Robert Gates on Fox News Sunday, just after telling Fox that Russia will NEVER let the Crimea go
Gates was on Charlie Rose this past week stating he doesn't think that Putin is trying to recreate the USSR but just wants the "near abroad" (whatever that means) to be Russian. Neither Gates nor Rose thought Russian imperialism was a particularly bad thing. "What a bunch of Maroons", as Bugs Bunny would say.
