Avatar Review - first of all, it's not quite a movie

It is a physical experience.
It is a fantasy documentary
It is a love story
It is the story of the Cherokee, Sioux and Cheyenne on a world where nature veneration makes a bit more difference.

Make sure you see it in 3d
Make sure it's on a real big screen, preferably IMAX, but it will be fine on a regular screen with a 1st rate sound system.

Sam Worthington is outstanding. Zoe Saldana as Natiri is literally otherworldly. All I can say to her is, I SEE YOU (anyway). Stephen Lang ... comes straight from the OK Corral via Stonewall Jackson and is perfectly cast. You dislike him intensely but you get him completely. Signourney Weaver plays what she looks like she ought to be: Ripley with a PhD. Giovanni Ribisi plays the corporate guy you love to hate with a little more conscience than Paul Reiser in Aliens

Anyone who likes a love story, which is as always, boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, and then the last part which we all know .. will enjoy the tension blue heat generates.

Anyone who likes action will will enjoy themselves IMMENSELY

Anyone who likes effects will be a lost soul to Ewya, and stay in Pandora for the rest of the day

Anyone who watched Star Trek will remember well the Federation's Prime Directive, and enjoy

Any progressive will enjoy the movie because huminz be evil, HARRRRRRGGGHHHH !

Any conservative will enjoy it because you will remember what Cameron created from his mind, and caused to come into reality. Not only a totally new genre of movie experience, and way of making a story, but also an entire SET of invented technologies to take his singular personal imagination and make out of it, HUGE GREEN for himself and the backers.

SUPERB 3 hours. You will forget to eat the twizzlers, drink the coke, and say something to your wife. I heard NO COMMENTS for three hours. You won't be there for three hours, you will be on Pandora.

We saw it yesterday at noon. It was sold out until monday at 3, at noon friday.

CONGRATULATIONS to Cameron and all who helped create something to feel and think about, not as lesson in morality or love, but as a lesson in what man can do with what starts in a single creative mind and ends with millions receiving the creation.

Forget Titanic. This is IT

Please explain.

Duh. Took me nearly an hour to remember that Reading = Jordan's IMAX.

OK, compared to say, the number of inane "robber baron" type remarks by execrable Billy Zane in Titanic, how likely is the wince factor to intrude on my enjoyment of this thing? Because the reviews over on Breitbart make it sound like one long Al Gore/Ward Churchil rant.

But the previews are just soooo gorgeous... and I'm such a sucker for new movie technology.

So will I need a motion sickness pill or not?

motion sickness pill = a baloney hype.

the most formulaic part of the movie is the big bad corp whose greedy profit motive causes huminz to be bad and ravage Pandora.

But that is overwhelmed by everything else in the movie.

It's not about the political message ..there's no more of that than in Abyss, all is an excuse for the imagination to have a story.

What was so great about this film I could not understand. Is cinema all about graphic/visual while the rest of the component(narrative), acting can be third-rate

Epaminondas said...

Jean I am telling you that impression is INCORRECT. My review is intended to convey that the relationship between Sully and Natiri forms the center of the story.

Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, Broken Arrow (James Stewart), are all strong stories.

As far as acting...

The technical breakthru achieved by Cameron allows us to see every minute facial expression of the ACTUAL ACTORS, EVERY MUSCLE TWITCH every action they take ACTING not as if it were really them .. IT IS really them. It is VERY evident on close ups of their Navi faces and especially the eyes. It's NOT CGI/animation where the acting is concerned. Put that out of your head

Hey, Revere, if you're coming to Reading anyway. . .

(also be advised we were just rated the 37th most dangerous city in the country. and the IMAX is decidedly NOT in the good part of town)(and folks want to know why I have a License to Carry)

I'm talking Reading, Massachusetts. I think they're a town not a city and the IMAX is right next to an 8-lane highway. Where you at?

Pastorius said...

MR,
The city you live in is the 37th most dangerous city in the country?

Jeez. That sucks.

Revere -- oh wow. Didn't know that. I'm in Reading, Pa. Thought you had reason to visit down here.

Pasto -- yeah, it's a hoot. Fucking drug wars innocents get caught up in them.

Late to respond to this because I didn't see it until comparing with Cutlurist John's Avatar review today.
