All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.

My wife tells me her father used to sing these to her often
I think you need to put it in context of time place and experience for people then. It is not likely they knew/understood Communism and Stalinism as we do now with the light of 70 years history to look on. They saw a United States in deep trouble and nothing seeming to help. At least Guthrie and Stenbeck did, maybe not Hemingway. he was just fucked up (I never liked his writing much. Tried to read For Whom The Bell Tolls and I got the impression all he was doing was whining about his situation.) I suspect today they would be supporters of an Obamaesque character, not a Stalin.
Just my impression of it and the period. Same reason people looked on folks like Dillinger and PrettyBoy Floyd and Bonnie and Clyde as heroes.
Doesn't mean I agree with them. Just love his music.
Great music, MR. Waited till I got mom to bed so I could enjoy it.
Your words above are kind and wise. I did not know his politics. So you guys made me read about him tonight. Interesting the stuff about his Jewish songs because of his third wife, Marjorie and her Yiddish poet mother and Bob Dylan visiting him! Then I got to wondering about the difference between Huntington's and Parkinson's. What an education I'm getting here at IBA!
But that music is so pure, so Americana. I remember when I was a little girl and you couldn't buy Halloween costumes at the local bigstoreMart, we all dressed as Hobos. I feel a connection to that America, but doubt my daughters do?
Okay, another day is done! Goodnight all! God bless America!
Wow. Beautiful RT. This must have been one of his early songs when he was still enunciating his words:) So beautiful I listened to it twice! And you do hear Woody in his songs, not just this one.
I'm leaving tomorrow, but I could leave today:)
My father used to ask me "Honey, what times the 4 o'clock bus leave?" And I'd say: 3:60!

Yeah, I know. So were Steinbeck and Hemingway.

I love Dylan.
Thanks for that, RT.
