CAIR Leaders Defend Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood President

CAIR-LA Director Hussam Alyoush pictured with Sheikh Qaradawi, spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood

Via IPT:
[W]hile Egyptians take to the streets to oppose what they claim is a nascent tyranny, Morsi and his Islamist government can count on support from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). For example, CAIR-Los Angeles boss Hussam Ayloush praised Morsi for assuming more power in order to prevent “corrupt judges” from the “undermining and undoing of every democratic step.”
In a Facebook post, Ayloush blamed Egypt’s internal strife on the secular opposition: “Much of the Egyptian opposition seem to be more interested in opposing Morsi and the MB than actually helping Egypt become a stable and institutional democracy,”
CAIR-New York’s Cyrus McGoldrick disparaged criticism of Morsi as “a last stand by old pro-West/Mubarak/Israel crowd to keep power in judiciary.”
CAIR-San Francisco chief Zahra Billoo dismissed American concerns that the Islamist-backed draft constitution wouldn’t protect human rights. “Why do we care about what the Egyptian Constitution says about indefinite detention, when it is being practiced by the U.S. government?” she wrote in a Twitter post Monday.

Meet the New Dictator… Mohammed Morsi Declares Martial Law in Egypt

From Gateway Pundit:
Thousands of Egyptians marched against Mohammed Morsi again today.
The government of President Morsi approved legislation today reimposing martial law and ordering soldiers to arrest civilians.
Times of India reported:
Struggling to subdue continuing street protests, the government of President Mohamed Morsi has approved legislation reimposing martial law by calling on the armed forces to keep order and authorizing soldiers to arrest civilians, Egypt’s state media reported on Saturday.
Morsi has not yet issued the order, the flagship state newspaper Al Ahram reported. But even if merely a threat, the preparation of the measure suggested an escalation in the political battle between Egypt’s new Islamist leaders and their secular opponents over an Islamist-backed draft constitution. The standoff has already threatened to derail the culmination of Egypt’s promised transition to a constitutional democracy nearly two years after the revolt against the former leader Hosni Mubarak.
“President Morsi will soon issue a decision for the participation of the armed forces in the duties of maintaining security and protection of vital state institutions until the constitution is approved and legislative elections are finished,” Al Ahram reported, suggesting that martial law would last until at least February. Parliamentary elections are expected to be held two months after the constitutional referendum, which is scheduled for next Saturday.
A short time later, a military spokesman read a statement over state television echoing the report of the president’s order. The military “realizes its national responsibility for maintaining the supreme interests of the nation and securing and protecting the vital targets, public institutions, and the interests of the innocent citizens,” the spokesman said.
Expressing “sorrow and concern” over recent developments, the military spokesman warned of “divisions that threaten the state of Egypt.”
Of course, you will hear no condemnation from our Dictator-lover of a President.

CAIR Chief, Ibrahim Hooper: “Jesus And Mohammed Are Brothers”…

Jesus and Muhammad are Brothers — Ibrahim Hooper
During the Christmas season, Christian families seek to maintain a focus on Jesus and his legacy.
Many of our Christian brothers and sisters may be surprised to know that Muslims love and revere Jesus as one of God’s greatest messengers to mankind, just as we love and revere the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon them both.
The Prophet Muhammad sought to erase any distinctions between the message he taught and that taught by Jesus, whom he called God’s “spirit and word.”
Prophet Muhammad said: “Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.”
“Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! God gives thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and in (the company of) those nearest to God.’”
Let's see, we've got Jesus the Jewish Messiah on the one hand:

And, on the other hand, we've got, Mohammed The Pedophile Prophet and Murderer of Jews:

Mitch McConnell agrees to let Obama Fiscal Cliff Proposal come to vote; Harry Reid declines

From Barrack Now:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed bringing the absurd fiscal cliff proposal brought forth by Barack Obama via Timothy Geithner. He was calling Majority Leader Harry Reid's bluff and it worked. Reid is refusing to vote on Obama's plan. This is precisely why I advocated such a position back on November 30th.

Via The Hill:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday offered an amendment to force a vote on President Obama’s deficit-reduction plan, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was having none of it.

“Last week [Treasury] Secretary [Timothy] Geithner brought up a proposal that was so unserious,” McConnell said on the floor, “I would like to see if my Democratic friends would like to support it.”

McConnell suggested that the Senate vote on what he called the president’s “ridiculous” plan as an amendment to the Russian trade bill that is being considered.
Here is McConnell's speech:

The reason for this is simple. If we are headed toward economic collapse regardless of these negotiations, giving Obama everything he wants will ensure that he owns the mess. Unfortunately, John Boehner doesn't see it the same way that McConnell does. Consequently, he's playing right into the hands of Obama's pseudo-negotiations and machinations, which illustrates perfectly the difference between caving and bluffing.

The more of these negotiations take place, the more opportunity Obama will have to blame Republican intransigence when the collapse happens.

In short, by negotiating with Obama, Boehner is playing right into his hands.

It'd be nice to see Republican leaders have as much spine when they're in the majority as when they are in the minority.

Bono Says, “Aid is just a stop-gap. Commerce [and] entrepreneurial capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid"

I told a friend of mine about this, expressing some shock that Bono, who often seems to be a kind of Socialist, understands Capitalism.

My friends response,

"Bono actually wants to help, so he is realistic, unlike all the Liberal posers who are motivated only by self-congratulation."

From Values and Capitalism:

The three quotations below carry virtually the same message, yet come from very different sources:
  1. "Aid is just a stop-gap. Commerce [and] entrepreneurial capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid."
  2. "In dealing with poverty here and around the world, welfare and foreign aid are a Band-Aid. Free enterprise is a cure."
  3. "Entrepreneurship is the most sure way of development."
On November 12, in a speech at Georgetown University, U2's Bono (quote #1) discussed the role of enterprise and capitalism in alleviating global poverty. For a rock star whose travels to developing nations and advocacy of foreign aid are well known, this recent focus on commerce has surprised many observers—and apparently the man himself:
For AEI President Arthur Brooks (quote #2), the importance of free enterprise in helping the poor has long been clear. As he writes in "The Road to Freedom:"
The number of people in the world living on a dollar a day—a traditional poverty measure—has fallen by 80 percent since 1970, from 11.2 percent of the world's population to 2.3 percent.
Brooks, an economist by training, goes on to write that great poverty still exists in the world because free enterprise still has not spread widely enough. In this video, he argues that "If we're good Samaritans, if we really love the poor, we have to fight for free enterprise for everyone."
Yet, as Brooks attests, statistics only tell us part of the whole story. To truly appreciate the positive results and remaining challenges of free enterprise in the developing world, we need to witness how free-market capitalism plays out among the lives of real people in developing countries.
Paul Kagame (quote #3), the president of Rwanda, was an early proponent of private investment and improved rule of law, though his record in other areas has been controversial. Nevertheless, the people of Rwanda are creating success stories through their own willpower and entrepreneurship. In a forthcoming documentary film, "Mama Rwanda," filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson tells the story of two working mothers who "represent a new generation of women transforming post-genocide Rwanda into one of the top ten fastest growing economies in the world." Watch the trailer below.
On December 11, Values & Capitalism will host "Entrepreneurship in the developing world: Lessons from the front lines," a conversation at AEI featuring Michael Gerson of the ONE Campaign, Chris Horst of HOPE International, and Andrea McDaniel of the As We Forgive Rwanda Initiative. As we approach this season of giving and take stock of many blessings over the last year, please join us for this timely discussion on how people and policy are making a difference among the lives of our neighbors abroad.

Geoffrey Clarfield: Muslims in denial about the existence of the Jewish temple

From Will at THE OTHER NEWS:

(NP).On the 25th day of the lunar month of Kislev (Dec. 8), Jews around the world will celebrate the eight-day holiday of Hanukah. Hanukah commemorates the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple in the second century BCE by Jewish freedom fighters (the Maccabees) who resisted the Macedonian regime in Damascus. The regime had violently attempted to enforce its polytheistic Hellenistic religion on the inhabitants of Judea — a people who held the then extraordinary belief in the one invisible God of all humankind and whose temple was in Jerusalem.

The story is told in great detail in the Book of Maccabees I and II, which, originally written in Hebrew, now survives in Greek and Latin versions in the Christian Bible. The Jews have kept the story alive through the Hanukah festival itself and the retention of the scroll of Hanukah (the Megillat Antiochus).

The story of Hanukah is the archetypal story of the fight for religious freedom.
It has been adopted and celebrated by American presidents at the White House for more than a decade, as an American tribute to the biblical roots of the country’s national dedication to freedom.
For 2,000 years religious Jews, Christians and Muslims, and later secular scholars, have all believed that the temple ruins lie beneath the two Muslim mosques that were later built upon the Temple Mount by conquering Arabs after the death of Muhammad — and that the surviving pre-Islamic “Wailing Wall” is the outer wall of the Temple courtyard that existed in Roman times during the ministry of Jesus.

However, 13 years ago, the late Yasser Arafat (and since then his political heirs have taken up the cause) abruptly decided that there is no evidence that there ever was a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and, therefore, that Jews — and ipso facto Israelis — have no right to claim Jerusalem as their religious, historical and political capital. A wave of Temple denial is now sweeping the Arab and Islamic world and many fellow intellectual travellers in the journalistic and archaeological world are joining the bandwagon.

The historical, archaeological and literary evidence for the existence of the sacred Jewish temple underneath and beside the two Mosques that now bestride the Temple Mount is overwhelming. It includes thousands of scholarly articles and books supported by scores of archaeological digs and studies of historical documents. The best introduction to the topic is Cambridge Professor Simon Goldhill’s most readable book, The Temple of Jerusalem.

For over a decade the Muslim authorities (the Waqf) who now control the Temple Mount have been despoiling its archaeology through illegal excavations and site destruction.

Nevertheless, the physical evidence that they have discarded, and which Israeli archaeologists pore over like forensic scientists at a crime scene, shows signs of the temple’s existence, the most recent being coins minted by the Hasmonean rulers of Judea who were the royal and priestly heirs of the Maccabees, as well as coins minted during the first Jewish revolt against the Romans in 70 AD.
It was these pagan conquerors who burnt the temple and brought its sacred treasure back to Rome, and whose golden menorah was beautifully reproduced on the Arch of Titus. A three-dimensional copy of this menorah now stands in front of the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem, walking distance from where the original once stood, 2,000 years earlier.

Abu Abdallah ibn al-Hasan, also known as Hamzah al-Isfahani (from the city of Isfahan in what is now Iran) was a Persian Muslim scholar who was born in 893 AD and died around 971 AD. He wrote extensively about the pre-Islamic history of pagan Persia. Although he wrote in Arabic, historians believe that he had access to Iranian court chronicles and epics whose originals no longer exist. He was also fascinated by the history of the Jewish people. In his book called, The Chronicle of the Israelites, Al Isfahani wrote:
… between the construction of the Temple by Solomon and the reign of Alexander, 717 years intervened; then between the destruction of the Temple by the Persians and the death of Alexander, 269 years passed. The appearance of the Messiah (peace be upon him) occurred in the 65th year since the reign of Alexander in the 51st year from the beginning of the Arsacids. The birth of the Messiah (peace be upon him) had occurred during the 42nd year of the reign of Augustus, king of the Romans. Then followed the destruction of the Temple at the hands of Titus, son of Vespasian, King of the Romans… after the warriors had been killed and their children had been taken captive to the city of Rome, and the Temple was demolished until not a single stone remained on top of the other … From the destruction of the Temple by Titus until the end of the reign of Constantine 272 years passed.”
Al Isfahani wrote during the height of what scholars of Islamic history call “classical Islam,” when Islamic intellectuals and scientists were most open to the intellectual and scientific heritage of the Greeks that they had adopted. In the above passage we see a scholar who is knowledgeable about the following things: historic periods; who conquered whom; what the chronology was; the trials and tribulations of the temple; the birth of Jesus; and the Roman conquest, which not surprisingly corresponds closely to Josephus’s description in his Jewish War (written shortly after the Roman destruction of the temple) and other historical sources. The existence of the Jewish Temple of Jerusalem is never in doubt.

Islam says it recognizes Jesus, Did Jesus not chase the merchants out of the Temple?

Obama Promises Palestinians He Will Not Let Israel Move Forward With New Settlement Construction

Has Israel Become Territory Occupied By Obama?
RAMALLAH, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — Jordanian King Abdullah II conveyed U.S. assurances to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that Washington will not allow a new Israeli settlement plan to pass, a Palestinian official said Thursday.
The United States will put pressure on Israel to cancel a recent building plan, in exchange for not starting the Palestinian efforts to join UN agencies, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
King Abdullah II, the first head of state to visit the Palestinian territories after the UN vote, told Abbas that U.S. President Barak Obama’s administration will not impose sanctions on the Palestinian National Authority.
He also said that Washington will work on preventing the construction of new housing units in the E1 area, which connects the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim with Jerusalem. Israel’s construction there is highly controversial since the corridor blocs a possible formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank with a territorial continuity.

NEIN:

Health info collected to “protect the President”

6 December 2012: Whether you are at the doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic awaiting treatment for you or your loved one, how many of you read the fine print on those multi-page legal notices pertaining to privacy practices? I suspect not many, yet you sign them anyway, especially when you are at your most vulnerable. But, have you read them recently?

A caller to The Hagmann & Hagmann Report said that she took her daughter to a medical facility for treatment of an illness on December 4, 2012. Among the forms she was handed was a two-page privacy notice that she was given pursuant to state and federal law. Upon arriving back home and after things settled down, she decided to review the paperwork she received from the medical facility – despite not having a magnifying glass that would have helped get through the tiny, 8 point font.

Buried in the middle of page two of this finely typed legal notice oriented in landscape format, located between the subheadings of “military” and “inmates” is an interesting addition to at least one hospital’s privacy disclosure statement. Under the heading of “National Security,” the notice states that the treating medical facility may disclose your health information to federal officials “in order to protect the President, other officials or foreign heads of state.”

Please stop here and carefully consider that statement. It is critical to point out that this statement is an addition to the typical national security warning seemingly ubiquitous in post 9-11 disclosure statements in America. It specifically identifies the President [of the United States], other officials or foreign heads of state. Again, please contemplate the meaning of these words, their intent and the context in which they are written.

Changes of terminology

After requesting and receiving a copy of the privacy notice from this caller, I noted that the document contained an effective date of April 14, 2003. I contacted the medical facility for information about their privacy policy and specifically to determine if the last changes made to the privacy notice were indeed eight years ago.

After being transferred to four different departments, I ended up talking to a representative of the facility’s legal department. A representative from that department originally provided her name and appeared willing to talk about their written privacy policy. After confirming that we were both looking at the same document, I asked when the privacy policy was last updated. She stated that the policy is constantly being reviewed and updated to conform to newly enacted federal and state laws. She stated that while 2003 was printed on the disclosure, that does not mean it has not been changed or updated since that date.

When asked when the last update was made to that document, she stated that she would have to research the matter to identify the exact date and what changes were made, although stated that privacy notice was updated at least once this year, and perhaps twice.

“I’d rather not say”

At this point, I drew her attention to the section in question, to the specific line “in order to protect the President, other officials or foreign heads of state.” I questioned whether this was a recent addition or if the verbiage was contained in the original document. I also asked if this statement was added in anticipation of the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act.

At this point, she again asked me the name of the publication I represent and the reason for my question. Clearly, she was growing increasingly uncomfortable with my questions, and finally stated that before providing any additional information, she would have to check with another department head. In the interim, however, she advised me that I did not have her consent to use her name or title in any public venue. When pressed whether this one sentence was a recent addition and assured that she would not be publicly cited, her response was simply “I’d rather not say.” At that point, my inquiry was promptly terminated.

Following this interview, I contacted a source at a local medical facility I’ve known for over two decades. When asked about this sentence, this source confirmed that in their case, which is likely to be the case on a national level, major changes to their privacy notice were made in early 2012. The terminology was identical, suggesting that the changes were federal in origin.

Protection from the informed?

Medical facilities and the information about individuals they compile is extremely personal and extensive. Many “privileges” enjoyed by Americans such as gun ownership and concealed carrying of a firearm, even driving and employment are contingent upon the content of the information contained in these records. The policies have existed for decades without the need for specific reference to perceived threats to one man or office, other government officials and even foreign leaders. The addition of this specific threat identification in addition to the standard wording serves a specific purpose. To the majority of people the wording will raise no concern and certainly no alarm. To others watching what is taking place they will, as they should. To those who will argue that they have nothing to hide so they have no reason to fear, think again.

Rapper Big Boi On Obama: Warns “I’m Not Pro-Govt…Our Freedoms Are Getting Taken Away”

From Gateway Pundit:
As rare as it is, it’s so refreshing to hear common sense come out of the entertainment industry.  During an interview to discuss the release of his new album, rapper Big Boimade the following response when asked about the president:
“I’m not pro-government at all, I’m pro-people. Our freedoms are getting taken away every day with things that people aren’t aware of, like the [National Defense Authorization Act].  I don’t care who the president is–it ain’t just all about who’s black or who’s white or who’s Republican or Democrat, it’s about who is for the betterment of people, period. … I ain’t on nobody’s team, you feel me? I’m about the American people.”
The Washington Free Beacon reports,
Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, the newest record from Atlanta rapper Big Boi, is set to drop next Tuesday. As Washington anticipates the album, a recent interview between the rapper and Pitchfork is gaining some attention.
When Big Boi was asked about a song off of his last album, the interview turned to politics and “his ambivalent feelings about President Obama”:
Pitchfork: You had a few things to say about Obama on Sir Lucious [Left Foot], but it was recorded before he became president. And there was your song ”Sumthin’s Gotta Give” with Mary J. Blige where she sang about cheering for Obama…
BB: I didn’t tell her to do that.
Pitchfork: No? She just did it?
BB: On my damn record. I had a problem with it.
If the rapper once supported the president, he is frustrated with him now.  The interview continues:
BB: I’m not pro-government at all, I’m pro-people. Our freedoms are getting taken away every day with things that people aren’t aware of, like the [National Defense Authorization Act]. I don’t care who the president is–it ain’t just all about who’s black or who’s white or who’s Republican or Democrat, it’s about who is for the betterment of people, period.
Pitchfork: Do you have any feelings about Obama’s first term now that he’s been re-elected?
BB: Nope. What did he do? They say he’s trying to clean up a mess, right? Well, he needs a big-ass broom, and he gotta keep on sweeping. I ain’t on nobody’s team, you feel me? I’m about the American people.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Militia Beat Two Anti-Morsi Protesters To Death

CAIRO: An Egyptian activist told ONTV’s Yousri Fouda early Thursday morning that Muslim Brotherhood members attack the field hospital she had been in on Wednesday evening, attempting to take the injured and threatening women, demanding they leave the area.
Naglaa Bader said the Brotherhood supporters entered the area and began pushing and moving protesters at the field hospital, which had been set up to give medical assistance to protesters injured in the ongoing violence near the presidential palace.
“They looked through one injured man for his ID,” she told Fouda.
When Bader asked the men what their intentions were with the injured, she was told that they did not want to kill anyone.
“We will just break his hand, the hand that threw rocks at us, so he spends 6 months in treatment to give us a break,” Bader said he told her.
Then the angry Brotherhood attackers tried to throw out the women at the hospital, including Bader and Mona Mina, the head of the Doctors Without Rights organization.
The women refused, saying they would only leave if everyone was forced out.
Then, “one of the men came over and threatened to kill Mina. He said that if he ever saw her face again he would,” she added. “The threat came in an extremely scary tone.”
ONTV is showing a live feed of the ongoing violence, including angry Brotherhood groups singling out anti-President Morsi protesters and beating them brutally, with sticks, sharp objects and knives. In one of the many images, a man is seen being surrounded by a group of men. He is hit by something and when his head turns to face the camera, blood is seen streaking down his face.
Egyptian activists and political groups confirmed the death of two anti-President Mohamed Morsi protesters around the Presidential Palace after Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters attacked the two and killed them.

Former NAACP Chapter President: No Reason For Blacks To Vote For Obama Except Race

Reverend Bryant, who used to be a NAACP Chapter President, is promoting a movie called "Runaway Slaves."

Yesterday he appeared on MSNBC, and told the truth.

REVEREND C.L. BRYANT: By telling the truth about who they’ve been historically. That has been distorted. The truth of the matter is this – and Mr. Reed did in fact say well, the president did well through the south – but the truth of the matter is this: take away this president’s skin color and take away the race card that is played so often with this president and there’s really no reason for black people to vote for him or Latinos in that frame as well, because when you look at the unemployment rate among those two demographics, when you look at the poverty rate among young white females, there is no reason for anybody to have re-elected this president in those demographics except for the emotional issue of race.

WSJ:

DeMint to Leave Senate to Run Heritage Foundation
by DANIEL HENNINGER

South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. DeMint will leave his post as South Carolina's junior senator in early January to take control of the Washington think tank, which has an annual budget of about $80 million.

Sen. DeMint's departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint's replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.

Mr. DeMint was reelected to a second term in 2010. The 61-year-old senator had announced earlier that he would not seek a third term.

Mr. Feulner, who is 71 and planned to step down, is to be named chancellor of Heritage, a new position, and will continue in a part-time capacity as chairman of the foundation's Asian Studies Center.

In an interview preceding the succession announcement, Sen. DeMint said he is taking the Heritage job because he sees it as a vehicle to popularize conservative ideas in a way that connects with a broader public.

"This is an urgent time," the senator said, "because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections." Mr. DeMint, who was a market researcher before he entered politics, said he plans to take the Heritage Foundation's traditional research plus that of think tanks at the state level and "translate those policy papers into real-life demonstrations of things that work." He said,

"We want to figure out what works at the local and state level" and give those models national attention.

Mr. DeMint, an active conservative partisan often at odds with his party's leadership, says he will "protect the integrity of Heritage's research and not politicize the policy component. Heritage is not just another grassroots political group."

Still, the senator acknowledges that the political fires still burn: "This really gets my blood going again thinking about the possibilities. This is the time to elevate the conservative cause."

Sen. DeMint plans to join Heritage in the first week of January, before the new session of Congress begins.

Harry Reid WANTS TO BRING FOOD TO THE SENATE SCREENING OF STEVEN SPIELBERG’s MOVIE LINCOLN

No kidding.

Gretawire:

NOW SENATE MAJORITY LEADER Harry Reid WANTS TO BRING FOOD TO THE SENATE SCREENING OF STEVEN SPIELBERG’s MOVIE LINCOLN (do we have to pay for the food, too?)

Instead working 100 % on the fiscal cliff crisis that is rapidly descending upon the nation, Senator Harry Reid has apparently turned himself into a event planner (weddings next?)

The Senate will screen the new Steven Spielberg movie (scroll back to yesterday’s postings.) I assume at a minimum you, the taxpayer, will be paying to keep the Capitol open longer for the big event screening and for all the extra security (how does THAT make you feel?)

Now there is more….apparently the Senate Majority Event Planner wants to order food for the party / screening (see below.) Are you paying for that too?

See the note below from my FNC colleague:
——-

Urgent: FNC Confirms Senate “Lincoln” Screening

From a Senate aide with knowledge of the arrangement:

Set for Dec 19 in the Congressional Auditorium in the CVC

Members and spouses only

Dec. 19th

Maj Ldr Harry Reid is seeking a waiver to allow food in auditorium.

Told snacks will include:

Unbuttered popcorn

Bottled water

Movie snacks (candy)

FUN FACT:

On their way into the auditorium, members will pass statues of three members of the Confederate army that are part of the National Statuary Hall Collection (each state has 2 statues to commemorate historic citizens):

James Z. George Mississippi Colonel in confederacy

SYRIA LOADS SARIN NERVE GAS INTO BOMBS

From NBC:

Updated at 8:20 a.m. ET: The Syrian military is prepared to use chemical weapons against its own people and is awaiting final orders from President Bashar Assad, U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.
The military has loaded the precursor chemicals for sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into aerial bombs that could be dropped onto the Syrian people from dozens of fighter-bombers, the officials said.
As recently as Tuesday, officials had said there was as yet no evidence that the process of mixing the "precursor" chemicals had begun. But Wednesday, they said their worst fears had been confirmed: The nerve agents were locked and loaded inside the bombs.

The New York Times, David Kirkpatrick on the Situation in Cairo

I'm not posting this because I agree with it, or believe it to be true. I am posting it because it is interesting, and because it's another perspective from someone who is on the ground.

From yesterday's Hugh Hewitt Radio Show:
HH: Earlier today, I read Elbaradei had announced that this was the end of any possible legitimacy for the Morsi government as violence had been taken up by the Islamists. Is that a widely shared point of view? Or is that simple Elbaradei?
DK: That view is widely shared among the secular protestors here. You know, this is a very complicated situation politically, and an instance where each side has got a valid point. You know the old joke just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after me? You know, the Brotherhood has bought into some scary conspiracy theories, that the secular political forces are, would rather sacrifice democracy than to see them win, will obstruct the new constitution at all cost, and that elements of the old government, including the still-operating Mubarak-appointed courts, are out to get them. And they’re not wrong, to be honest. I mean, there are so-called liberals here who would rather sacrifice democracy than to see the Islamists win, and there are Mubarak loyalists on the courts that are determined to sabotage the political process. At the same time, the Islamists in the face of this have used these conspiracy theories to justify basically trying to strong arm through a very flawed constitution. And so the other side says you know, wait a second, you’re just telling us that might makes right, that because you at the moment control the state, because you’re more popular, more politically powerful, you could just muscle this thing through. You’re going to suspend democracy for the moment in order to establish, you say, democracy in the long term. Now obviously, that is problematic to any of your Western listeners. You know, we sort of, we know how that ends.
HH: Now Andrew McCarthy, writing at National Review, has tried to channel the secularists by saying they know what the Brotherhood’s agenda is, they understand where they’re going, even if they haven’t gone there yet. How legitimate in your view, David Kirkpatrick, is McCarthy’s concern that the Brotherhood is, as described in Lawrence Wright’s book The Looming Tower, they have an agenda and they will move about it?
DK: I don’t think it’s, I think it’s misplaced. You know, there are Islamists here who are known as Salafis. They’re literalists, they favor a return to a kind of almost medieval, Islamic law. They’re a minority. The Brotherhood, they’re politicians. They are not violent by nature, and they have over the last couple of decades evolved more and more into a moderate, conservative but religious, but moderate, regular old political force. I find that a lot of the liberal fears of the Brotherhood are somewhat outside. That said, you know, you don’t know what their ultimate vision of what the good life looks like. But in the short term, I think they just want to win elections.
HH: Now the Copts, I have a good friend who’s a Copt. He’s a doctor who takes care of me, and he has family in Egypt, an extended family. They’re very worried that there will be no place for them in Egypt, and that they will be forced out or brutalized. What do you make of the Copts’ concern, especially given the number of incidents over the past few years of violence against them?
DK: Well, you are right. The Copts are freaking out for sure. Other Christians here tell me that they think the Copts, they’re panic is excessive, but it comes out of a long history of sectarian conflict. As I said, the Muslim Brotherhood are politicians. Last Christmas, they deployed their youth to stand in circles protecting churches around the country in a gesture of good faith. And they’ve done things like that repeatedly, because you know, about 10% of the country is Christian, and they would like those votes, too. They are not, they’re not explicitly at, they say they stand for non-sectarian citizenship. That said, I can’t say that the Copts fears are entirely groundless, because there are, there is a lot of hostility on both sides of that line here.
HH: Last question, David Kirkpatrick, and thanks for staying up late and I know you’re on deadline. Do you expect it to get worse before it gets better in terms of street violence?
DK: I am not going to make any predictions, but I do think that the events of tonight are going to pose a very big challenge to President Morsi and his hopes of rushing through this constitution with a referendum on December 15th. Three of his advisors have quit today, and I think he’s going to face a lot of pressure to try to go slow, or hold some more kind of dialogue.

My opinion is, he's wrong. His assessment of the distinction between "Salafis" and the "Muslim Brotherhood" is naive. This man does not understand war.

And, this is a war, a Jihad.
