Israeli government disavowes air strike plan against Iran

Well, the imprudence of Olmert's government does not appear to have a limit. After the rumors of a plan for an israeli air strike against Iran with tactical nuclear weapons, for the inhabilitation of the sites believed to be related to the development of Iran's nuclear capability, the only prudent thing to do when asked about the accuracy of those reports would have been to say "the state of Israel does not discuss in public its strategic military plans", or words to that effect.

I think it is absolutely clear even to a 10-year old kid that for deterrence to work, you must never say or imply that you renounce the use of force. I mean, would you place a sign in the front door of your house that said "This home is gun-free and the owners herewith publicly renounce any use of force against trespassers"? If you ever do, don't count on me ever visiting you at home.

Well, that is exactly what Mr. Olmert will not understand, as his government has disavowed the reports of a plan to strike Iran with nukes.

Now, what will he answer should it come the time when there is actually a military plan soon to be undertaken? Will he commit the idiocy of saying "yes, we are now planning to attack Iran next Friday, I think between 6 and 9 pm"?

When are the people of Israel going to awaken and oust this man from power?

Olmert is quite the negotiator, huh?

He couldn't run a telephone sales room, much less a country.

You also have to wonder how strong the support from the White House is gonna be for Olmert when the time comes that the White House may need to stick its neck out !! How far out on a limb is G.W. gonna go to back-up Olmert ??

If the Israelis aint gonna buck-up and get a Leader of the sort as Bebe, then I dont thank it should be very far..

The hard road ahead does not bode well for a country with wishy-washy leadership that depends on NUANCE !!

Time is gettin shorter by the day, and Israel is trudgin along tryin to muster a realiable defense usin the same-ol same-ol Game Plan.. If nothin else happened in the last dust-up with the Hez, it is that that tired ol plan aint gonna cut it the next time..

Its time for em to get their shit-on-the-stick and get somethin done to at least make it LOOK like its gonna be a whole new situation when Hez decides to flex its muscles again.. And I would suggest they drag a formidable General out of the woodworks ,if they can, and post him at the gates with teeth knashin and a growl to get the Hez's attention..

If Israel ever needed Sharon, they need him now, and if they dont have him anymore, then they better get their ass lookin to find another !! I understand that there are several of his Students in the shadows but have more-or-less sidelined.. They better start thankin bout dustin em off and polishin em up and puttin em out front in the spotlite and lettin em get on with the program of developin a strong and organized Defense and Military Structure..

THATS what its gonna take for me to get behind em !!

Olmert, right down to his statements about being 'tired of beating the enemy' IS Israel's Jimmy Carter. One of the things that complete moron did, in the midst fo the cold war, was a demonstration of force in sending a squadron of F15's to KSA as a show of force after Afghanistan was invaded, but in order to avoid a provocation of the mean USSR, he announced they would be unarmed.

This is that.

One more thought....did the USA leak this to thwart the Israelis?

A lot of people seem to feel that someone leaked this story to make the Israelis "look bad"-- i.e. that they are overly warlike and militaristic. Buit-- maybe this was "leaked" by some Israeli source.

Most countries realize that an all out nuclear (or for that matter conventional) war between Iran and Israel is not in their interest. Any use of nukes could contaminate neighbouring countries, and even in a conventional war, oil supplies would be disrupted, causing a huge increaase in prices and economic hardships for most countries.

I believe most countries think Israel won't initiate an attack...or else they just rather avoid thinking about it.

A lot of international politics is political manuevering and posturing. Some Israeli official might have decided that if it started to look like an Israeli attack was about to happen, it might really scare some world powers, and put pressure on major powers to...put real pressure on Iran.

Of course, there are a lot of fallacies here..and I could be wrong...

P.S. Unless I'm mistaken, there haven't been any (factual) articles stating that Israel is actually going to attack Iran-- there's merely evidence that they are preparing for such an attack. Countries do this all the time...in fact, it would be foolish to begin "preparing" for an attack only a day or two before it was necessary. But it is possible to be fully prepared...and then find that it is not necessary or advantageous, and not carry out the attack.
