Olmert Rejects UN Call For Ceasefire

The United States took the pussy way out and abstained from the UN vote.

The President of the United States, apparently, couldn't make up his mind which way to go on the issue. What an idiot.

From Jihad Watch:

UN Security Council calls for immediate Gaza ceasefire; US abstains

The US abstained. Not, "The U.S. stood up and stoutly defended the right and necessity for Israel to defend itself against jihad attacks from Hamas." Oh, no. Instead, the U.S. abstained, and Rice spoke out in favor of the ceasefire resolution. Did anyone speak of how anything short of destroying Hamas would only restore the status quo ante, and lead to the resumption of jihad attacks upon Israel from Gaza? I doubt Rice did. I doubt anyone did.

"U.N. Security Council Passes Resolution Calling for Immediate Cease-Fire in Gaza," from FoxNews, January 8 (thanks to Weasel Zippers):

UNITED NATIONS — Three days of intense negotiations over the wording of a Gaza cease-fire resolution culminated Thursday night in the U.N. Security Councilpassing the measure, calling for an immediate, durable truce between Israel and Hamas.

The resolution passed by a 14-0 vote, with the United States abstaining. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the U.S. agrees with the principles of the cease-fire resolution but wants to see the outcome of an Egyptian effort to bring the Israelis and Palestinians to the negotiating table.

The cease-fire resolution spearheaded by Egypt and France must be "not just applauded, but supported," Rice said.

Despite the breakthrough in the United Nations, the two-week-old war in the Gaza Strip raged on, and early Friday, an Israeli airstrike flattened a five-story building in northern Gaza, one of more than 30 targets struck before dawn by Israeli warplanes.

Hamas security officials said the strike killed at least seven people, including an infant....

Sure. But they didn't mention the likely fact that they planted the infant there.

Israel Rejects United Nations Resolution To Stop The Fighting
Prime Minister Olmert has issued the following statement:

PM Olmert's reaction to diplomatic developments & UNSC Resolution 1860
(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

Following is Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's reaction to diplomatic developments and UN Security Council Resolution #1860"The State of Israel has never agreed that any outside body would determine its right to defend the security of its citizens.  The IDF will continue operations in order to defend Israeli citizens and will carry out the missions with which it has been assigned in the operation.  This morning's rocket fire against residents of the south only proves that the UN Security Council Resolution #1860 is not practical and will not be honored in actual fact by the Palestinian murder organizations."

One Jerusalem comment: It should be noted that the United Nations resolution does not mention that Hamas has terrorized Israeli civilians with thousands of rockets nor does it mention the kidnapping of Gilad Shalid.

Pastorius,

Why does this not surprise me?

Interesting that Bush appears to have used the Obama voting method.

What do you mean?

He essentially voted "Present", just like Obama does.

Right, Bush changes course, which surprises me a little, and Olmert -- after all this time holding off, says no way we fight on.

I think I need a drink.

Pastorius,

Yeah you're right, he did.

Bush has held a steady course...it runs in the family. Expect B.Hussein.O' to fallow the same "Roadmap".

After addressing the media, President George Bush talks with his hosts during his visit to the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C. Sept. 17, 2001. "And it is my honor to be meeting with leaders who feel just the same way I do. They're outraged, they're sad," said the President during his remarks. "They love America just as much as I do.". "If liberty can blossom in the rocky soil of the West Bank and Gaza, it will inspire millions of men and women around the globe who are equally weary of poverty and oppression, equally entitled to the benefits of democratic government. I have a hope for the people of Muslim countries. Your commitments to morality, and learning, and tolerance led to great historical achievements. And those values are alive in the Islamic world today. You have a rich culture, and you share the aspirations of men and women in every culture. Prosperity and freedom and dignity are not just American hopes, or Western hopes. They are universal, human hopes. And even in the violence and turmoil of the Middle East, America believes those hopes have the power to transform lives and nations."

"According to Muslim teachings, God first revealed His word in the Holy Qur'an to the prophet, Muhammad, during the month of Ramadan. That word has guided billions of believers across the centuries, and those believers built a culture of learning and literature and science. All the world continues to benefit from this faith and its achievements."

Michael -- I assume it was a typo but you're right as typed. Fallow the same roadmap. Not follow. Fallow = not in use, inactive. Unseeded.

The perfect word for the farce of a roadmap.
