Immediately following the Georgian attack on South Ossetia's capital overnight on Thursday, it seemed Moscow felt it was occupying the moral high ground, confident it could make a legal and humanitarian argument for its incursion into what is, strictly speaking, Georgian territory.
Both Prime Minister Putin and President Medvedev insisted that Russia had the legal right to move in to protect Russian peacekeepers who had come under fire and suffered casualties
Of course, the 'peacekeepers' were there because Russians had moved into South Ossetia (Georgia) ever since the USSR invaded and ended Georgia's independence in 1924. I suppose this means Russia is now squarely behind the most agressive of Israeli land policy ideas based on this reasoning, eh? Why do I doubt this? More, South Ossetia is no west bank, as Georgia never threatened and acted on a desire to annihilate the USSR.
More funny...imagine Mexican troops as peacekeepers in the OC protecting their people, and then sending in the Mexican Air Force when their 'peacekeepers' are harmed by the US Army, or more likely, the LA Police.
Worse still imagine southern CA, from LA south as a 'breakaway republic' as we strove to enforce our sovereignty, as Georgia did.
The Russian explanations are preposterous.
Mr Putin spoke of Russia's "historical role" to act as a "guarantor of security" in the Caucasus, which he said no-one should dispute.
And both he and Mr Medvedev repeatedly stressed that the Russian constitution required the government to protect the safety and dignity of Russian citizens, regardless of where they were situated.
Imagine what that could mean for a moment. The USSR (Stalin) has sometimes forcibly pushed Russian populations everywhere in all these republics that yearned for and achieved freedom from them when the evil empire fell.
Ridiculous fig leaf.
We all get it.
They lost the cold war and they can't stand it. They have money now and are prepared to act like Russians have since medieval history. I don't understand the why of that but I accept that THAT is their history. Maybe the Mongols. Who knows?
They are not going to allow free nations on their periphery to join NATO since that makes them feel threatened (NATO has invaded and used just so many dozens of nations as satrapies, after all, right?)
There are things we can do.
We can ensure now that our European missile defense WILL PROTECT europe from Russia. Since Russian foreign policy obviously functions from one level of blackmail to another, perhaps a missile umbrella which denies them this ability (to a great extent) will render them more cautious. It will certainly demonstrate that attempts to scare nations which wish to join NATO will have opposite effects.
If Georgia is still around in 6 months, we can sign a mirror agreement with them the way that Russia did with Iran, and deliver dozens of batteries of Patriots, Standard-3's , and THAAD defense systems, as well, and tens of thousands of anti tank weapons (remember all those Kornets that showed up in Hizballahland?)
We are now slowly retiring our Perry Class Frigates. They now are going to Bahrain, Poland and Turkey...add Georgia.
We can ensure that our military is sized properly and that our deterrent extends again to strategically agressive postures which compel Russian caution. This will also have a salutary effect on nation states which allow money to flow to jihadis.
We can begin development of weapons systems which demonstrate our resolve in this matter.
We can sail the 6th Fleet regularly into the Black Sea as well as the Eastern Med. Two aircraft carriers are not chopped liver. If not, then certainly we can send a division of DDG-51's along with their Harppons and Tomahawks
We can work to create an institution like the PSI whose actions have been very successful and highly supported by free nations to replace the ridiculous UN. Russia and China, not invited, so sorry.
We can be SERIOUS about energy resources.
The natural state of mankind is unfortunately NOT plowing fields. It is raiding fields others have plowed, and protecting those fields. And it means getting more fields.
We protect fields. Sometimes the raiders have to be reminded that means more than waiting for raids. Apparently this is one of those times.
