Kuwait Purchases 5.4 Million Doses of Emergency Nuclear Radiation Drug

Why do you think Kuwait would feel a need to do something like this?

Kuwait Ministry of Health stockpiles thyroid-blocking potassium iodide for nuclear radiation emergencies

MOORESVILLE, N.C., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ — Nukepills.com today announced the sale of 180,000 units (5.4 million doses) of ThyroShield™ Potassium Iodide to the Kuwait Ministry of Health. Worth approximately $1.4 million, the sale was brokered by Nukepills.com and signifies Kuwait's proactive course in protecting its citizens during a nuclear radiation emergency.

“This sale is the first large-scale order of ThyroShield from a foreign government. We are currently working on additional potassium iodide orders from other countries in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. We hope the new U.S. administration follows Kuwait's lead and reinstitutes the potassium iodide distribution plan to protect its citizens,” said Troy Jones, President of Nukepills.com.

Yeah, that might be a good idea, huh?

According to the CIA factbook, Kuwait has a population of 2,596,799
note: includes 1,291,354 non-nationals (July 2008 est.)

Who else are they going to provide the remaining supply to?

Gaza (?) has 1,500,202 (July 2008 est.)

That leaves 1.4 doses for what . . .Southern Lebanon?

Even if the Kuwaitis gave potassium iodide to the South Lebanese and Gazans, it would not save them from a strategic or tactical nuclear attack. Potassium iodide is effective in saving people from radiation poisining in the event of a dirty bomb or Chernobyl-style nuclear meltdown, but will do little in the event of a nuclear attack. From the sound of this story, it seems that Kuwait is looking to develop its own atomic energy program (perhaps to counter Iran?).

The biological damage done by nuclear radiation is permanent. Those pills won't do jack. The only effective shield is a really, really thick lead wall. Even that is no protection when you're in the blast zone. The heat is so intense in the blast zone that everything vaporizes.

We see the honor part of the honor-shame culture of the Arabs and Iranians playing out in their incessant tough-guy posturing and trash talking. No one is willing to back down because that will bring shame. We'll find out very soon the end result, nuclear Armageddon, of their pathological unwillingness to swallow their pride.

Total,
You believe the Kuwaitis are ordering potassium iodide in case THEY screw up while developing nuclear weapons.

Is that right?

It seems to me it is more likely they are ordering it in case of a nuclear war in neighboring countries.

They are on the other side of Iraq from Israel.

It would seem to me there are four countries who are in direct danger from a ME nuke war;

Israel, Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

There has to be some logic here, but I don't see it.

But then, I'm a techtard, and don't know the science of fallout and wind currents.

I never suggested Kuwait was trying to develop nuclear weapons, that would be unfeasible for such a small country with very little know-how in the atomic field. What I meant to say is that they are likely trying to develop an atomic energy program, which many Arab governments are interested in these days to counter any Iranian prestige in the region (such as Egypt, UAE, and Saudi Arabia). Why they would want the pills is a mystery to me and the scenario you suggest has the most logic to it. In the event of a nuclear war, Kuwait would have to have extremely minor levels of nuclear fallout for those pills to be effective on any level. In a realistic nuclear war scenario, however, the pills are unlikely to help much.

Total,
If say Iran and Israel attacked each other, or Pakistan and India, how would Kuwait be impacted? Do you know?

I do not know how Kuwait would suffer for certain but I can speculate. If a nuclear conflict broke out between Iran and Israel, I believe Kuwait would probably suffer heavy nuclear fallout given its proximity to the Iranian border. In the case of Pakistan and India, Kuwait would probably suffer minor fallout as would all the other countries in the region. At the same time, this scenario would depend on how many nuclear weapons are used and what their respective yields are. Iran probably will not have the ability to produce high-yield warheads for some time while Israel already can and probably does produce/possess massive high-yield warheads. If Israel fires off 100 high-yield nuclear warheads at Iran in a theoretical retalitory strike, the whole region will be practically screwed from the radioactive fallout from the blasts.

I have no idea what Israel would do, but all they would have to do to end the Iranian regime is destroy a few key cities.

That would not take more than a few medium-sized bombs, as I understand it. Maybe four. Maybe six. But possibly even two.

And, the larger point is, in that case, the potassium iodide would be a useful.

Anonymous,

Thanks, that's pretty cool.

Pastorius,

Since Israel is a very small country that can be destroyed by very few weapons of mass destruction, I would expect a highly disproportionate response. As for the potassium iodide, you're right, having the pill is better than having nothing if you're caught in the crossfire.

Total,
YOu could be right. that might be Israel's response.
