Ottowa Citizen:
Temblor strikes Taiwan on 'Boobquake' day
OTTAWA — Maybe the Iranian cleric had a point.
As women around the world bared their cleavage Monday in an event dubbed ‘Boobquake,’ a strong earthquake measuring 6.9 struck southeast of Taiwan.
That’s exactly what Iranian cleric Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi warned would happen, when he recently blamed earthquakes on immodest female clothing.
"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes," Sedighi, who apparently counts seismology among his hobbies, told Iranian media on April 16.
“Boobquake” is the brainchild of Jen McCreight, a 22-year-old Purdue University student, who called for the satirical protest in a blog posting.
Out of frustration, McCreight took to her blog to promote Boobquake as a way for "other female skeptics to join me and embrace the supposed supernatural power of their breasts."
"With the power of our scandalous bodies combined, we should surely produce an earthquake," she wrote on her blog (www.blaghag.com). "If not, I'm sure Sedighi can come up with a rational explanation for why the ground didn't rumble."
With the help of Facebook and Twitter, word of Boobquake travelled fast and, within 24 hours, had recruited tens of thousands of supporters.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Monday’s struck at a depth of 10 kilomeres, 314 km kilometres southeast of Taiwan and northeast of the Batan Islands in the Philippines.
McCreight, who calls herself as “a liberal, geeky, nerdy, scientific, perverted atheist feminist trapped in Indiana” on her blog, noted Monday’s quake but was waiting for more evidence to judge Sedighi’s theory proved.
“No, the Taiwan earthquake is not statistically significant - yet. If we get many of a similar magnitude in the next 24 hours, then we might start worshipping the power of immodesty,” she wrote.
There were no reports of injuries in Monday’s quake.

Hey! Ya don't suppose THEY had anything to do with it, do ya?
