The End Of Free Speech In America?

Baron, at Gates of Vienna, has a very important post up today which analyzes John Conyers new piece of proposed legislation which would effectively ban criticism of Islam.

For my part, here's how I like to explain the problem:

Our society is made up of some very powerful institutions. Among these are

1) government
2) media
3) big business
4) religion

Now, we would never think that it would be wise to cut down on free speech which is critical of government, media, or big business. We are all in agreement that to do so would be give those institutions do much unchecked power.

So, why would we, even for a second, consider putting a stop to criticism of religion?

Here's an excerpt from Baron's post:

We have freedom of speech in this country, guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution. We’re free to say anything we like, with notable exceptions carved out after 220 years of jurisprudence — direct incitement to violence and shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater.

And we are about to add another exception: “hate speech”.

A generation of college students has come to maturity under a regime in which free speech most emphatically does not include the right to say anything that might be construed as hateful towards minorities, women, gays, disabled people, animals, trees, etc. These students are in the revolutionary vanguard of the softened-up, so that by the time Congress slips through a law that actually criminalizes “hate speech”, the constant repetition of the mantra “hate speech is not free speech” will have taken its toll. Everybody will already be used to the idea, will accept it as a given, and, after the required Supreme Court decision, the new, leaner version of the First Amendment will become the law of the land.

If you think I’m being paranoid or overreacting, then you haven’t seen Rep. John Conyers’ proposed kid-gloves-for-the-Koran resolution, H. Res. 288 (the full text is here):

Resolved, That the House of Representatives —
1.
condemns bigotry, acts of violence, and intolerance against any religious group, including our friends, neighbors, and citizens of the Islamic faith;
2.
declares that the civil rights and civil liberties of all individuals, including those of the Islamic faith, should be protected;
3.
recognizes that the Quran, the holy book of Islam, as any other holy book of any religion, should be treated with dignity and respect; and
4.
calls upon local, State, and Federal authorities to work to prevent bias-motivated crimes and acts against all individuals, including those of the Islamic faith. This is pernicious on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to start. It asserts that one person’s right to be respected overrides another person’s right to speak freely. It singles out a single religion, Islam, for special treatment. It accords the holy book of the Muslims more respect than is owed the flag of the United States. This is a CAIR-sponsored Trojan horse, ready to be rolled through the gates into the First Amendment.

Go read the whole thing. It is well worth your time.

We must put a stop to this Resolution.

Thanks, it was a relief to finally read that stupid thing he wrote just about 2 years ago.

I wouldn't worry too much about this, one it may never pass, two, it says nothing about 'criticism' of religion, or written or verbal assaults against a religion. Just stuff like, people of all religions, including Islam; have rights, and ya probably shouldn't piss on a Koran or something.

Also, it seems pretty clear that he's trying to be equal. If Muslims start demanding legal action for speech against Islam, the Christians and Jews will start demanding it against the Muslims' far more hateful speech, the whole bill is about being fair. THIS IS NOT EUROPE! They are insane, but even in the totaly dhimmified Sweden, the high court recently said a firm NO to Sharia Law taking over.

Not for another 75 years or more(if at all) will the USA have a situation like in Europe, where the Lioness Orianna was going to be put on trial for saying some nasty (oh no!) stuff in her book 'The Rage & The Pride'.
http://www.intl.orianafallacitrial.org/ , and this is just because some Italian Judge wanted to pass the buck down the line till later instead of just throwing the case out.

Conyers is just sucking up to his numerous Muslim constituents in MI. He's trying to head off physical attacks on the poor Muslims.

His name is even more mud now with his recent ethics problems. It looks like he'll get away with it (of course, he's a DemocRAT) but he will have not gained any friends. The book writers and the bloggers have nothing to worry about legally I'm quite positive. However, I'm sure some Jihadists out there will be looking to 'van Gogh' some of us, so I suggest everybody set their Site/Hit Counter/Meters to private so no one can see your traffic and usage stats and figure out your IP address and then track you down. Better safe than sorry... Blog On Warriors! :)

Finally, we have to keep mocking Islam, don't back down, they will, just like with the pig farm in Texas.
Give the Islam Comic book out, hear the hilarious catchy song about MoHomMADa 9 year old wife. See and hear it here: http://www.faithfreedom.org/comics/introduction.htm , Spread the word, they must be forced to confron the flaws in their religion, or else Earth will be fully Taliban in about 500 years.

Go for it!

I've been writing this idiot for over a month. I think I need to start writing other reps. who are interested in opposing these idiotic but dangerous measures. Honestly, if given enough press, I think this would sink Conyers or at least make him well known as one who is against the interests of freedom.

US Space,
I think this is a bigger deal than you do. When have you ever heard of anyone getting into trouble for mocking Christianity. this bill if passed would simply be used in defense of Islamofascism, because that's the direction of the politically correct momentum in our country.

Captain USpace said...

Pastorius,
You're right, no one in the US has gotten in trouble for faulting Christianity OR Islam, not in the US. Look at hate crime laws, they started as violent crimes against minorities or gays. But now, more and more minorities are being charged with violent hate crimes against whites. Lawyers, man, they will fight for it. While the US is corrupt, it has probably the least corrupt legal system in the world. I just think we are so far away from this, in a free speech way, read that idiot Conyer's piece again, it's all about physical stuff and non-discrimination and outright stuff like pissing on Mosques and stuff. We are very far away from Eurabia's ways, Conyer's made a point of adding Islam as an afterthought, it couldn't be applied just to Muslims in the US, thank God, like I said, I'd worry more about Jihadists tracking us down; again, set privacy controls on all hit counters. *wink*

Also, eFF Conyers, write to all the other Congressmen & Senators to vote against this...

Well, I hope you're right, US Space.

I know you're right that we have the best system. I just worry that we also have a tremendous amount of momentum in the other direction. It isn't so much what has been, as what the direction of the momentum is that scares me.

There's another way to look at this. Perhaps the influx of rational citizens fed up with the suicidal pc crowds will have a tempering if not reforming effect on the BNP.

Think positive. No need to alienate potential allies
