of the Terror Attack on US Delta Airlines.
According to the local newspaper “Leadership Nigeria” Umar Mutallab, former chairman of First Bank and father of the alleged terrorist, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had alerted the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the INTERPOL and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) to his son’s weird behavior, especially after he sent a disturbing text message from Yemen. Umar Jr relocated to Yemen by late October this year, had sent a curious text to his parents – according to the report.
It was not Farouk’s first visit to Yemen. The first time he went there, he told his parents he was going for Arabic summer lessons. So when he went this time, the unsuspecting parents thought it was for studies again. To their dismay he sent the text. He told his bewildered parents to renounce him as their son. He told them he has found a new life in Yemen and would have no further contact with his Nigerian family. He asked them to forgive him of any wrongdoing and that he had ceased to be their child. He also said he was no longer coming home. He then admonished his parents never to contact him as he would never reach them again. It was the last contact his family had with him.
After this text message, Mutallab Sr. was advised to alert the security forces as it was not going to be easy to go to another country and get his son back. Then reportedly Mutallab met with the NIA. He also met CIA officials in Nigeria according to local press.
Nigerian newspaper Independent gives a short bio on the terror suspect.
He is believed to have studied engineering at the University College, London and had been noted for his extreme views on religion since his secondary school days at the British International School, Lome, Togo according to the Nigerian source.
At the secondary school, he was known for preaching about Islam to his mates and he was popularly called “Alfa”, a local coinage for Islamic scholar. After his secondary school, the suspect went to University College London to study engineering and later relocated to Egypt, and then Dubai. While in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again.
Newspaper cites family sources that Mutallab Sr is married to an Arab of Yemeni-descent (it is not clear if the woman is the suspect’s mother).
According to the Nigerian Independent Muttalab Sr is a regular visitor to the U.S. for medical check-up and holidays.
A statement on Saturday by the Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications says:
“We state very clearly that as a nation, we abhor all forms of terrorism. The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has directed Nigerian security agencies to commence full investigation of the incident. While steps are being taken to verify the identity of the alleged suspect and his motives, our security agencies will cooperate fully with the American authorities in the on-going investigations.”
Photo of Mutallab appear in the Nigerian newspaper The Gardian as the suspect is called the Man Who Shamed Nigeria
The paper notes that security is very lax at the airports in Nigeria – fact that is aiding drug trafficking through the country
The story changes a bit here, the suspect apparently was not quite the catatonic jihadi previously reported:
ReplyDeleteFlight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit was carrying 290 passengers and crew who heard what was described as a "balloon [possibly a condom?] being popped". "What we heard in the beginning was a bang... then a minute later there was a lady shouting things like, 'What are you doing? What are you doing?' " said passenger Elias Fawaz. "We looked back and there was a struggle – and we saw fumes and fire coming out."
Witnesses said Mutallab emerged from a toilet with a pillow over his stomach and a syringe in his hand. He injected the syringe into something held on his stomach, triggering smoke and flames.
"It was terrifying," said Richelle Keepman, another passenger. "We all thought we weren't going to land, we weren't going to make it. We were in the back of the plane and all of a sudden heard some screams and some flight attendants ran up and down the aisles. We saw the fear in their eyes and they grabbed the fire extinguishers."
Another passenger, Syed Jafri, said: "Everybody was rushing towards that area and tried to get water, a blanket and fire extinguisher." The suspected terrorist was said to have been yelling and swearing and "screaming about Afghanistan".
------Note:
'Syed Jafri' clearly recalls perceived umma grievance mantras yet doesn't mention whether or not the suspect made the ultimate battle cry 'alahuakbar'.

Wrong !

Alex.
There's something very odd about this story. It says he was said to be screaming about Afghanistan. But, in other accounts it says that after he lit his nuts on fire he was quiet.
ReplyDeleteSo, which is it?
He must have been very drugged to have displayed such odd behavior.
