The Persians were already weak because of their constant fighting with the Byzantine Empire. Islam may appear "formidable" but Muslims have always been a bunch of pussy backstabbers.
They would have never stood a chance if infidels had been united. They have always attacked divided peoples (like in the case of Europe, Europeans were only able to defeat Muslims when they came together) or those weakened by much stronger foes (like in the case of Persia-Byzantine).
Even in the beginning, Mohammed managed to divide the Arabs against their neighbors. Like I said, pussies who know how to stab you when you're not looking.
A historical overview would only be complete with the record of Muslim victories and the reasons behind them and also non Muslim victories against Islam (when non Muslims came together). And it didn't take a lot for Muslims to be defeated. You just have to know how to break them.
They believe Allah will give them an easy victory (they've always believed that) and they also believe that if they appear to be losing its because Allah is unhappy (read about Badr and Uhud to understand this mentality).
It is easy to defeat Muslims even if at times it seems impossible. Non Muslims just need to come together in agreement first that Muslims who follow Islam (not some fringe element) are the problem.
