FCC Wants to Test the “Public Value” of Every Broadcast Station
From Weasel Zippers:
(CNSNews.com) – American journalism is in “grave peril,” FCC Commissioner Michael Copps says, and to bolster “traditional media,” he said the Federal Communications Commission should conduct a “public value test” of every commercial broadcast station at relicensing time.
In a speech at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York on Thursday, Copps also said station relicensing should happen every four years instead of the current eight.
“If a station passes the Public Value Test, it of course keeps the license it has earned to use the people’s airwaves,” Copps said. “If not, it goes on probation for a year, renewable for an additional year if it demonstrates measurable progress. If the station fails again, give the license to someone who will use it to serve the public interest.”
Ever since Barack Obama became president, prominent conservatives have warned about liberal efforts to squelch conservative and Christian talk-radio.

I just love how the commies use the term 'people' as in 'Peoples Republic of China'
At a real school of journalism the schmuck would have been booed off the stage.
Imagine the reactions of people like Franklin, Washington, or Madison to such bullshit!
The 'airwaves' are only licensed to keep stations from stomping on each other's signal. The gov't doesn't own the air, it just regulates frequencies so you can actually listen to what you want.
So when Rush goes offshore on short wave are they going to jam the signal like the commies used to do w/Radio Free Europe?
Bunch of commie bastards.
To exercise tyranny over the people, the government must control the media.
Another "friend of The People", Al Sharpton, is claiming that all conservative/libertarian/right-wing in general discussion is "hate speech" and that talk radio should therefore be banned.
Sharpton should have been tried for manslaughter after the Freddie's Fashion Mart debacle in 1995. His vicious racist rants are the genuine article when it comes to "hate speech", and his rabble-rousing contributed to the deaths of 8 people in the fire at that Jewish-owned shop he was leading a "protest" against.
