Ok, listen, Black Betty was the wagon that used to take prisoners from the prison to the work site (chain gang) and back. A Black Maria. A Paddy Wagon. Windowless, all black and hot as hell inside.

Or it could have been a reference to The Pennsylvania Long Rifle.

Or a liquor bottle.

Me? I hold with the prison wagon story as originally told to Alan Lomax.

What ANY of that has to do with this particular video of the song I don't know.

Nor do I really care. . .

    Not that I'm aware of although that doesn't mean he and/or Damn Yankees didn't. I know of this version, versions by Ram Jam, Tom Jones (yep, THAT Tom Jones) and, of course, the original Leadbelly and the James carter & chain gang version from the Lomaxes.

    But it is a great great tune. Lends itself to so much improv.
