Passion
Wayne Esscoffery/Oleg Butman Trio
I heard this Sax player on the radio today. He's awesome. Will probably become one of my favorites.
Yes, exactly. I was in the car and heard him, well, part of this song, to the finish and they said it was Passion but I couldn't remember the artist until you brought it up now.
There are a bunch of you tube vids with Escoffrey but especially Oleg Butman (the drummer)(gotta do something about that name) and his pianist Natalia Smirnova. Her you need to check out as well.
I heard Escoffery on a tune called Estuary by Tom Harrell.
I've heard Tom Harrell before, and this song was ok, but nothing that I would have gone out of my way for, until I heard Escoffery's solo, which was, to me, stunning.
The things that struck me about his playing that I heard on the radio this morning were the tone (which sounds like a combination of Garbarek and Coltrane to me) and his way of piling modal changes on top of each other.
This tune is different, more angular, more traditional than the Tom Harrell piece I heard earlier. Still his playing is just intense.
So, it's him. It's not just his tone, it's not just the modes he was playing; this dude commands a tune. He makes it his.
WRTI plays all Jazz from 6 pm to 6 am. Lots of old and a good bit of new as well. But you're not going to get any Kenny G smooth Jazz Crap.
Classical during the day 6 am to 6 pm.
You can also listen to them online at WRTI.org. (for those of you out of Temple's broadcast range :) Choose either one you want (jazz or classical) for streaming.
The quartet is actually Butman's, Escoffrey is his saxophonist. The song was apparantly compsed by Butman and Smirnova (according to Amazon).
Anyway, it was the song itself that stuck with me, not just Escoffrey.
And while I like this enough that I'd probably buy it (funds permitting which thy ain't right now) it will never replace Miles or Trane etc.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm pretty (90%) sure that's the name of the tune. My version is a bit chopped up and I definitely like your version better.

Well, that is an amazing "coincidence", because I can not remember the last time I have heard a new Jazz artist I liked.
