Pub Prep

Ah, the Infidel Life. Good tunes. Good booze. The Jihadis don't know what they're missin'.

Here's a playlist to get you through till drinkin' time.

May the sidewalks of your pub crawl be smooth beneath you.

The Band (the best version of my absolute favorite song, bar none)

Joni Mitchell (in my Top 5)

The Allman Brothers (need you ask which?)

Old Crow Medicine Show (the good stuff here, no snake oil)

Cadillac Sky (going after that high lonesome)

Cheers, Infidels!

Thanks. Who are the backup singers with The Band? They're great.

Y'know that Joni song reminds me.. I have a reel to reel tape of a concert by James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, singing the Circle Game (among others), ...back ground, recorded live by Jonathan Schwartz (Dr.) from WNEW FM New York in 1969 or 70, VERY HIGH QUALITY.

You have just inspired me, MR to get that out, digitize it and post that sucker.

The next sweetest duo I ever heard was Carly Simon and her son (and Taylor's) singing together on Film Noir's - Every Time We Say Goodbye.

Both the Band and Joni Mitchell are from The Band's Last Waltz concert, a favorite movie of mine. Singing with them on the weight are Gladys Knight and The Staples, a blues/Gospel group great on their own. Also doing songs on the movie with the Band are folks like Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfiueld. If you've never seen it, you need to.

But The Weight is one of those songs they need to play when my time's up.

Epa -- you post it I'll watch it. Love Joni Mitchell's music. Hejira, Mingus and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter my favorites.

Pasto -- apologies, couldn't find a version of her doing it with your namesake doing the original bass. I got a bunch of Gov't Mule cd's. Better before Woody died but still great with Warren carrying on.

Epa,
Can't wait to hear that recording. I'd also like to hear Carly with her son.

While we're discussing Joni teaming with people outside her immediate band, have any of you ever heard David Crosby's album If I Could Only Remember My Name?

That album is a goldmine as far as I'm concerned. The band is made up of the usual CSNY backup people, plus Jorma from Jefferson Airplane, and Billy, Jerry, and Phil Lesh from the dead. Additionally, Joni Mitchell fills in for Stills in the CSNY four-part harmony.

To my mind, the Crosby Mitchell, Nash and Young four-part is even better than anything CSNY ever did themselves.

That's not to say the album is better. David Crosby's style is a meandering jazz that suits me personally. Many may not be as enamored of it as I. That being said, the album is worth hearing for the harmonies alone.

Here's my favorite track (featuring Mitchell along with Young and Nash on background vocals):

And another. this one has an almost Gregorian Chant quality:
