When "2+2=5" starts being used as a meme on Twitter, and leftwing NPCs are charged with believing this formulation from 1984, you might think that leftists would say, "We don't believe in any such nonsense, and shame on you for claiming that." 

That would be one way to play it. Leftists did not choose to play it that way. 

Instead, they decided to argue that 2+2 actually does sum to 5, for some people, if they feel like that's what it equals.
