Congress Probes Whether Obama DOJ Used The ‘Trump Dossier’ Before Surveillance Court

Both the House and the Senate are investigating whether the former President Barack Obama’s administration used intelligence in a salacious “Trump Dossier” as “evidence” before a secret federal surveillance court to obtain permission to spy on Donald Trump campaign aides and later his transition team.
Leaders in Congress are trying to find out if the Obama Justice Department and the FBI introduced the totally unsubstantiated material alleging unsavory connections between Trump and Russia before the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Court, congressional aides told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The FBI used the dossier to secure permission to monitor the communications of Trump associate Carter Page, based on U.S. officials briefed on the Russia investigation, CNN reported in April.
The latest inquiries began Oct. 4, when the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence subpoenaed Fusion GPS, a political opposition research firm based in Washington, D.C., to appear before the committee and turn over bank documents. The committee is also seeking all Justice Department applications before the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Court, also called the FISA court, to determine if any of the applicants rely on information from the dossier.
Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, asked FBI Director Christopher Wray Oct. 4 if the FBI may have improperly presented any of the dossier information to the FISA court.
The presentation of evidence before the special surveillance court would have been FBI-generated documents delivered by Obama Justice Department attorneys, according to a congressional source familiar with evidence requirements before the court. At the time, FBI Director James Comey presided over the bureau and Attorney General Loretta Lynch oversaw the Justice Department.
Fusion GPS was the company behind the unsubstantiated dossier, and it was authored by Christopher Steele, a former British MI6 agent. Steele’s London-based company, Orbis Business Intelligence, compiled largely uncorroborated — and degrading — information on then-candidate Trump.
BuzzFeed published the dossier Jan. 10, despite a note at the top of the article noting “the allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors.” Six major news outlets possessed the dossier for six months, but none released it, according to Grassley’s Oct. 4 letter to the FBI.
House Democrats and Fusion GPS have denounced the House committee’s subpoena on procedural grounds because GOP Rep. Devin Nunes of California, the committee’s chairman, issued the subpoena. Nunes stepped aside from the committee on the Russia inquiry but claims he retained all other chairmanship responsibilities, he stated last April.
Attorneys for the firm refused to honor the subpoenas On Oct. 16, informing the committee in a 17-page letter that Fusion GPS executives would invoke their “constitutional privileges” and refuse to testify or turn over any documents.
Two Fusion GPS executives refused to answer every question posed by the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday. GPS Executives Peter Fritsch and Thomas Catan invoked Fifth Amendment privileges from being compelled to give self-incriminating testimony, according to a committee source. Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson will also be brought before the committee over the next few weeks.
The procedural battle goes on, but the Democrats have refused to address the underlying grounds for the committee’s subpoena of documents and interviews.
“[House] Republicans want to know whether intelligence agencies used any information from the Christopher Steele dossier, especially for FISA warrants,” a congressional official with knowledge of the investigation told TheDCNF.
The FISA court was established by Congress in 1978 under the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act. A FISA court judge must accept a formal application from the Justice Department to approve a “warrant” for electronic surveillance, physical search, and other forms of investigative actions for foreign intelligence purposes.
If the unsubstantiated dossier information was entered as verifiable information before a FISA court, the implications are “staggering,” former U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova told TheDCNF.
That would mean the Obama administration pursued “a type of manipulation of intelligence data and false intelligence data to mislead a court,” diGenova said. “It’s staggering in terms of its implications.”
The possibility the Obama administration might use the unproven allegations before a FISA court “constitutes a crime of unbelievable dimensions,” he said, adding: “It requires the empanelment of a federal grand jury.”
Grassley added a new twist to the “Steele” dossier, noting in his letter to Wray it appeared the former British agent also gave his same set of allegations to his compatriots in British intelligence. United Kingdom court legal proceedings appended to Grassley’s letter show Steele on Dec. 13, 2016 gave the same dossier to a “senior UK government national security official.”
British intelligence could have shared Steele’s allegations with the U.S. through intelligence sharing, Grassley pointed out. If the U.S. had assumed the British report and the Steele dossier were separate investigations, it could have made Justice Department arguments for wiretaps stronger. In effect, a separate British report could convince a FISA court an allied foreign intelligence agency had independently confirmed the FBI’s allegations when in fact they originated from the same document.
“Mr. Steele’s dossier allegations might appear to be ‘confirmed’ by foreign intelligence, rather than just an echo of the same ‘research’ that Fusion bought from Steele and that the FBI reportedly also attempted to buy from Steele,” Grassley stated in his letter.
“If this in fact happened, it would be alarming,” Grassley wrote to Wray.
A congressional official familiar with the investigative requirements before the FISA court told TheDCNF, the Steele allegations “could have been presented to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court as a piece in a broader package of evidence that would be used to obtain a FISA warrant.”
“There are all kinds of questions about the reliability of the (Steele) evidence and how it was used as a predicate to any of these investigations,” he told TheDCNF.
The Senate Judiciary inquiry is also questioning ethical decisions demonstrated by former director James Comey when the bureau reportedly sought to pay Steele for his services, according to The Washington Post.The FBI abandoned the Steele deal after his dossier came under fire from Congress, the media, from Trump and his allies, according to the Washington Post.
Grassley has written three letters to the FBI seeking details about the bureau’s relationship with Steele and the bureau’s use of the dossier’s allegations before a FISA Court. The bureau has yet to respond to any of his letters.

Trump rips Clinton link to Fusion GPS dossier as a 'disgrace,' says Russia 'hoax is turned around'

President Trump, in a wide-ranging sparring session with reporters Wednesday afternoon, blasted Hillary Clinton over new revelations her campaign helped fund a salacious anti-Trump dossier last year – calling the project a “disgrace” and claiming the tables have turned on Democrats over the “Russia hoax.”

In the midst of a court case that threatened to reveal the dossier’s funding, it emerged Tuesday night that political consulting firm Fusion GPS was retained last year by Marc E. Elias, an attorney representing the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign. The firm then hired former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to write the dossier that contained unverified and lurid allegations about Trump and his team’s ties to Moscow.

The Washington Post first reported on the connections, which were confirmed by Fox News.
Trump, though, repeatedly said Wednesday that this information only came out because the court case would have revealed it. Amid a series of Russia-related controversies that have Democrats – at least for now – on defense, Trump suggested the allegations of Russia collusion with his campaign have boomeranged and are hurting Democrats.
“The whole Russia thing … this was the Democrats coming up with an excuse for losing the election,” Trump told reporters. “They lost it and they lost it very badly. And they didn’t know what to say, so they made up the whole Russia hoax.”

Grassley calls for special counsel on Uranium One sale

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is calling on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Uranium One deal that gave a Russian-owned company partial control of U.S. atomic energy resources in 2010.
"Whoever in DOJ is capable [with] authority to appoint a special counsel [should] do so to investigate Uranium One 'whoever' means if [you] aren't recused," Grassley tweeted Tuesday night.

The FBI already has one special counsel — former FBI Director Robert Mueller is leading the investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The Senate Judiciary Committee announced last week that it was opening an inquiry into the Uranium One sale.

The House Oversight and Intelligence panels on Tuesday also announced a joint investigation that will look into how the Justice Department handled the deal, which sold more than 20 percent of the U.S. uranium supply to the Russian nuclear giant Rosatom.

he congressional committee interest in the matter comes after The Hill reported Sunday that the FBI had been leading a criminal investigation into allegations that the Russians used racketeering and other corrupt schemes to influence the American nuclear industry during the time the uranium deal was in the process of being approved.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said the panel has “been looking into this for a while now,” but the report ultimately convinced them to open a formal inquiry.

"One of the things that you know we're concerned about is whether or not there was an FBI investigation," Nunes said. "Was there a DOJ investigation? If so, why was Congress not informed of this matter?"

The sale of the Canadian mining company to Russia's Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom, required the approval of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which includes representatives from several federal agencies, including the State Department.

At the time, Hillary Clintonwas secretary of State.

Clinton on Monday called the new interest in the uranium deal “baloney” in a C-SPAN interview, suggesting President Trump and his administration are trying to distract from the ongoing Russia probe.

The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the intensifying investigations into the Trump campaign’s possible connections to Russia.

The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about Donald Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.
Marc Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington, D.C., firm, to conduct the research. Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community.
Elias and his law firm, Seattle-based Perkins Coie, retained the firm in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Before that agreement, Fusion GPS’ research into Trump was funded by a still unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.
The Clinton campaign and the DNC, through the law firm, continued to fund Fusion GPS’ research through the end of October 2016, days before Election Day.
Fusion GPS gave Steele’s reports and other research documents to Elias, the people familiar with the matter said. It is unclear how or how much of that information was shared with the campaign and DNC, and who in those organizations was aware of the roles of Fusion GPS and Steele.
The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the investigations into the Trump campaign’s possible connections to Russia.
Trump tweeted as recently as Saturday that the Justice Department and FBI should “immediately release who paid for it.”

Steele previously worked in Russia for British intelligence. The dossier is a compilation of reports he prepared for Fusion. The dossier alleged the Russian government collected compromising information about Trump and the Kremlin was engaged in an active effort to assist his campaign for president.

U.S. intelligence agencies later released a public assessment, which asserted that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to aid Trump. The FBI has been investigating whether any Trump associates helped the Russians.
Trump has adamantly denied the allegations and has dismissed the FBI probe as a witch hunt.

Fusion GPS’ work researching Trump began during the Republican presidential primaries when the GOP donor paid for the firm to investigate.

After the election, the FBI agreed to pay Steele to continue gathering intelligence, but the bureau pulled out of the arrangement after Steele was publicly identified.
The dossier was published by BuzzFeed News in January. Fusion GPS has said it did not give BuzzFeed the document. Officials have said the FBI has confirmed some of the information in the dossier. Other details have yet to be verified and may never be.

The Manipulative Feminism of Megyn Kelly

“It is incomprehensible,” Bill O’Reilly says of Megyn Kelly’s attack on him this week. No, it is entirely comprehensible, given that her show, aimed largely at liberal women, is tanking. By playing the feminist card again and pandering to her audience, she hopes to revive her flagging show.

But it won’t work.

Her tremulously delivered, overly dramatic monologue about O’Reilly — “his suggestion that no one complained about his behavior is false; I know, because I complained” — was typically manipulative, misleading, and narcissistic.

The “behavior” to which she so darkly referred didn’t include sexual harassment at all. It referred to his appearance on a television show during which he declined to answer any questions about her memoirs. He begged off, saying that he had no “interest” in badmouthing his employer.

That didn’t sit well with Kelly, who felt that he should have praised her book and its trashing of Roger Ailes. Seeing a chance to throw her weight around during contract renegotiations, she then fired off a letter of complaint to Fox News executives. Kelly recounted all of this self-centered back-and-forth with deep sighs, as if she had suffered an enormous, traumatizing wrong.

Of course, she had to present what amounts to nothing more than trivial personal pique in grand feminist terms, with all the usual blather about the “message” O’Reilly’s “behavior” sent.

In response to Kelly’s monologue, O’Reilly’s lawyer released a fawning note Kelly once wrote O’Reilly after he promoted her husband’s book on his show. The note captures what a two-faced phony Kelly can be:

“Thanks for the play on Doug’s book. I realize you didn’t have to do that, especially after mentioning it already. I appreciate how supportive you have been over the years here @FNC. You are a true friend + mentor.”

Kelly’s attempt to put herself in the middle of the “discussion about sexual harassment” only undercuts its seriousness, reducing it to bickering among overpaid, egotistical celebrities. Lost in all the ponderous talk about the need for “systemic change” is the glaring irony that figures such as Megyn Kelly gained, not lost, jobs from that system. Were that system abolished, Megyn Kelly wouldn’t have a career.

... the Washington Post article claims the 2016 presidential campaign of Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee paid for the Fusion GPS dossier alleging Russian ties with the presidential campaign of Republican Donald Trump and sordid phony personal smears of Trump.

The Post reported that Clinton campaign and DNC lawyer Marc Elias and his law firm Perkins Coie paid Fusion GPS to continue researching Trump after a Republican donor who originally funded the research pulled out in April 2016.

The DNC released an awkward statement following WaPo’s bombshell report claiming the DNC was involved in the funding of the debunked dossier. In true Democrat fashion, the DNC split hairs by saying:

Tom Perez and the new leadership of the DNC were not involved in any decision-making regarding Fusion GPS, nor were they aware that Perkins Coie was working with the organization. But let’s be clear, there is a serious federal investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and the American public deserves to know what happened.”

Obama Appointed Islamic Society Official To Approve Russian Uranium Sale and Gulftainer Port Deal

The Obama administration placed Aimen Nabi Mir, former two-time president of the youth wing of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), into the top advisory position to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a national security post at the Treasury Department.

Aimen Mir was the CFIUS Staff Chairperson from 2009 until 2014. During that time, Aimen Mir played a key role in the CFIUS panel’s decision to approve the sale of Uranium One to Russia’s Rosatom. Mir also played a key role in the Treasury Department’s refusal to investigate the UAE’s Gulftainer 35-year cargo container terminal lease at Port Canaveral, a critical military infrastructure facility for U.S. naval and space operations. Both decisions severely damaged United States national security.

Aimen Mir helped set the table for Vladimir Putin to seize control of over 20 percent of U.S. uranium and was part of the decision that awarded control of Port Canaveral’s cargo container terminal to Saddam Hussein’s rogue nuclear weapons scientist and designated Iraq War enemy combatant, Dr. Jafar Dhia Jafar. Dr. Jafar’s brother and business partner, Gulftainer co-owner Hamid Jafar, was under investigation by the Treasury Department and four congressional committees for his ‘Oil For Superweapons” scheme in concert with Saddam Hussein.

For starters, Aimen Mir’s ISNA connections are troubling. ISNA is one of the largest Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the U.S. and was named by the Department of Justice as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation HAMAS terror funding trial.

Further, Aimen Mir is the son of Kashmir-born physician Dr. Ghulam Nabi Mir, an ISNA Founders Committee member. Dr. Mir is also the president of the World Kashmir Awareness Forum (WKAF), an Islamic platform Dr. Mir uses to aggressively advocate for Kashmir’s secession from India in order to join Pakistan.

WKAF’s Secretary General “Dr.” Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, is a convicted felon, also from Kashmir, who served as a Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) operativeinside the United States.

Fai was arrested by the FBI in 2011 for covertly operating as an unregistered foreign agent while receiving $3.5 million dollars in wire transfers from the ISI. Fai used some of that money to fund an elaborate lobbying operation pushing Kashmiri “independence” on unsuspecting U.S. officials who remained seemingly unaware that Pakistan was running the operation. In 2013, Fai was granted early release from U.S. federal prison by the Justice Department.

Like his father’s ISI partner Fai, Aimen Mir appears to have been running his own operation at CFIUS.

American parties now have driven the dialogue in the USA to such polarized visioning of evil of the other side and/or are so willing to sustain their corruptions that they BOTH have seen fit to involve FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE in the election process of the USA in order to defeat the other side (which is especially amazing since those in power are really one party which wants somewhat more riches/power for its lobe of that party)

The Trump campaign brooks a visit from a Russian lawyer, along with a former intelligence agent to ‘discuss’ potentially valuable oppo research, and is actually euchred into this meeting. Gee, I wonder if Vlad knew about all this and was wondering how the hell we managed what we did from 1945-1989.

The Clinton campaign hires a security firm, GPS Fusion, which uses Russian intelligence to spread rumors about Trump which is then collected (by them) and goes back to the campaign which sees it filtered to John McCain whose (understandable) burning hate for Trump sees that it goes to the FBI, which the Obama admin then uses as the basis for a counterintelligence investigation of Trump.

This the political equivalent of a plan to win the world series by walking three times via taking every pitch, and have the 4th batter hit a grand slam. For this to be successful the pitcher and opposition managers HAVE TO SUCK.

THEY DO.

We are in the midst of a long term, excellent destabilization attack by foreign powers. This includes NOT JUST our parties, but surreptitious and open support for groups like ANTIFA and the far right, and co-opting of (SOME?) of the media, not by it’s leaning, but by pushing both ends. YOU CAN BE SURE OF THIS. Just a few good shoves, you see. Human weakness to take care of the rest.

The hardest part of this is that at the upper levels of those institutions which would PROTECT the people are those partisans who AIDED the enemies of the people of the USA (knowingly or not, and note that this looks like, among others, John McCain, Trump Campaign, the FBI and the DNC) in order to keep power for those in power, whether that be a party, or the INSTITUTIONS’ growth and power. And if the parties had been the other way around during 2016, the Republicans would more than likely be just as guilty.

It’s time for some folks who think the exacerbated extremes of this destabilization are insane to get together, and ensure this ends. Whether that means Joe Manchin and Susan Collins, or the death of our parties, or a REVOLT at some of the structures here, I don’t care.

To me, the actions of the elections campaigns involving foreign powers in order to win election represents a watershed moment now.

Mueller examining the blades of grass in a poisoned lawn looks absurd to me at this point.

SOME ADULT has to tell Putin and Xi they are playing with the end of the world on this issue. I don’t see anyone qualified to do this in either party today.

And it fills me with disgust.
