‘British whites’ are the minority in London for the first time as census shows number of UK immigrants has jumped by 3million in 10 years

White British people are now in a minority in London for the first time, it emerged today as census data revealed that the immigrant population of England and Wales went up by 3million over the past decade.

Just 3.7million Londoners described their ethnicity as ‘White British’ in 2011 – down from 4.3million in 2001, and making up 44.9 per cent of the city’s population.

It is believed to be the first time that British whites have become a minority in any region of the UK.

Another major change to the nation came in the decreasing number of Christians – 4million fewer people claimed to belong to the faith as a quarter of Britons said they had no religion.

In an article written in July after the release of the initial raw headline results from the 2011 Census, I noted how the largest population increases in the country appeared to take place in the boroughs possessing the largest Muslim populations, and today’s release of census results relating to religion appear to confirm this supposition. In July I noted that Tower Hamlets and Newham were recorded as displaying the greatest population increase between 2001 and 2011, and today’s results state that Tower Hamlets has the highest share of Muslims in the country, and Newham the second, with the percentages standing at respectively 34.5% and 32.0%.

A Muslim man was jailed for life today for stabbing his devout Christian ex-girlfriend 13 times after they split following bitter rows about him wanting their young daughter to convert to Islam.

Esther Arogundade, 32, was attacked by kitchen porter Shola Adebiyi in her own home after she began a relationship with another man.

Adebiyi also drank oven cleaner in an attempt to kill himself and phoned Esther’s new lover to say he would never see her again before confessing to the killing to a friend.

Police broke into the mother-of-two’s home in Salford, Greater Manchester, and found KFC worker Esther lying dead on the kitchen floor with multiple stab wounds to her back and front.
