Libya, 1:30 PM EST: “The suggestion that Gadhafi may have fled was fueled when British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he had “some information” the dictator was heading for Venezuela.”
Egypt, from the liberals: Ayman Nour, head of the secular Ghad Party, recently declared the peace treaty “over”.
Bahrain, home of the US 5th Fleet:The island has a history of volatility because its Shia Muslim majority is ruled by a Sunni monarchy. Meanwhile the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, telephoned her Bahraini counterpart to express “deep concern” after riot police stormed a protest camp in central Manama, killing three people in what the opposition called a “massacre”.
Yemen: Yemen’s president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has rejected calls for his resignation as the protest movement demanding his departure continued to spread.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr Saleh said calls for him to leave were “unacceptable”, reiterating instead an invitation to the mainstream opposition parties to hold a national dialogue.
Iran: US must be removed from Islamic world: Khamenei, uttered while they have executed opposition leaders every day since Jan 1st, and Hizaballah operatives cooperate with Mexican Cartels for drug, arms and smuggling into the USA, and while the prospect of the Iranian navy sailing HOW CLOSE to Tel Aviv in a provocation?
And now consider this for history (NYRB):
In 1953, the year before the Brotherhood was outlawed by Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, a covert US propaganda program headed by the US Information Agency brought over three dozen Islamic scholars and civic leaders mostly from Muslim countries for what officially was an academic conference at Princeton University. The real reason behind the meeting was an effort to impress the visitors with America’s spiritual and moral strength, since it was thought that they could influence Muslims’ popular opinion better than their ossified rulers. The ultimate goal was to promote an anti-Communist agenda in these newly independent countries, many of which had Muslim majorities.
One of the leaders, according to Eisenhower’s appointment book, was “The Honorable Saeed Ramahdan, Delegate of the Muslim Brothers.”* The person in question (in more standard romanization, Said Ramadan) was the son-in-law of the Brotherhood’s founder and at the time widely described as the group’s “foreign minister.” (He was also the father of the controversial Swiss scholar of Islam Tariq Ramadan.)
IGNORANCE ON PARADE.
The Arab and muslims peoples WANT MORE SHARIAH. WANT MORE ISLAM. WANT HIS CODE EXPRESSED IN GOVT EVERY DAY. This FACT cannot be denied, and leaders they regard as being more secular (even if by 3%), and cooperate with Dar al Harb more than they would, are in trouble. We cannot do ANYTHING to stop this trend. FACT OF LIFE. But we can utter the truth to our own people.
THIS IS WHAT HUNTINGTON MAY LOOK LIKE.
It is in the hands of the Muslims what emerges, and the peace with Israel IS the test for them. What world do they want, the one where treaty obligations are honored, or the one where Hudabiyah like euchred opposition is the goal to the sure to come religiously required war?
We can speak optimistically ALL WE WANT, but like the folks in Wisconsin who, in a a progressive state voted in a republican house, senate, and governor because somewhere inside they KNEW …. you can BET there are plenty of people in Washington who KNOW.
Out here, the people KNOW.
Between revolt, oil, religion and the POTENTIAL for this all to coalesce in a reversal of 1924 there is the most danger since 1962, perhaps since 1938.
All we need to go over the edge is bad luck, and leadership that will NOT speak honestly to the people.
You know, sort of like writing a report of Nidal Hassan and the Ft Hood TERROR ATTACK - BASED IN RELIGIOUS COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS without ever mentioning radical Islam.
Muslim Brotherhood slogan in Egypt elections:
‘Islam is the solution’
“We are participating for Egypt’s sake,”
Brotherhood spokesman Issam Erian said
