A police officer has also told the BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg that someone has been shot outside Portcullis House.

Portcullis House is the official office building for members of the UK Parliament.

A man with a knife has been seen within the confines of the Palace, eyewitnesses said. 

 Parliament has been placed on lockdown with MPs locked inside. Metropolitan police have said they are aware of a large incident unfolding in Westminster. Reports suggest that 12 people have been injured.

UPDATE 2:00 p.m. EST via Fox News: Per Scotland Yard briefing 4 dead including a police officer. Twenty or more injured many critically. Single assailant who was shot is alive and under heavy guard.

UPDATE 2:20 p.m. -- Sky News reporting now that the four dead include the attacker.
