He didn't even INFER or IMPLY McCain was a mean negative campaigner, instead he directly blamed John McCain for the stupid stupid rumors that Obama is a muslim, and then accused McCain of trying to inculcate the idea that Obama had terrorist tendencies because of his relationship with William Ayers.

1) McCain has condemned the stupid rumors
2) McCain, if anything has been concerned that Ayer's political outcomes in terms of what kind f America we have are shared to some degree by Obama, and thus has looked for the truth of their relationship. Any American who is not concerned about that to some degree is a fool. Especially after his Marxist theological quote at "Joe"
I cannot imagine there are americans who think Obama has terrorist tendencies, or that after 20 years denying he heard Wright thunder our evils in that church, that he really is a Muslim.
And Powell? Let us all not forget that it was specifically Colin Powell who set the stage for the need to invade in 2003, when in 1991 he advised Bush 41 at THE MOMENT OF ABSOLUTE VICTORY to stop the army's advance, and leave Saddam in power. The moment of the utter destruction of the Iraqi, Kuwait invading force, was Powell's moment to urge we end the slaughter of the enemy. A fool who left Saddam in power.
