What SHOULD the role of the IRS be in regulating non profits?

Almost nothing.
The IRS should ONLY take founding paperwork which asserts no profit will be held for distribution to officers and workers.
Any other involvement WILL abridge freedoms outlined in the Bill of Rights. SOONER OR LATER. By one party or the other.

WHY?

BECAUSE THEY CAN.

BECAUSE IT’S HUMAN NATURE

We now find ONCE AGAIN, that with every further involvement in regulation  most human power grabs occur, sycophantic careerist behavior occurs, resentment behavior and abuse occur, in short every single EXPECTED behavior the Constitution was written to forbid and limit.
We have a system designed to use the human weaknesses around ambition and desire for power and money against others such desires in other branches of govt, and other political suasion to ensure that the personal freedoms of those of us not interested in all the minutiae of this process retain our own freedoms.
The size, scope and intrusiveness of this govt today make this almost impossible.
The personal stories of of those people who tried to found non profits to use their voice and organizing aptitudes to advance a cause they cared about are chilling not for their impact, but because the govt, the IRS, simply acts in a manner they think correct, with casual power to destroy american freedoms and personal lives.
Normal, everyday folks, visited by the IRS 17 times?
Audits of personal taxes of OTHER DONORS?
Lists of potential donors?

Questioning of LOYALTIES?

Questioning of what they pray for?
Prediction of future activities (speech) taken to limit the organizations’s scope?
Visits by the FBI?
THE FBI?
Letters from :
Max Baucus
Carl Levin
Charles E. Schumer
Michael Bennet
Sheldon Whitehouse
Jeff Merkley
Tom Udall
Jeanne Shaheen
Al Franken
urging the IRS to do precisely what they did? Threatening legislation if they did NOT do what they did?
Jeanne Shaheen?  That is a criterion of how far gone the republic is.
This is the worst conceivable outcome here. The democratic senators writing to IRS were not just doing this administration’s DIRTY WORK they proved as Senators, they BELIEVED their own rhetoric that Tea Party type people were right wing extremists, who were a danger, and a danger which needed to be REPRESSED thru the govt power to ruin the personal, and financial life of such Americans …FOR EXERCIZING THE 1st AMENDMENT.

Repressed in America.

IN AMERICA.
This is not just a scandal, this is proof the founders warnings about govt power is true to every extent in every age. If the govt is granted power, it will USE IT sooner or later to our detriment.
In our personal lives.
Our govt as it has become today - if it does not like your speech, your style, your inclinations, accepts the mantle of action to RUIN YOUR LIFE for that, and only that reason, should you raise your voice.
Power is it’s own vice.
Party is irrelevant.
We need major reformation, not a few rules trying to bend behavior by regulating regulators.
The REALLY bad news, is that this is just ONE of three major scandals facing these people who can manage NOTHING except public perception of them.

WOW, and amen right on ..

"The city code books aren't thick because politicians like to write new laws and regulations. The codes are thick because when government swings them at a citizen, they hurt."

The purpose of the law is NOT to protect the people, but for the govt to CONTROL, ABUSE AND THREATEN.

WHY?

TO
MAINTAIN
POWER

The Obama admin is a threat to the republic

Epa,
Honestly, I'm not sure that what Obama has done to our republic can be undone (fixed).

Has Chicago ever really reformed?

"Has Chicago ever really reformed?"
Who was the last mayor?
Who is mayor now?

I KNOW Jeanne Shaheen from the NH days (we lived in Nashua, then Manch from 76-2006 ..except summer adn were VERY active in the dem party) before she was gov. That she took part in this a MARKER of where we are.

Before 2008 I told my son in law if Obama was who I thought he was, it would 3 generation to fix the damage he would cause IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

Domestically?
Who the hell knows?
The entitlements, the sensation and calling for govt to care for you from birth to death, the debt growth, the demonizing of the opposition as a viable tool of domestic politics?
Who knows how, or when of IF this can be normalized?

Obama is a product of the Chicago machine. He learned how to play the game and he's simply applying The Chicago Way to Washington politics.

The shadowy big money types who created the Obama fiction choose well. They found a candidate who appeared harmless and appealing on the outside but was one who is totally ruthless and willing to do whatever it takes to suppress opposition.

Unfortunately a contractor kickback on Racine does NOT worj out to a larger version with a Solyndra, and a warning to a pain in the ass reporter on the Tribune does not simply scale up to a widespread wiretapping, hacking and surveillance of reporters on both national security issues and coverups at state and the pentagopn and the NSC inside the White House.
Nor does a visit from a permit inspector to a mom and pop general store mean the same thing as a NATIONAL SUSTAINED EFFORT to repress free speech.

The fact is, the opposition to Obama CANNOT AFFORD TO RELENT, OR LET UP.

The Chicago Way in national politics is the end of the Constitution.

Is Obama losing the sycophantic media? <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2013/05/20/AP-Chief-DOJ-Grab-of-Reporter-Phone-Records-UnconstitutionalAP Chief: DOJ Grab of Reporter Phone Records Unconstitutional</a>

Interesting in light of Pfeiffer's buzz word yesterday: "IRRELEVANT."

Thanks, Christine. I didn't properly close the tag on that link.

Too many news stories breaking today!

It's been a heck of a week.

This cascade of "revelations" began about 10 days ago. I've barely been able to get anything done except trying to track the latest development. Sheesh.

"Never let a crisis (or a tragedy) go to waste." The words of CHICAGO Mayor and Obama Pal Rahm Emanuel.

No doubt Obama is planning how to milk the tragedy in Oklahoma.

Expect the scandals to disappear from the news.

Mike's America,
I was just thinking that too. Tomorrow, Obama will insert himself into the middle of the Oklahoma situation, pouring money in which will be used to buy love and enrich his cronies.

Frankly I'm shocked he isn't there right now.
Maybe he can appear there with Jeri Ryan and remind us all of HOW IT'S ALL PLAYED.
