When you go to war, you had better be determined to win, BECAUSE..

The other guy WILL BE.

ISAF confirms Taliban downing of US helicopter in Zabul

It is unclear if the downing of the US Blackhawk in Zabul province, which killed six US soldiers, was caused by RPGS or “if the low-flying aircraft set off a bomb hidden on the ground.” Last year, the Islamic Jihad Union tested an anti-helicopter fragmentation mine with the intent of bringing down an Apache.
Just as Iran was determined in Syria by sending in Hizballah, and when THAT was not enough, the IRGC.
If one is not DETERMINED to be victorious, if your are thinking about what is ‘proportional’, or ‘just’, stay out and ignore. You will either be making matters worse, or creating enemies for no reason. This includes any useless, and self serving ‘negotiations’ which in the end are designed to convince ones self that one is actually committing an act, while the other side knows full well what you are trying to achieve.
So sorry, but why is this STILL not clear?

The ongoing engagement in Afghanistan is designed to wear down the US armed forces and destroy their morale. Pointless deployment and training assignments, death-trap rules of engagement, no end-in-sight exit-strategy, and the continual escalation of PC harassments are purposefully orchestrated to ruin the greatest military in history.

Fighting flag officers are cashiered in favor of butt kissing toadies. Promising junior officers leave in despair. Special forces operators come stateside to be picked up by ATF and big city SWAT teams and repurposed for the coming assault on those American citizens that just don't want to get with the new order.

Remember also that this isn't an Obama administration innovation. Bush I started the war on drugs and Bush II inaugurated the war on terror. Middle America went along for their own "safety and protection." We given away a hell of a lot of our birthright in this progression.
