“The same troops who used to be in Mali, Chad, French Guyana or the Central African Republic are now ensuring the protection of French people” on their home turf

From The Federalist:
A specter is haunting Europe. The specter of Islam. George W. Bush used to say that we had to fight the terrorists over there, in the Middle East, so we wouldn’t have to fight them here at home.
A long period of relative security made that claim seem overblown, like a lame justification for interventionism. But it just might turn out that he was right, and that it is even more true for Europe than it is for us.
I was reminded of this reading about the curtailed New Year’s Eve celebrations in Paris. About 60,000 police officers and troops were deployed across the country, and revelers said that made them feel safer.
“The same troops who used to be in Mali, Chad, French Guyana or the Central African Republic are now ensuring the protection of French people,” said Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.
GO READ THE WHOLE THING.

Great article, but in my opinion, "... This must now be a national security election,..." though true, missed the point that 2012 WAS the election when this issue should have been front and center. Romney, with whatever problems he might have had, was the candidate well aware of national security. We had had four years of a dilettante president, to put him under the most positive light. The entire country, starting with our wise president, laughed when Romney identified Russia as a danger to the US. Who was right?

And I place the blame of his loss to an important group of Republicans who stayed home and did not vote due to a childish tantrum because THEIR candidate was not the nominee. Should Republicans act again in such a stupid way, there is no doubt the next president will be another Dem, even if she is an indicted criminal, who could not care less about our national security as long as her pockets are well lined (even with money provided by our enemies.)
