Andrew Cuomo should be blamed if Zohran Mamdani is elected NYC mayor

Since we're on the subject, it's decidedly crucial to note one of the groups in New York that's backing Mamdani:
But if Mamdani wins, the blame should rest with Cuomo.That Cuomo's running in the first place is surely peculiar, given his shoddy record. Again, chances are he did so in order to make Mamdani look better by comparison. And it's entirely valid to say Cuomo will be responsible if, in the end, Mamdani stands elected as mayor.
To start, nothing does more to fuel the rise of somebody proposing radical change from the status quo than a sense that the status quo is broken. No doubt, Mamdani benefited greatly from the fact that Mayor Eric Adams was under federal indictment before being pardoned by President Trump, to whom Adams had cozied up. But he benefited doubly from the fact that when the dust settled, his main challenger ended up being Cuomo.
Cuomo was a failed governor. Not only did his disastrous Covid policies contribute to thousands of nursing home deaths, but then his administration tried to cover up the failure by manipulating the data. And he was forced to resign in disgrace over charges of sexual misconduct. It’s hard to imagine a better avatar for Mamdani’s argument that the existing system is corrupt and broken than Cuomo.
I’m generally reluctant to call anybody a “spoiler” given that elections are ultimately about earning votes. If you’re an older Republican voter who has lived in New York long enough, you probably grew up hating Andrew Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo (New Yorkers of a certain age will remember the late talk-radio host Bob Grant’s salute to “the sfaccim”). Andrew Cuomo in 2014 said that conservatives had no place in the state.

A leaner new normal for employment in the U.S. is emerging. Large employers are retrenching, making deep cuts to white-collar positions and leaving fewer opportunities for experienced and new workers who had counted on well-paying office work to support families and fund retirements. Nearly two million people in the U.S. have been without a job for 27 weeks or more, according to recent federal data.
Behind the wave of white-collar layoffs, in part, is the embrace by companies of artificial intelligence, which executives hope can handle more of the work that well-compensated white-collar workers have been doing. Investors have pushed the C-suite to work more efficiently with fewer employees. Factors driving slower hiring include political uncertainty and higher costs.
Altogether, these factors are remaking what office work looks like in the U.S., leaving the managers that remain with more workers to supervise and less time to meet with them, while saddling the employees fortunate enough to have jobs with heavier workloads.
The cascade of restructurings has created a precarious feeling for managers and staff alike. It is also tightening the options for those who are looking for employment. Around 20% of Americans surveyed by WSJ-NORC this year said they were very or extremely confident that they could find a good job if they wanted to, lower than in past years.
Meanwhile, opportunities for front-line, blue-collar or specialized workers are growing.

Why would anyone propose such a law? Why would the California State Legislature pass it? I asked the bill's author, San Francisco--based state senator Scott Wiener.
The answer he gave is the one that he supplies for so many of the bills he authors: it was necessary to advance the rights of LGBTQ people.
"If you are standing on the sidewalk with high heels, and you wear your hair a certain way, and you wear tight clothing, an officer can say, 'I think you're loitering with the intent to commit prostitution' and arrest you," Wiener said.
"That is not how we should be doing things in the United States of America--arresting people for how they look," he continued. "And when you do that, not surprisingly, it's only certain kinds of people who actually get arrested: it's trans women. It's black women. . . . It's an inherently profiling law," he said. "Randomly arresting a bunch of black trans women for how they look is not protecting potential victims of human trafficking."But were the police indeed "randomly arresting a bunch of black trans women"? The anti-trafficking advocates I spoke with dispute this. For starters, Wilson, Powell, and Russell (all of whom are African-American) say that biological women and girls--not transgender individuals--constitute the vast majority of those trafficked. Trump Citizenship Audit to Cut Section 8 Housing and Other Benefits to Illegals
While the government remains shut down because Democrats demand free healthcare for illegal immigrants, President Trump has ordered a sweeping audit of federal programs to ensure that other taxpayer-funded benefits are not being distributed to illegal aliens.
The order encompasses at least 28 major programs across multiple federal agencies. Housing audits include the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program and public housing.
The Department of Health and Human Services is reviewing 13 programs, including Head Start, Community Health Centers, Medicaid, and the Title X Family Planning Program, as well as a range of behavioral health and substance abuse grants.

Two men who allegedly stole $100 million worth of France’s crown jewels during a daring daytime heist at the Louvre Museum were arrested on Saturday night — as one suspect was captured trying to flee the country.Seine-Saint Denis has a huge Muslim enclave, and Algeria speaks for itself as a Muslim-dominated country. So, no shock at all the culprits could turn out to be followers of the Religion of Peace. We must hope the remaining stolen artifacts are recovered, and the robbers will be punished, though rapists deserve far more severe punishment than robbers do.
One of the suspects, who has not been identified, was busted as he was boarding a flight bound for Algeria at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris newspaper Le Parisien reported.
The men, from Seine-Saint-Denis, a suburb north of Paris, were detained by police as part of the investigation of “organized gang robbery” and “conspiracy to commit a crime.”
Police were tipped off on Saturday about one of the suspects likely to be flying out of the country heading to Algeria in North Africa.
The second suspect was arrested shortly afterward in Paris.

Far-left Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson erupted in response to a reporter’s use of the term “illegal alien,” equating it to the historical dehumanization of Black Americans during slavery.
The meltdown came when a reporter pressed Johnson on the enormous taxpayer burden of providing shelter, healthcare, and other services to tens of thousands of migrants who have flooded the city since 2022, resources that have strained Chicago’s budget while crime ravages neighborhoods and essential services for legal residents are slashed.
“We don’t have illegal aliens. I don’t know if that’s from some sort of sci-fi message that you wish to add,” Johnson erupted, dismissing the term as fictional.
When the reported calmly noted that “illegal alien” is, in fact, the precise legal terminology enshrined in federal law, Johnson doubled down with a jaw-dropping comparison.
“Well, listen, the legal term for my people were slaves. You want me to use that term, too? Look, let’s just get the language right. We’re talking about undocumented individuals that are human beings. The last thing that I’m going to do is accept the type of racist, nasty language to describe human beings,” he said.
