In his thoughts conveyed to the nation the POTUS mentioned needing to study these issues and the need to "Cherish our History". Part of this history? The many statues across our city parks which remind us of the high cost paid so that we could come this far. It is fair to say the battles were both brutal and sacrificial on both sides. We should continue to honor the descendants of those who took the oath of office and served under chain of command. This, is the history we should cherish: our history of civil war, reconstruction, and our modern day state where slavery is something which ceased to exist so long ago.

The removal of Confederate symbols and statues of Confederate soldiers from the public space erases the memory of a very, very important season in our nation's forward movement into modernity and greater humanity.

The issue to be studied? Do "We the People" have a right to be upset about a political agenda which most Americans do not embrace? Our taxes pay for the maintenance of the parks and the statues erected. Our history should not be erased.

When statues are removed in the dead of night, citizens will march in the light of day. Without legal remedy, what other choice is available other than freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly?

Southern Gal

There was no peaceful assembly here (nor none ever intended) so save the bullshit. The W.N. and "alt right" came fully expecting trouble and hoping to fuck people up. They do our point of view a huge disservice anf dishonor.

I have two questions:

1. Who had the permit to protest?

2. Who granted that permit?

Aha! I found answers to my questions HERE:

A federal judge on Friday granted an injunction allowing the far-right Unite the Right rally to be held in Emancipation Park in the shadow of the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

U.S. District Court Judge Glen E. Conrad made the decision late Friday after a two-hour debate that followed a 30-minute meeting between the judge and attorneys for rally organizer Jason Kessler, the city of Charlottesville and downtown merchants.

Conrad said he granted the injunction because testimony indicated that Kessler could successfully prove that the city revoked his original permit based on his ideas.

Conrad said information presented at the hearing indicated the city’s decision was “based on the content of his speech” rather than public safety factors.

...[T]he city moved only the Unite the Right rally and not rallies planned in Justice and McGuffey parks by organizations opposed to Kessler’s beliefs....

Probably on the part of many there. But there would likely have been no violence had the counter-protestors not shown up.

Now, of course, Anti-Fa has their celebrated cause justified with one death (so far). Look who drove the vehicle. Sheesh.

That above said, should all "Southern" statues be removed? After that, then what? Mount Rushmore rechiseled? We see slave owners chiseled there.

We cannot erase history, but I supposed that we can revise it out.

Antifa etc came looking for trouble and a fight as well. Both sides had clubs with nails and such.

This is only going to get worse.

I don't believe any Southern or Confederate statues or monuments should be removed.

I agree with Epa and MR on this.

This nazi bullshit had nothing to do with history or Justice. They're just Nazis.

But they were apparently granted a permit. Constitutional?

MR has made an important point:

Antifa etc came looking for trouble and a fight as well. Both sides had clubs with nails and such.

Why were they allowed to have those weapons?

BTW, Melania's statement may not go far enough, but it is still an eloquent statement, IMO.

Both sides -- "all sides" -- yesterday were ugly in their hearts.

Yes, I agree there too. Antifa is always there with hate in their hearts.

And the left NEVER condemns Antifa.
