A commenter who was watching TV last night mentioned that there was NO FIRE ALARM IN THE BUILDING.
And get a load of this:
Those who fled said that no fire alarm sounded, sprinklers failed and stairways were blocked in the building. From The Sun:
TOWER BLOCK DEATH TRAP London fire – Six confirmed dead and toll expected to rise after Grenfell Tower blaze left dozens of screaming residents with ‘no escape’ from flames after ‘fridge explosion’
Trapped residents jumped from the burning building while others lashed bedsheets together in a desperate attempt to escape the flames
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed six people have died but the death toll is expected to rise after a huge fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in West London just before 1am last night.
The 24 storey high tower block has 120 apartments.
Around 74 people have been taken to six hospitals in the capital with 20 in a critical condition.
A resident said the fire started on the fourth floor.
Residents are still trapped inside the building but there is no fear of the block collapsing.
The area around the tower has been closed off and around 200 firefighters are at the scene. Authorities say the cause of the fire is still not known.
Residents have been seen jumping from upper floors in scenes reminiscent of September 11.
Burning debris has been seen falling from the building.
London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared the blaze a “major incident”.
One witness told Sky they believed the fire was started by a faulty fridge.
Horrified witnesses told how they saw some families throwing children out of windows in an effort to save their lives from the inferno.
A local community leader says that nobody who lived on the top three residential floors has survived.
He said they are working with a missing list of "possibly hundreds" of residents, but that nobody who lived on the 21st residential floor or above survived.
The committee member, who asked not to be named, said: "I have been told that anyone past the 21st floor did not make it.
"The firefighters told them to stay where they were. "We have a list of missing people there are so many, it's possible there are more than 50, possibly hundreds.
"The cause of this fire is not known at this stage. We will be here all day and will provide further updates.
"We are working very closely with our colleagues in the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service to bring this situation under control."
Sadiq Khan has also demanded an explanation as to why residents were told to stay in their flats in the event of a fire.
Samira added: "I think the speed of the fire was the most shocking thing for everyone, how quick it literally went from zero to 100. Like it was literally just the fourth floor and that was bad but it was really minor, and that building is really big and the whole building was gone - even before it hit 1am the whole building was in flames.
"I saw people flying out of their balconies and windows. I saw a man who flew out of his window, I saw people screaming for help. We saw a lot of people jumping out that basically didn't make it.
"It was from the eighth floor and up, and that kind of floor you wouldn't really make it."
