From Will at The Other News:
Mohammad Mehboob, president of the Virginia Muslim Association and a leader of the Dar Al Noor Islamic Community Center, was found dead in the Occaquan River a day after his family reported him as missing.
The Fairfax County Police Marine Patrol Unit and Dive Team located the body using their side scan sonar near the Route123 bridge overpass in the Occoquan River.
Police say this investigation is on going, and that the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of his death.
Mehboob was a respected leader in the community and was active in interfaith efforts. Many interfaith leaders expressed their shock at his death.
Somehow the lack of info makes you wonder.

from WLla comments:
"The death is being investigated by Fairfax County Police. Foul play is not suspected." That's B***Sh** by ABC7/WJLA! The police did not say that "foul play is not suspected," the police said that they are investigating the unattended death of Mr. Mehboob. The police only suggested that he was suicidal when he was first reported as missing on 28 June after 3:00am. Perhaps the police records found more of such 58 year old men who abandon their home as suicidal but this individual case was nothing like that. His family and the hundreds of people of the community say that he was a strong person, a humble man who was very helpful to everyone. Suicide is impermissible in Islam and he had no signs of depression. Here is much better reporting by patch.com: http://lakeridge.patch.com/articles/local-muslim-leader-s-body-found-in-occoquan-river
I am on the ground here in Northern Virginia.
ReplyDeleteThis story has gotten extremely short shrift here.
Offhand, I don't recall much about the Muslim Association of Virginia. Will do some research; if I find out anything of interest related to this post, I'll be back with the info.
The mosque might be Sufi.
ReplyDeleteMore information about Mohammed Meboob.
ReplyDeleteTHIS is interesting (dated July 14, 2011):
ReplyDelete...Mehboob declined to comment on the specifics of the questions regarding Sharia law, but said fears about Sharia are unfounded and misplaced. “We are all Americans and it is American law that we follow,” he said. “I follow Islamic tradition, but that’s for me. It’s not to be put on anyone else.”..
The Islamic Saudi Academy, alma mater to a wannabe Presidential assassin, is quite close to the Dar al Noor Center.
ReplyDeleteTurf war, maybe? Between Sunnis and Sufis, I mean.
AHA!
ReplyDeleteI may have found something to consider.
Hey, I'm a woman with a computer.
One more item of interest before I take a break, here is the statement from Mehboob upon the death of Osama Bin Laden:
Mohammed Mehboob, director of the Muslim Association of Virginia: “We are happy just like every American,”
Also see THIS and THIS. I haven't read all of the latter one, but that site often has useful information.
Wow.
ReplyDeleteThat would be sad and amazing if he were murdered for his anti-Bin Laden views.
If he REALLY thought sharia was not to be PUT ON anyone, then anyone involved in the ascendant form of Islam today would have to view him as apostate
