We Bare Our Necks, Mayhap They will not Cut our Throats

Cross-Posted at The Blasphemous Blog

1. A little slumber, a little sleep, a little folding of the hands to rest, began the Preacher, a little forgetting, a little relenting, continueth the blogger.

2. A little lie, told here, to thine own self alone, and there, to another not far yonder. A lie that is sweet, and goeth into the marrow, completely.

3. Soon, thou wilt be insensible as Prince Charles if thou but relentest, just a little.

4. And ripe for slaughter.

  3. Marines are called "Leather Necks" due to the Barbary Pirates war in which the Muslims were beheading marines till the latter started wearing leather collars to try to protect themselves. Looks like it's time to go back to the shores of Tripoli.

    That's interesting.

  5. I picked up that information from Joshua E. London, Victory in Tripoli. (Hoboken, New Jersey: John wiley and Sons, 2005.) Sorry, I don't have a page number off-hand. No indications in the index or bibliography.

  6. Why am I not surprised that the term "Leathernecks" to refer to Marines stems from battles with Moslems? Indeed, I think that I've read something about that before. Somewhere.

A few years ago, one of my world history students commented at the end of the course, "I've learned one thing in this course: wherever Muslims go, trouble follows."

She didn't do very well overall in the course, but she did get THAT POINT at least.

The textbook we used referred to MTP as "a deluded dreamer with delusions of grandeur." Obviously, not a textbook used in the public school system.
