As the SEPTA subway train rocked forward, a thirty-something guy leaned over near the doorway and gently planted a kiss on the little boy at his side.
When the train neared the Fairmount Avenue stop shortly after midnight on Thursday, the man reached out like an adoring parent and directed the 3- or 4-year-old tyke to an open seat.
Then he flew into a monstrous rage.
Without uttering a word, police said, the unidentified man whipped out a double-claw hammer and began bludgeoning a 20-year-old man who was dozing off in his seat.
For five long minutes, SEPTA surveillance cameras captured the deranged attacker - who was still on the loose late last night- digging his hammer into the man's head and neck.
Through it all, disgusted investigators said, at least 10 passengers stood by and did nothing as the random attack moved from the train to the platform, when the hammer-wielding maniac tried to push his victim down onto the train tracks.
When the beating was finished and the suspect fled with the little boy, the victim staggered back onto the train, bloodied, confused and alone, said Detective Kenneth Roach, of Central Detectives.
And even then, no one tried to help him.
"Somebody should have helped this guy," Roach said. "I understand the [other] guy had a hammer, but they outnumbered him at least 10 to one."
Miraculously, the victim took the subway up to Temple University Hospital, received several staples and sutures and was discharged, Roach said.
The motive remains a mystery.
"I'm baffled," Roach said. "He had no reason to do that. It was unprovoked. The victim was just going home from work, minding his own business, listening to his iPod."
Roach said that the victim, whose name was not released, boarded the subway at City Hall.
The attacker - a bearded, stocky, 5-foot-9-inch black man who wore a yellow shirt and black pants - also got on at City Hall, with a youngster who may or may not be his child.
The victim and the hammer-toting psychopath never exchanged a word or a glance, Roach said.
"According to the victim, there was no contact or verbal discussion," he said. "They didn't even notice each other."
The hammer was hidden in a black-and-yellow book bag that the attacker clutched throughout the short subway ride.
The little boy dashed off the train with the other passengers during the brutal beat-down, but was later seen running back on to recover the book bag. The boy and the suspect are seen on camera leaving together.

Sudden Jihad Syndrome or just nuts? What's the difference? The point is the lack of chivalry while riders cowered or "didn't get involved." The West gets what it deserves if Christian men won't practice their age-old virtues.
2 or 3 of these with the perp smashed to a pulp would deter any more.
The mere fact of these as surprise attacks are INTENDED to shock into inaction anyone around.
It is NO COINCIDENCE hammer attacks suddenly spring up around the west, all executed by certain others. The comment thread at Jihadwatch is revelatory.

Is it jihad? Of course, it wasn't a robbery. . .20 year old victim, Dewayne Taylor actually walked back on the train after the assault and retrieved his i-pod. A single female passenger picked it up and returned it to him. Not one of the passengers on the platform or the train assisted this obviously bleeding and dazed kid. Dare he expect more from citizens of the City of Brotherly Love?
Not one of the passengers could be bothered to pull out their cell phone and call 911 - not during the attack, and obviously not even after the attack on 9/4 @ 12/:15 a.m. According to the video report, no-one reported the incident until 6-8 hours after the incident occurred and they have NO WITNESSES. It was the victim himself who reported the incident when he got home. The reason for the delay, according to this report, Dewayne was escorted by a female passenger from Erie Avenue to Temple University Hospital emergency services where he received necessary treatment.

The attacker is standing in front of the automatic entry/exit doors, grasping a safety bar. He is with a five year old boy who is also standing up and leaning against a metal panel which also serves as the side to passenger seating on the other side. On that seat sits a fairly large, balding or tightly cropped black male wearing a light polo shirt and sneakers. The seated passenger is a good 30-50 lbs. bigger than the attacker.
During the first few seconds of this video, the attacker leans over to the child and appears to give the child instructions. The passenger seated closest to these two appears to be somewhat uncomfortable as he intentionally overhears the conversation between the child and soon-to-act attacker. At the 19 sec mark, the seated passenger looks around to see if there is anyone who is aware or possibly looks for emergency cord/phone and wipes his forehead. Clearly he is uncomfortable. At the 47 sec mark, as the attacker begins to move, the seated passenger adjusts himself in his seat and appears to brace himself with his right arm and hand grabbing the corner of the seat, while his left hand grabs the seat between his legs. The female passenger on the next seat appears to be unaware at this point. The bearded attacker is now standing and guiding the five year old boy holding a plastic shopping bag (note: the plastic bag remains on the seat after the attack & the passengers have left the area). The seated passenger sees the little boy, loosens up and moves over to permit the child to sit down and he relaxes.
At this point the ABC editors focus in on the attacker removing the hammer from his backpack (thank God it wasn't a claw hammer) as he immediately begins hammering away at the twenty year old passenger who, totally oblivious while dozing and listening to his ipod, awoke to this horrific nightmare. As the assault began, the attacker clearly grasped the safety pole tightly with his left hand to balance himself as he repeatedly swung the hammer with full body force behind his left arm. The bloody assault is said to have gone on for over five minutes as the assailant drags the twenty year old off the train and continues the assault on the platform. One individual wearing a red cap is visible cowering away at the 1:00 mark. A young black male adult wearing a white t-shirt is also seen leaving to the left at 1:04.
During the tail end of the assault on the Broad Street line at Broad and Fairmont (northbound), several male witnesses are visible standing near the train's open door. One graying female's head (w/pony tail) is visible inside the train. One heavy set black male with a striped polo shirt. One average weight 20ish male wearing a red shirt with a contrasting dark collar, Another light skinned black man with mustache and sideburns wearing a green shirt and hat. Facing these 'men' is another bearded black male wearing a baseball cap turned backwards cover in a dark shirt and carrying a drawstring bag (teal)like a backpack. There is another average weight white bearded male with mustache and dark hair and blue & white baseball cap wearing a light brown t-shirt. Another light skinned male with beard and mustache, brown hair covered with a dark baseball hat backwards and is wearing a green oversized t-shirt. This male appears to be over 30 and has substantial tatoos visible on his left fore arm. Another tall black male, of average weight wearing a white t-shirt and gold chain on his neck, black baseball cap on his head is carrying a bag onto the train .

On second video the big brave fella seated with the child is visible during the attack. Watch his expression - he expected something - and grabbed his stuff and got up and walked in the opposite direction, leaving the child. The child witnesses the attack and also leaves, leaving behind his shopping bag visible on the adjacent seat.
The attacker, alternates swings between left and right hands.
These males are considered 'men' in Philadelphia?
