The next time somebody tries to smear conservatism by citing James Von Brunn's attack on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, below is a strategy to use in the discussion: (from this essay by Andrew Breitbart):

[1] "Why was it outrageous 'guilt by association' to connect Barack Obama to a domestic terrorist like Bill Ayers and an anti-Semite like [the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.], but it's perfectly mainstream to associate all conservatives with this nut job?" asked Jonah Goldberg, best-selling author of "Liberal Fascism" and a nationally syndicated columnist.Mr. Breitbart concludes his essay with the following paragraph:
[2] Or what about the countless terrorist attacks by unaffiliated Muslim groups or individual jihadists that the media explains away as isolated incidents? Somehow the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its media defenders win the day with their collective cry: "Don't rush to judgment!"
Right now, the Democratic-Media Complex is using the single act of a lone lunatic far removed from the political mainstream to split this country on racial grounds in the pursuit of its own political advantage. With the listless Republican Party lacking in any vocal leadership, it will probably succeed.Don't let the tactics of leftist hypocrisy succeed! Answer back!

UPDATE: Damien left these links for us (thanks Damien):
"James von Brunn a Radical Atheist who Hated Christians and William F. Buckley, Just like Daily Kos!,"
"James von Brunn was an Admitted Socialist with Connections to Noam Chomsky"

Always On Watch,
Yes I do agree, liberals have a lot of explaining to do, if they insist on using this guy as a means to tar conservatives.
My buddy, Rob Taylor has also been debunking the claim that Von Brunn was a radical right winger in the first place.
According to him, "James von Brunn a Radical Atheist who Hated Christians and William F. Buckley, Just like Daily Kos!," posted on June 11th.
Also he wrote another article on the same day, further debunking the claim that Von Brunn was a conservative. Also according to Taylor, "James von Brunn was an Admitted Socialist with Connections to Noam Chomsky"
Hope they're of use to you. You could also show this to the people at Astute Bloggers. Well, what do you think?
FWIW: Von Brunn's son has come out publicly against him, saying the shooting was unforgivable and he wished his father had died instead.

UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST (from Pastorius)
You're welcome, Pastorius!
Nuts are nuts regardless of their politics. And frankly, I am far more worried about the nuts running the media and the government than I am about folks having fireworks and tea parties on the Fourth of July. Somehow I just don't see an armed conflict coming up over hot dogs and potato salad. A civil conflict yes. A political conflict, yes. But violence has always been the tool of the Left. Think back to Weatherman Underground and their ilk. Oops, did that bring a flashback to some of the Obama Administration? I told them LSD could do that.
Ellen,
I wonder when it was, the last time the Right has had a major organized insurrection like the Left.
Ellen K,
I largely agree with you. We should not use James Von Brunn to smear liberals. That's as unfair and illogical as liberals trying to use him to smear conservatives. Also, lets not use him to smear atheists. There are some very good, brave people who happen to be atheists. I can think of a few off hand. But if some liberals are going to try to use him to smear conservatives, and others that don't agree with them, than we can and should point out any commonality between their thinking and the way Von Brunn thought. Because, lets face it, he doesn't fit the leftwing's stereotype of a right wing monger. He maybe a hate monger, but he's no conservative.
Pastorius and/or MR, could one of you guys email me? I've just discovered some very intriquing and disturbing (even more so than usual) info about Barney Frank and a connection to someone I used to know...
