How about he bought the idea that if you make up your own laws out of your own head you have arrogated to yourself that which belongs to god and was given to you in a perfect document and, so sorry if you do not submit, you must all die.
Maybe he was radicalized by an extremist, or maybe he was just feeling very extreme, or possibly extremely radical, that day.
