2 Years in Dubai: Brutally Honest Review

 Read the comments:

I had a lady friend living there as a student. She was in a nightclub with her friends, a local guy comes and asks for her phone number. She says no, several times. This guy steals her purse and leaves. She realizes later and calls for security and eventually police involves. They found the guy, and he claims my friend stole his watch. Even though all witnesses explain the situation, he walked free and my friend stayed 2 weeks in custody. We worked so hard with our embassy and their lawyers to get her out. She got out eventually and just left the country. Dropped the education, her life and stuff there, everything. Left never to return. So I guess bumping into wrong shoulder seems very legit concern.

I lived in Dubai from 2010 to 2014, and the main reason why i left was because it was impossible to have real friends and real friendship, people come and go, revolving door! I moved to Malta, i have been living here for 10 years, best decision ever!

I live in Northern California. To me, a place like Dubai is like a manufactured dystopian nightmare out in the middle of the desert. We may not have the tallest buildings, but we have the tallest trees.

Ryan Cornelius is the longest arbitrarily held UK citizen in the world. He was a property developer in Dubai. He had charges fabricated against him and was sentenced to 10 years for fraud, despite the first trial aquiting him. His sentance was then extended for another 20 years. He has currently been in jail for 17 years, he is 71. He has not been released even though Dubai generally frees people in their 70s. SO the major reason to leave Dubai is that there is NO rule of law if you become politically inconvinient.

Exploitation is a big issue in Dubai, especially for lower-class workers. A lot of them are tricked into jobs that end up being basically modern slavery. My friend has a full-time nanny who gets paid almost nothing, while the family earns big salaries...
