IF these headlines are true, then President Trump is very close to losing my support. Which should surprise no one who knows me.

No need to panic, Pasto. You know Trump. This is a negotiation.

MR,
This is pretty crazy.

It is true that part of Trump's negotiation style when working with groups of people, is to make wildly divergent extreme comments, so people on all sides will come to the table and work things out together.

If he does settle for anything close to this, I am with you.

Sorry. I thought Pasto posted the comments because it sounded like "him". smile

I believe that what Trump is proposing is not an infringement of our rights. Rather he wants our police to be able to intervene more effectively and with greater rapidity when individuals who are shown to have chronic patterns of violence and instability are mouthing off about shooting up a school or the public square.

Joe Q. Policeman is not going to knock on my door. Nor will he knock on yours. But for my nurse friend who has called repeatedly about the next door neighbor shooting off his gun in his yard at night (he is schizophrenic) with the police telling her there is nothing they can do - this conversation is about her and her right to life.

The problem, TLEP, is whatever power we grant the government will eventually be in the hands of rabid Obamaesque Democrats.

I don't like the "take the guns first" given the way it is as a broad statement. IF he means the person has shown himself to be a danger to themselves or the public, has already been adjudicated as unstable etc then yes, o ahead. But shooting off one's mouth with nothing else to back it up steps over the line.

You know how I feel already about raising the age limit.

And don't even try the "weapon of war" "assault rifle" nonsense. You and I both know the ruse here.

Stronger background checks I agree with.

And yeah, I know he starts far to one side to work toward the middle. And this may have been as much for the media as for real. Especially since a great number of these would never pass, especially in an election year. The Dems know what it is like when the NRA is against you. The Republicans know they don't want to find out.

But when you are dealing with The Second (or any other -- get the guns first tramples dangerously close to the 4th) Amendment and the rights of 100,000,000 American Citizens it might be better to tone down the rhetoric and stand your ground (see what I did there :-) where necessary.

We'll see.

And btw TLEP, don't worry about the Pasto/MR mixup. Brothers of different mothers with nearly family origin roots (crazy story about how we found that out).

We even forget ourselves which is which and who is who ;-)

Deputy Scot Peterson and Sheriff Israel wouldn't face live fire when children were at risk, they're not likely to find their spine to go knocking on doors to take innocent law abiding civilian's weapons either.

The second link in the body of the blog post is worrisome.

If something like this had come from Obama, we'd all be screeching.

midnight rider said...

Yes we certainly would have.

But then again he had a longer history of abuses and usurpations.
