His story and the photo’s is a must read in the Atlantic.
You have almost certainly never seen this shot and there is a reason why.

Frankly,
that picture simply reflects the real NATURE of war, and victory at
that. That picture is the result of what we went there to do. If we as a
people were not prepared to see that, we should have just let Saddam
have his prize.
Seriously. If we think ourselves too civilized to produce that product, fine.
But let’s not kid ourselves either way.
That kind of debate over limited time is beneficial in determining when and if we are ready to do THAT.
As a people.
There is no place to hide from reality.
We went there to do THAT to the other guys.
That is an observation of how it is.
And THEY should recognize that is what WE do.
Causing us, hopefully, to HAVE to do it less.
But either way, we need to be sure there was no other way, and if that test is met, accept the reality of the final product

I feel the same way about meat.
One of the worst things that has happened to us as a society is we have removed ourselves from all violence and death.
When I was a kid, my mother told me how she and her family would cut the heads of chickens. My wife's family did that, and I believe they even literally just ripped the heads off the chickens too, if the axe wasn't too handy.
It's important for us to know where our food comes from and how we get it ready to be meat.
Our freedom, likewise, comes from the violence we are willing to do upon those who would take it away from us.
