Well, well, well! Does this surprise anyone?

According to the New York Post and Jihad Watch, Al-Qaeda claims to have infiltrated UAE government. Well, sure, ok, Al-Qaeda has infiltrated their government, but not to worry: Americans will still be in charge of port security.

February 25, 2006 -- WASHINGTON

Al Qaeda warned the government of the United Arab Emirates more than three years ago that it "infiltrated" key government agencies, according to a disturbing document released by the U.S. military. The warning was contained in a June 2002 message to UAE rulers, in which the terror network demanded the release of an unknown number of "mujahedeen detainees," who it said had been arrested during a government crackdown in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Little is known about the origins or authorship of the message: "You are well aware that we have infiltrated your security, censorship and monetary agencies, along with other agencies that should not be mentioned," the message said. "Therefore, we warn of the continuation of practicing . . . policies which do not serve your interest and will only cost you many problems that will place you in an embarrassing state before your citizens. Your homeland is exposed to us. There are many vital interests that will hurt you if we decided to harm them."

But all's well, I'm sure, because Bush says all's well, and to trust him. I suppose that means that all those al-Qaeda infiltrators into the Dubai government agencies are all gone now, so there will be no fear that any infiltration into our port system is possible.

And besides, there's going to be that reassuring 45-day review of the deal. . .

What's that, you say? The people reviewing it will be the ones on the same committee that approved the deal in the first place?

This is a posting where we could go around in circles forever it seems. But usually when AQ threatens a government, it is a hollow threat.

"You are well aware that we have infiltrated your security, censorship and monetary agencies, along with other agencies that should not be mentioned,"

What other "unmentionable" agencies? These are the words of a boasting liar, whoever said it.

If they had really infiltrated the UAE government, Why crow about it? Wouldn't they be better served by shutting up and let deals like the port takeover go through? I think this may be a threat to manipulate the UAE which is no friend to AQ.

Having said all this I would not lose any sleep if the deal fell through and I probably would lose sleep if the deal were closed, but finally, we can not "outsource" our security to anyone, we should stand equally vigilant if it is UAE or British company.

I guess the real point is: did the UAE release the "mujahedeen" in repsonse to this 3 year old threat? If not, What did AQ do in response? My guess is nothing because we would have heard about this.
Nothing, because they lied about being in a postion to do something. Now if the UAE released these prisoners I'll have to eat my words, but my guess is they did not.

About the recent attacks on the oil plant in Saudi...Here's an email I received a few days ago from an American friend in Saudi:

there is a big shoot out going on at the abq plant. the terrorists busted through the south back gate and got into the plant. they are not saying all that is happening on tv cause no one knows except the people who are down in abq and are seeing it. [My husband's] arab guys he works with have called him on and off all eveing since about 430 when it started,. they told [my husband] that there are helicopters and planes flying overhead and that 2 terrortist are in the plant. plus two car bombs that damaged a oil pipe.
the abq girl scouts were up here in xxx for the wkend and were planning on going back to abq this afternon and they are not allowed. they are staying at the girl scout house all night, and no one at abq camp is allowed to leave since the camp is on lock down. that includes parents of the girl scouts.

I'm absolutely confident in my source.

Anonymous,

My concern is that no one can be sure he is "clean" with respect to infiltration by terrorists. The fact that the alleged terrorists are "bragging" is not important, one way or the other; the reminder that infiltration is an on-going effort is important, however.

I saw a similar eyewitness account of the shootout in Saudi Arabia - which goes to my point, no one is safe, not even those countries with the most tightly controlled security measures.

My point is this: It behooves the United States to minimize the risk as much as we can. Whatever it takes to maximize our scrutiny of all points of entry into our country is the most intelligent thing to do.

In order to maximize our control, we must have sole access to all means of securing our borders and ports; no foreign country, even "friendlies" such as Great Britain, should have any control whatsoever over the ports. To allow this inserts just another risky layer of bureaucracy into the already overly bureaucratized system.

Thank you, Anonymous, for your interest in the matter.

Cubed,
Good post! This exposes what I most fear. AQ can work its wiles from within.
