All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.

Brad Mehldau Quartet feat. Peter Bernstein
jazz baltica Live (2006)

I like that guy's sound. I like Pat Metheney's music, but I have never liked his sound. And since he's such an enormous influence on so many guitarists, I don't like a lot of what I hear from Jazz Guitarists.
But this I like. He's ambient without being sweet, and without having it overwhelm the notes he plays.
John Abercrombie used to be good at this too, back in the late-70's early-80's.

Not the time period you mention but try this one
The Hudson Project with Abercrombie, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer and John Patitucci has been a favorite of mine for a long time now.
Oh yea, that's some good stuff.
