U.S. imams arrested for alleged Pakistani Taliban links

From Will at The Other News:
Miami (CNN) -- Two South Florida imams and a third family member were arrested Saturday on charges of providing support to the Pakistani Taliban, the Justice Department said.In addition, three others in Pakistan were also indicted on the same charges.FBI agents arrested Hafiz Khan and his son Izhar Khan in South Florida, the department said.

They are expected to make their initial court appearance in federal court on Monday.Another of Hafiz Khan's sons, Irfan Khan, was arrested in Los Angeles and will appear in court there. Also charged are three Pakistani residents: Ali Rehman, Alam Zeb, and Amina Khan. Amina Khan is Hafiz Khan's daughter, and Zeb is his grandson.

The four-count indictment alleges that all six defendants conspired to provide material support to a conspiracy to kill, injure and kidnap people abroad, and that they provided support to the Pakistani Taliban.Hafiz Khan is the imam at Flagler Mosque in Miami. Izhar Khan, is an imam at the Jamaat Al-Mu'mineen Mosque in Margate, Florida.

"Despite being an imam, or spiritual leader, Hafiz Khan was by no means a man of peace. Instead, as today's charges show, he acted with others to support terrorists to further acts of murder, kidnapping and maiming," U.S. Attorney Wilfredo A. Ferrer said. "But for law enforcement intervention, these defendants would have continued to transfer funds to Pakistan to finance the Pakistani Taliban, including its purchase of guns.

"The indictment describes a number of occasions where Hafiz Khan transferred money to Pakistan, and where money was withdrawn once there."Khan solicited and distributed funds for the Pakistani Taliban, both personally and on behalf of others, and worked with the co-defendants and others to support the Pakistani Taliban's jihad," the indictment states.

The elder Khan also built a madrassa in Pakistan's Swat Valley that provided shelter for the terrorist group, the indictment states. The Pakistani Taliban represent a confederation of Taliban groups in northwestern Pakistan, where they are based, said Bill Roggio, military-affairs analyst who is managing editor of The Long War Journal. Those fighters attack targets in Pakistan and across the border in Afghanistan.

The group, which is headquartered in Quetta, is different from the Afghan Taliban, which has been focused on re-establishing the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan. Both groups swear allegiance to Taliban leader Mullah Omar and have close ties to al Qaeda, he said.

Obama: Freedom or Islam?

From the Washington Times:
President Obama is trying to hit the reset button on his outreach efforts to the world’s Muslims. He would do better to focus on aggressively promoting freedom rather than pandering to Islam.

The first round of outreach - kicked off by Mr. Obama’s June 2009 speech in Cairo - was a spectacular failure. Opinion polling on sentiment towards the United States in countries with Muslim majorities showed an initial burst of enthusiasm, followed in 2010 by a collapse. In some cases, Muslim approval of America fell to levels lower than during the waning days of the George W. Bush administration.

Now the White House is using the timing of Osama bin Laden’s death to argue that al Qaeda’s violent approach to political change is passe, and that the popular uprisings sweeping the Middle East represent the wave of the future. However, al Qaeda already has answered this argument. In the Spring 2011 edition of the terror group’s English-language magazine Inspire, the lead editorial by Yahya Ibrahim notes that a “line that is being pushed by Western leaders is that because the protests in Egypt and Tunisia were peaceful, they proved al Qaeda - which calls for armed struggle - to be wrong. That is another fallacy. Al Qaeda is not against regime changes through protests but it is against the idea that the change should be only through peaceful means to the exclusion of the use of force.”

Of course, not all change occurring in the Middle East is peaceful. U.S. and NATO warplanes support armed rebels in Libya, and al Qaeda notes that this vindicates their views on violence. “If the protesters in Libya did not have the flexibility to use force when needed,” Mr. Ibrahim says, “the uprising would have been crushed.” This point is also being proved in Syria, where the United States has been deaf to desperate pleas from dissidents being mowed down by regime troops with the assistance of Iran. No mere speech by Mr. Obama will bring a springtime of freedom to Damascus.

Mr. Obama’s fixation on the means by which change is coming also overlooks that the substance of the change may be precisely what al Qaeda has always advocated. The White House has pushed for the participation of religiously-based parties in Egypt’s new government, but if the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power in Cairo, it will pursue domestic and foreign policies indistinguishable from those bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri would implement if he were in charge. Islamism is the objective, whether achieved by bombs or ballots.

Mr. Ibrahim says that in al Qaeda’s opinion, “the revolutions that are shaking the thrones of dictators are good for the Muslims, good for the mujahidin and bad for the imperialists of the West and their henchmen in the Muslim world.” He says the terrorists, “are very optimistic and have great expectations of what is to come.” This optimism is not unfounded. Mr. Obama should shift his focus from pandering to Muslim sensibilities to helping shape the outcome of the changes sweeping the Middle East in a way that reflects American values.

The United States is not at war with Islam, but neither should our nation be promoting it. America has traditionally advocated the principles of freedom of conscience and individual liberty, concepts that are in dire need of support in most Muslim states. Taking an unadulterated stand for freedom in the Middle East would be the most gutsy move Mr. Obama could make.

Osama: Release the Porn, Not the Photographs

From PJM:
In the latest bin Laden news, we have learned today that the oh-so-pious Islamic holy warrior had an “extensive” porn collection on his computer. (There’s some question of who viewed the porn but, er, we know who was in charge of the house.) I guess this is all of a piece with the old bird dying his hair and keeping a stash of herbal Viagra. Three wives weren’t enough for him.

But let’s be honest, open the hard drive of almost any computer and you are likely to find some porn — or a lot of it. It’s the way of the world. Birds do it, bees do it, even homicidal religious fanatics in Abbottabad do it, let’s do it, etc. … Osama bin Laden was not alone, not even in the world of Islamic militants — or especially in the world of Islamic militants. According to one report: “The discovery of pornography taken during raids on Islamic militants is not uncommon, officials told Reuters.”

Why am I not surprised? The greater the repression the greater the revolution, as they say.

Meanwhile, I realize there has been quite a dispute about releasing the photographs of the assassination of bin Laden. I can sympathize with that. They must be pretty grisly, for one thing, and what do they tell us, for another. A man shot in the head is a man shot in the head. Furthermore, their publication is another excuse to turn a psychopathic mass-murderer into a martyr. It’s perfect t-shirt material. So we can do without the photograph.

But not the porn.

Think I’m kidding? No, I’m not. The kind of pornography a man looks at it gives us a certain insight into him. I can’t even begin to guess what excited bin Laden’s twisted brain. It could be something quite banal or something, shall we say, rather outré. I leave that to your imagination. But whatever it is, it would be interesting.

Besides that, the promulgation of bin Laden’s porn choices would reduce this holy man further and continue to mock him as a pathetic old man. This, I imagine, was the intention of letting the news of the porn collection out today. More, please. Don’t spare the details.

Women's Rights In Iran: "You've Come a Long Way, Baby"

Eye for an eye: Woman blinded by scorned lover granted permission to throw acid into his eyes by Iran court

From Will at The Other News:
(DailyMail).A woman who was blinded when a scorned lover threw acid in her eyes has the chance to get a gruesome revenge today.A court in Iran has given permission for 32 year-old Ameneh Bahrami to get her own back by pouring acid in the eyes of her attacker, a fellow student at Tehran University.

The court's OId Testament ruling - an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth - has sparked controversy even in Iran where medieval justice still holds sway. But Ameneh still appears bent on revenge.Twenty-seven year old Majid Movahedi threw sulphuric acid in her eyes at a bus-stop in 2004 after he had begged her in vain to marry him. For months he had stalked her and she was left blind and disfigured. She later underwent 19 operations.

The court awarded her £19,000 in compensation and Majid went to jail. But Ameneh did not want the money. She wanted her attacker to suffer the same anguish she was forced to endure for more than six years.'His mother phoned my parents. She asked for mercy. 'She said that Majid would always work for me if he could keep his eyes. But now it's too late,' she was reported as saying yesterday. She has received death threats because of her determination to exact revenge.

'The police have told me not to go out on the street alone,' she said. 'My parents are scared. They think the judges are wrong.'Arrangements have been made for Ameneh to inject the acid into her attacker's eyes as he lies in a Tehran hospital under an aesthetic at midday today. Twenty drops in each eye.

At the last moment Ameneh could still change her mind. But yesterday she said: 'I'm very happy. After six years I'm getting justice. But we are both losers because we have both suffered greatly.

Obama slammed over jokes about 'moats' and 'alligators' in immigration speech... by border residents forced to leave homes

From Will at The Other News:
(DailyMail)  Residents of an Arizona town who fled their homes because of a massive fire say they are outraged at Obama’s claims to have secured the Mexican border.Hundreds of people evacuated their homes in Portal because of the fire that is suspected to have been started by illegal immigrants in the drug and human smuggling corridor, 50 miles north of the Mexico border.

The residents, many of whom have been staying in refugee centres, said they were sickened at Obama’s jokes about Republicans wanting alligators and moats on the border in an immigration speech in Texas.

‘Neither the border, nor daily life is secure,’ wrote the residents affected by the fire, which broke out on Sunday, in a petition they are sending to the White House.‘It is with great wonderment and sadness that we listened to your May 10 speech on immigration issues.

All of the joking about moats and alligators cut residents of Portal, AZ, to the core as we sheltered with friends or at a Red Cross evacuation site, to survive a terrible fire that still threatens our lives and property, as well as our ecotourism-based economy.

Speaking in Palo Alto on Tuesday, President Obama had boasted that the U.S.-Mexico border was more secure than ever before.Jeff Gee, one of the organisers behind the petition and a firefighter still battling the fire, said he was insulted by Obama's speech.

‘I’m really disappointed at current border security, I’m really disappointed at the President’s speech saying that people like me wants moats with alligators, but moats with alligators might work, nothing else,’ he told Fox News.

‘We’re doing everything we can to get the word out that this is serious problem, it’s not just a border issue, the drugs and crime are moving through the corridor and they keep going to major cities.’

Cochise County sheriff Larry Dever said: ‘These people are not overreacting. What they suggest in letter is very deep part of their belief system based on their experience and their experience has been horrific.

‘They see human smuggling and drug trafficking, they sit on their porch and watch people walk through, they've had their homes burgled,’ he told Fox News.‘It's a beautiful landscape and for those that moved out there for a sense of tranquility and peace, that's been destroyed.

The trouble with lies is that the truth eventually catches up Mr. President.

'I'm gonna send that kaffir bitch straight to hell'

From the Daily Mail:
A white teenage mother was stabbed repeatedly and her body dumped in a canal after she clashed with the Asian family of her lovechild, a court has heard.

Laura Wilson, 17, had a brief relationship with Ishaq Hussain, 22, who lived close to her before giving birth to their daughter in June last year.

Sheffield Crown Court was told that Hussain failed to acknowledge the child as his own and did not offer any support, leading to friction between Laura, her family and Hussain.
Laura Wilson went missing from her home in October last year and was found dead two days later
Laura Wilson went missing from her home in October last year and was found dead two days later

Things came to a head last October when she went to Hussain's house and told his family he was the father of the child, prosecutor Nicholas Campbell QC said.

Hussain and his friend, who also had an affair with her and was said to be her first love, plotted to kill her, it is alleged.

They sent a flurry of text messages to one another.

They adopted the language of the cult British film 'Four Lions' about Islamic terrorists and mounted a 'mission to kill Laura Wilson', said Mr Campbell.

Asghar allegedly sent a text message to Hussain which said: 'I'm gonna send that kaffir bitch straight to hell.'
He later told a friend that Laura and her friends had brought trouble to his door and he was 'very angry'.
Mr Campbell said Asghar sent text messages to the friend using words to the effect of 'I'm going to kill Laura.'
'She was a loose cannon and they had to get rid of her,' he said.

Hussain, of Ferham Road, Rotherham, and Ashtiaq Asghar, also from Rotherham, deny murdering Miss Wilson some time between October 8 and October 11 last year.

The teenage student went missing from her home in Holmes and her body was found two days later in a canal.

Mr Campbell told the jury: 'The two defendants are jointly responsible for her murder.'

Laura's older sister, Sarah, looked upon Hussain as being 'like her brother' in the mixed ethnicity area where they lived.

Before the affair, Laura had fallen in love with Asghar and they had a sexual relationship. They resumed the affair after Laura had the baby with Hussain.

Laura struggled at school and played turant, 'but she embraced life with gusto, she was an attractive and popular girl,' Mr Campbell added.

Laura began drinking with Fay Williams had also had a daughter with Hussain. They knew one another before falling pregnant but then they became firm friends.

They realised Hussain would never marry either of them and Laura was only interested in Asghar.

A week before her death, Asghar taunted Laura about a drunken telephone call she had, increasing tensions.

When Hussain started taking his responsibilities to the daughter he had with Miss Williams, Laura and Sarah Wilson took exception and arranged a meeting with Hussain who claimed he was not the father of her baby and blamed Asghar.

Hussain began to panic according to a bystander and grabbed Laura and shook her violently shouting: 'Don't tell my family.'

Mr Campbell said Hussain continued to ignore the daughter as his.

'Laura Wilson wasn't seeking a relationship being in love with Asghar she was seeking some support for her daughter.'

Hussain later told police his family knew about his child with Fay Williams but he was trying to keep the other baby's existence secret.

He was also annoyed that Laura had threatened to 'grass' him to his family. Laura then took matters in to her own hands and went to see the Asghar and Hussain families to tell all.

Laura told Asghar's mother she loved her son and 'wanted to have babies' by him but the mother became angry and hit Laura with a shoe.

She said he would never have a baby with a white girl and called her 'a dirty white bitch who opens her legs.' Laura then saw Hussains's family and told them she had give birth to his baby.

'Her actions that night brought the truth to both of their front doors,' said Mr Campbell.

After that Hussain and Asghar spent more and more time together. Text messages recovered later showed they even talked about getting a gun.

In the language of the film Asghar said: 'I will make a show and make some beans on toast' - a reference to the carnage after a bomb blast, said Mr Campbell.

It was clear the references to 'unbelieving kaffir b*****ds' referred to the 'mission' to kill Laura. The hearing continues.

AP-Gfk poll: Obama approval hits 60 percent

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president's standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.

Comfortable majorities of the public now call Obama a strong leader who will keep America safe. Nearly three-fourths — 73 percent — also now say they are confident that Obama can effectively handle terrorist threats. And he improved his standing on Afghanistan, Iraq and the United States' relationships with other countries.

Despite a sluggish recovery from the Great Recession, 52 percent of Americans now approve of Obama's stewardship of the economy, giving him his best rating on that issue since the early days of his presidency; 52 percent also now like how he's handling the nation's stubbornly high 9 percent unemployment.

The economy remains Americans' top issue.

Impressions of the nation's fiscal outlook have improved following last Friday's positive jobs report, which showed American companies are on a hiring spree. More people now say that the economy got better in the past month and that it's likely to continue doing so in the coming year.

Also, more Americans — 45 percent, up from 35 percent in March — say the country is headed in the right direction. Still, about half — 52 percent — say it's on the wrong track, meaning Obama still has work to do to convince a restive public to stay with the status quo.

Obama to make new Muslim outreach, 'Bin Laden is over, go the way Egypt is going' ..there's just one SMALL PROBLEM

From the LEFT (Daily Beast)

President Obama is planning to renew Muslim outreach in the coming days, in order to appeal to the Muslim world after the death of Osama bin Laden. A senior U.S. official tells The Wall Street Journal that Obama will deli

ver the message as part of a wide-ranging speech as early as next week when he visits Europe. He will argue that the Muslim world is at a crossroads, with bin Laden representing the old way and the democratic uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and elsewhere representing the future. The U.S. is having its diplomats sing a similar song on Arab television and radio. The Obama administration is undecided, however, on whether to lay out a concrete Israel-Palestine peace plan.

And the problem?

Well, the people WANT not the death that Bin Laden was promoting, but MORE of the fundamentalism which gave birth to it.

The Muslim Brotherhood and it’s think alikes find in Barack Obama the useful idiot that the Politburo found in J Carter.

Poll Finds Muslim Brotherhood with Over 70 Percent Favorability in Egypt

While it was suggested during February’s coverage of anti-government protests in Egypt that the radical Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood movement only had the support of a minority of Egyptians, a recent Pew Research Center poll finds that over 70 percent of the Egyptian public holds a favorable view of the Islamist organization. The same poll also notably finds that the more secular April 6 movement has a similar appeal.

The Haaretz Web site contains the AP article “Poll: More Than Half of Egyptians Want to Cancel Treaty with Israel,” which notes: “The conservative Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and the largely secular April 6 movement - two groups closely involved in the uprising, had the highest approval ratings in society, with over 70 percent seeing them in a very or somewhat favorable light.”

On the February 8 NBC Nightly News, correspondent Richard Engel had estimated the group’s appeal to be between 20 and 40 percent.

And, as the headline alludes to, 54 percent of poll respondents expressed the view that Egypt’s thirty-year treaty with Israel should be ended: “According to the poll results, only 36 percent of Egyptians are in favor of maintaining the treaty, compared with 54 percent who would like to see it scrapped.”

The article recounts: “The poll, based on interviews with 1,000 Egyptians around the country, was conducted between March 24 and April 7 as part of the Spring 2011 Pew Global Attitudes survey that was conducted in 22 countries.”

The article also notes that 45 percent of wealthy Egyptians and 40 percent of college-educated Egyptians supported pulling out of the treaty.

However I am sure a nice speech, and some fine sounding lamb like words about ‘democracy’ will make it all just fine.

Yesterday …..

The Persecution of Egypt’s Coptic Christians Continues

The Arab Spring has not been kind to Egypt’s Christian minority. Over the weekend, Muslims apparently incited by Islamist hardliners again terrorized Coptic Christians, in what is now a pattern of attacks against them and their churches. Possibly the Islamists are jockeying for political power in this transitional period, or even trying to immediately effect a religious cleansing similar to the one that has happened in Iraq.

Copts, numbering about 10 million, constitute the largest Christian group and the largest religious minority in the Middle East. Their size will likely prevent an escalating persecution of them from going unnoticed for long in the West.

Bin Laden's Family Threatens the United States

The apple does not fall far from the tree.
  • Statement From the Family of Osama bin Laden.(NYTimes).Statement from the family of Sheikh Osama bin Laden
I Omar Ossama Binladin and my brothers the lawful children and heirs of the Ossama Binladin (OBL) have noted wide coverage of the news of the death of our father, but we are not convinced on the available evidence in the absence of dead body, photographs, and video evidence that our natural father is dead. Therefore, with this press statement, we seek such conclusive evidence to believe the stories published in relation to 2 May 2011 operation Geronimo as declared by the President of United States Barrack Hussein Obama in his speech that he authorized the said operation and killing of OBL and later confirmed his death.
If OBL has been killed in that operation as President of United States has claimed then we are just in questioning as per media reports that why an unarmed man was not arrested and tried in a court of law so that truth is revealed to the people of the world. If he has been summarily executed then, we question the propriety of such assassination where not only international law has been blatantly violated but USA has set a very different example whereby right to have a fair trial, and presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of law has been sacrificed on which western society is built and is standing when a trial of OBL was possible for any wrongdoing as that of Iraqi President Sadam Hussein and Serbian President Slobodan Miloševic'. We maintain that arbitrary killing is not a solution to political problems and crime's adjudication as Justice must be seen to be done.
It is also unworthy of the special forces to shoot unarmed female family members of Binladen killing a female and that of one of his son.
Most importantly, when it is a common knowledge that OBL's family is residing at one place outside KSA, why they were not contacted to receive his dead body. His sudden and un witnessed burial at sea has deprived the family of performing religious rights of a Muslim man. Finally, now that the operation is concluded we wish the Government of Pakistan to release and hand over all minors of the family and all the family members are reunited at one place and are repatriated to their country of origin, especially female members of the family to avoid further oppression and we seek international support to that effect.
Without agreeing to the ways of OBL as to how he professed, believed and operated, We Omar Ossama Binladin, and my brothers, the lawful children of the Ossama Binladin (OBL) herewith demand an inquiry under UNO to reach to the accuracy of the facts as stated by United States into the fundamental question as to why our father was not arrested and tried but summarily executed without a court of law. We are putting these questions to the United Nations, OIC, President of United States that a necessary evidence is presented to the family in private and or public to make us believe what they claim, and all the remaining family members are repatriated and united after necessary initial investigation.
Failure to answer these questions will force us to go to International forum for justice such as International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice and UN must take notice of the violation of international law and assist us to have answers for which we are lawful in seeking them. A panel of eminent British and international lawyers is being constituted and a necessary action may be taken if no answers are furnished within 30 days of this statement.

America as Jackie Chan

George Friedman argues that by fighting terrorism with allies — and not just Pakistan — who are themselves part of the terrorist nexus, the U.S. has enmeshed itself in an insoluble contradiction. It has denied itself any chance at victory as the price of having to fight terrorism. He asks whether America, by the choice of its allies, has implicitly adopted the strategy of not winning, lest it destabilize its friends.

This is the ultimate contradiction in U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and even the so-called war on terror as a whole. …  Broadly fighting terrorism requires the cooperation of the Muslim world, as U.S. intelligence and power is inherently limited. …

The United States must either develop the force and intelligence to wage war without any assistance — which is difficult to imagine given the size of the Muslim world and the size of the U.S. military — or it will have to accept half-hearted support and duplicity. Alternatively, it could accept that it will not win in Afghanistan and will not be able simply to eliminate terrorism. These are difficult choices, but the reality of Pakistan drives home that these, in fact, are the choices.

Both sides are fighting in a manner that recalls the Jackie Chan movie in which our hero must fight multiple bad guys while preserving a museum full of priceless Ming vases. The question Friedman never answers completely is whether the choices of accepting “half-hearted support and duplicity” and “that it will not win in Afghanistan and will not be able simply to eliminate terrorism” are equivalent. Whether they amount to the same thing. In other words, whether it is, in the president’s favorite phrase, “a false choice”: heads you win, tails I lose.

The desire not to have to make a choice may account for why the Obama administration wants less — and not more — authority from Congress to prosecute the war it denies exists. The Danger Room describes the administration’s contradictory desire to both expand the war while simultaneously limiting its authority to do so.

God is Great, but I really have to pee

‘Maybe he was looking for the bathroom’: Family defends Yemeni passenger who stormed cockpit, shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ as plane came in to land at San Francisco

  • Cousin says he may have got confused about plane’s layout
  • Third scare in two days for air passengers in America
  • Security alerts at U.S. train stations and airports after death of Bin Laden
  • Passengers say man yelled ‘God is great’ in Arabic as he rushed up the aisle
  • ‘We were all looking at our lives flash before our eyes’

The Yemeni man who was wrestled to the floor after pounding on the cockpit door of a plane approaching San Francisco may have mistaken it for the bathroom.

Rageit Almurisi cannot speak English very well and could have misunderstood the signs inside the jet, his cousin claimed.

The maths teacher, who was heard yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he allegedly battered the door, had also only been on three planes in his life and would have been unfamiliar with the layout.
