Scientists have unveiled a 47-million-year-old fossilised skeleton of a monkey hailed as the missing link in human evolution.
This 95%-complete 'lemur monkey' is described as the "eighth wonder of the world"
The search for a direct connection between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom has taken 200 years - but it was presented to the world today at a special news conference in New York.
The discovery of the 95%-complete 'lemur monkey' - dubbed Ida - is described by experts as the "eighth wonder of the world".
They say its impact on the world of palaeontology will be "somewhat like an asteroid falling down to Earth".
Researchers say proof of this transitional species finally confirms Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and the then radical, outlandish ideas he came up with during his time aboard the Beagle.
Sir David Attenborough said Darwin "would have been thrilled" to have seen the fossil - and says it tells us who we are andwhere we came from.
"This little creature is going to show us our connection with the rest of the mammals," he said.
"This is the one that connects us directly with them.
"Now people can say 'okay we are primates, show us the link'.
"The link they would have said up to now is missing - well it's no longer missing."
So, the link is no longer missing. But, does anyone know what ever happened to Charles Johnson?

Pastorius,
Charles Johnson? Isn't he the guy from little green footballs who's been smearing anti Jihadist bloggers.
Yeah, he also spends a lot of time on the subject of Evolution.
And, his mascot is a lizard.
Doesn't that skeleton look an awful lot like a lizard to you, Damien?
It's missing the cocktail with the stupid little umbrella :)
I thought of Charles when I saw this too. And his ongoing neverending yap yap yap about evolution and intelligent design.
Pastorius,
It looks kind of like it could be a lizard, but its arms and legs are too long. It also bears a slight resemblance to those acidic aliens from the Sigourney Weaver movies.
midnight rider,
Well evolution is an important part of science. Its the unifying theory of all biology.
Damien -- no argument there. I believe in evolution and don't believe it imcompatible with God creating the universe.
The humor, if you will, is the inordinate amount of time Johnson spends slapping about the proponents of intelligent design. Nearly as much as he spends slapping around Atlas and Spencer for their beliefs. And they slapping back.
He and Atlas need to be careful, I think. They are both in danger of becoming irrelevant and characitures of themselves.
But what the heck do I know? I spend my days cussing at Jihadis through cyber space and nights posting bawdy pics of girls with guns. And all the while listening to some really good music.
Damien,
I don't think you'd get much argument from MR or I as to the validity of the theory of Evolution. However, that doesn't mean that we wouldn't make fun of Charles for his obsession with the topic.
I think you had to have been there.
One of the funniest things about Charles is that he doesn't understand the distinction between the "Prescriptive" and "Descriptive". He has a hard time understanding that if someone rejects Scientism, that is not the same thing as rejecting Science.
I have used the Prescriptive vs. Descriptive distinction in comments to him, and watched as he flew right by my words.
Dude can be very rude, as well as illogical/unreasoning.
just to let you know, if any of you have the time, The History Channel is airing a documentary on this find on may 25, called The Link
Pam has posted some really disturbing stuff lately. But it is the stuff that is happening in the ME, and it is Islam as understood, practiced and enforced.
So I don't think she is in danger of becoming irrelevant, MR.
She may be shunned as the conduit for transmitting such disturbing information (particularly the latest videos - they are too upsetting for me to watch much of them), but it is what it is.
As a fellow said to me today about a totally unrelated issue - facts can be inconvenient things.
CJ? I never knew much about him, but when I go to that site I am perplexed as to what the point is.
Pam does a better job of monitoring Israel and the state of affairs in the ME.
Drudge does a much better job of "aggregating" the news, I think.
And IBA does a much better job with eclectic "defenders of Western Civ" articles and opinion.
And Jihad Watch does a better job, of, well, watching the jihad.
Dunno what CJ is trying to be or do.
"Anti-creationist," I guess. Uh, ok.
Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer should simply just ignore Charles Johnson's accusations and insults. They look unprofessional and childish by stooping to his level. I want to read about what the mainstream media flat-out refuses to report in regard to Islam, its draconian culture, and its immense threat to our Judeo-Christian way of life; not some idiotic spat between educated adults exhibiting the demeanor of children. I think Robert has handled this a bit better than Pamela.
Total, largely I agree with you, but on a number of occassions Gellar has fired the first shot. And that's no defense of Charles. He's just as bad.
I would agree Spencer, unless he is attacked, tries to stay out of it.
Their mutual hate is more than distraction, it is a VORTEX, especially for Spencer who feels compelled to respond to each stupid waste of breath from the other side.
It's a lizardoid which died trolling belgian swamps
Epa's comment made me spew my drink. Good thing I had napkins nearby. . .
Ro
I dunno, I've dates some guys that were very lizardy. Perhaps evolution working the other way?
Sorry to hear that, Ellen K.
Hey MR, maybe we should set up an Infidel dating service here at IBA.
:)
Pastorius
Trouble is, how would you keep Jihadist and Lizards from posing as Infidels?
- :)
Anon at 9:10 p.m. -- when I mean irrelevant I mean (1) this stupid war that has erupted between her and CJ and (2) this obsession that Obama is some sort of evil anti-Christ Manchurian candidate.
When she sets to shrieking about either it distracts badly from what she does very very well, as you enumerated.
Understand, I was once a very big fan of Atlas. But the last year or so it has, to me, gotten worse with her. And personally, I don't mind the pictures and videos. The world NEEDS to see those. To remind them of where the real fight lay.
I just wish she stay on the message she is very good at. (eesh that's lousy syntax)
Oasto -- YES YES YES YES YES! Send resume and photos to me! And I will forward to Pasto for approval and Damien to help weed out the Jihadis.
And, you know, just don't be surprised if they end up in a gun post somewhere.
Or a whole new IBA matchmakers section!
I think that Robert Spencer feels the need to respond to the attacks so that he's not discredited. LGF is, after all, sometimes mentioned in the mainstream media.
Spencer's works will be discredited as sources for research if he lets the accusations go answered. I have a post grad student doing research on Islam, and certain sources are disallowed by the professor because they are white supremacist in nature. As far as I know, Spencer hasn't been yet discredited in such a manner. Other have been -- so my student has told me.
Always on Watch,
I'd love to know which writers are considered to be verboten for your grad student friend. Do you think you could get a list?
