Obama rules out new F-16s for Taiwan

“All we’ve been told is the president has made a decision, and I assume it will be for the F-16 A/B upgrade package,” said a senior congressional aide close to the issue.

The president decided against selling Taiwan 66 new advanced F-16 C/D model aircraft, despite several requests from Taipei and Congress, the officials said.

The F-16 A/B is a product of 1970’s design. It will be going up against THESE:

The SU-35 … a generation 4.5 fighter created by the Soviet Union and Russia to defend and defeat against the F-15E Strike Fighter

The Chinese Stealth Fighter a surprise development based on cyber theft from the F-22 and F-35

The J-10, a Chinese manufactured copy of the Israeli Lavi, designed to outperform and defeat F-16 generation USSR and Russia produced aircraft

And all this against the IL-76 AEW aircraft the Chinese fly which guides the much larger number of fighters against the venerable F-16.

I am reminded of American flyers and Australians trying to defend against the Mitsubishi Type Zero in 1942 in the Brewster Buffalo.
