All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.

National Philharmonic Orchestra Saint-Saens Danse Macabre
It was apparently impossible for Saint-Saens to write anything that wasn't totally wonderful.
Just got back from the Salem "Haunted Happenings" Halloween Street Party which on account of Halloween being at the end of the weekend this year has been going on for nearly 3 days now. The way it works is this: starting just before sundown about 100,000 extra people start pouring into downtown Salem either a) in costume or b) not in costume but taking photos of everyone who is. The cops close the streets to traffic in about a 6-block area. Everyone wanders around taking pictures of each other and eating fried dough and visiting witchy historic sites and having Fun, and the local fundie preachers show up with mics and amps and spend all evening tell us we are all Lost and Will Burn In Hell. This is Traditional, and nobody cares.
I spent about an hour downtown and took some pictures I should have up tomorrow. On the way back to the car what do I spot but a Muslim family (hijabs on all females) of about 8-10 all ages sort of huddled in a group by the curb watching the weirdness go by, wide-eyed as a treeful of owls and making no attempt to join in the fun. Probably thought we were all jinns.
It did cross my mind what a tempting target something like that huge costumed street party would seem to make for an enterprising jihadists. But as the bozo who organized Friday's Yemeni Fire Drill and Package Search is also credited with the Christmas Undies Bomber and the Suppository Shaheed who almost blew up some Saudi prince, which makes him 0 for 3, nothing like sending shahids into a huge crowd at night with almost everyone in disguise anyway would probably never occur to this genius. Fortunately.
So we lit the Great Halloween Council Fire LAST night (the 30th) around 7:oo. (Did it last night so we didn't have to worry about keeping the kids up late on a school night). Had 10 or so neighbors around the fire, handing out candy, toasting marshmallows for the trick or treaters. Beer and wine and homemade Wasil (with rum) for the parents. (I think we had a few repeat customers) Lots of this type of music on the speakers. Great atmosphere. The Fire finally bunred down to coals and the last spook left the ring around 2:30 this morning.

Love it. Great choice.

ReplyDeletePlenty more trick or treaters tonight as well.
We never get an trick-or-treaters on our street anymore for the past decade at least. I think that they all go to the mall.
ReplyDeleteThere were more trick or treaters out last night than I have ever seen in my whole life.
ReplyDeleteThat made me happy.
