Jimmy Carter Says Muslims Catholics and Southern Baptists Believe God Made Women Inferior, Blames Them For Female Genital Mutilation, Physical Abuse, Rape....

JimmyCarter

The headline sounds like it must be an exaggeration, right?

Nope.

I am revising my opinion on Jimmy Carter. I used to think he was an insane Leftist. Now, I believe he is an Andy Kaurmanesque Performance Artist.

From Weasel Zippers:

In an address to a gathering sponsored by the World Parliament of Religions (PWR) last Friday, former US President Jimmy Carter has once again blamed traditional religion, particularly Southern Baptists and Roman Catholics, for “creating an environment where violations against women are justified.”

Although in a July column in The Observer Carter admits to "not having training in religion or theology," in his address to the PWR Carter appeals to his authority as someone who has "taught Bible lessons for more than 65 years."

In opposition to the vast majority of authentic scholars and historians, Carter asserted: “It’s clear that during the early Christian era women served as deacons, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers and prophets.” He added: “It wasn’t until the 4th century or the 3rd at the earliest that dominant Christian leaders, all men, twisted and distorted Holy Scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant position within the religious hierarchy.”

Contrary to the theorizing of Carter, Pope John Paul II taught, “The Lord Jesus chose men to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.” He added: “the Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church; 1577)

Carter singled out the Southern Baptist Convention and Roman Catholic Church, claiming that they “view that the Almighty considers women to be inferior to men.” However, both Christian faiths hold to the Scriptural truth that God created men and women equal.

“Their continuing choice provides a foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world,” said Carter. Carter goes on to list horrific violations against women such as rape, genital mutilation, abortion of female embryos and spousal battery.

I can't believe that Jimmah believes in the God of the Bible.
He believes in something else and has no fear of the true God.

As King David said in Psalm 36....The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his inequity be found to be hateful........

This man's conscience has been bought and paid for.

RRA said: where does Jimmuh get off attributing FGM, which I never even heard of outside the Arab/African/Islamic context to the influence of Christianity?

I say: That's really the point of this post. FGM does not even exist in any Christian nation or context anywhere in the world.

Additionally, Christianity does not sanction rape, whereas Islam does (in the case of war booty - although a Muslim would tell you that woman gotten in war is property, not booty).

RRA said: he is right up to a point about Christianity viewing women as inferior

I say: Yes, this is true.

Proverbs Chapter 31:10-31

10. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
11. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
12. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
13. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
14. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
15. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
16. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
18. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
19. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
21. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
26. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29. “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
30. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

One wonders when Carter Will speak out against the abuse Islam has justified against women. There maybe some things in the Bible that are sexist, but there's even more sexism in the Koran. I do remember this one video by an atheist who pointed out a passage in the old testament that sounded like it condoned rape, but I don't think that many Christians or Jews take take passages like that to heart today, unlike unfortunately a large number of modern Muslims. I also don't know of any mainstream Christian, or Jew, who practices or supports FGM. As for the abortion of female embryos, does this mean that Carter pro life now? How can one condemn abortion for gender selection, if the mother has an absolute choice of what she wants to do with her body regardless of the life growing inside her? Or is he talking about women being forced to have abortions because their husbands don't want girls? Either way, to blame Christianity for it, makes no sense. Both the Catholic Church, evangelicals and biblical literalists overwhelming oppose abortion. Also I have yet to hear Pat Robertson or any other main stream conservative Christian leader condone wife beating. If one of them had recently done so, it would be all over the news, and no one would be more shocked than other Christians.

That is such a a lovely quote from Proverbs! I particularly like the part about how this lady is a designer who "selects wool and flax and works with eager hands" to make "linen garments" and sell them. Sounds like me in back in the '70s!

It is a great passage, isn't it?

And what is really cool for me is my wife has actually developed into this kind of woman over the years.

She was always great, but she only gets better as the years go by.
