47 And Never Been Kissed

Not the usual IBA fare, but this is a cool story:

"American Idol" isn't the only launching pad for aspiring singers. Across the pond, "Britain's Got Talent" scored a huge boost in the Buzz after an unassuming contestant gave an amazing performance.

Susan Boyle (remember that name) became a Web phenomenon after singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. The performance brought the audience to its feet and left the judges (including Simon Cowell) either speechless or in tears.

Before going on stage, Ms. Boyle admitted some self-deprecating facts about herself (she's never been kissed and lives alone with her cat, Pebbles). For those reasons and more, audiences were expecting the female William Hung. They were wrong.

Lookups on the sudden star posted huge gains. A no-name just the other day, Ms. Boyle quickly surged into our top 5,000 overall searches. Blogs and gossip rags went wild. The Mirror jumped on the story, reporting that while Ms. Boyle thought she "looked like a garage" on TV, she received a standing ovation when she showed up at her local church.

Other sources write that as a child, Ms. Boyle was the target of bullies because of a disability. But, with her newfound fame, she is getting the last laugh. In fact, she's already meeting with officials from Mr. Cowell's Sony BMG label. This may have been the first you've heard of her, but it certainly won't be the last. You can watch her performance below...

Just listen to that voice. Ethereal, passionate. Those words are words she sings from the depths of her soul, unashamed. All those sniggering beauties in the audience....how many times in her life did Susan hear the jokes about her looks, about her name? And still, the happiness that beams from her eyes. At some time, long ago, she just accepted her lot in life, and sand her heart out anyway, in spite of the ridicule and the rejection.

Even Simon Scowell fell in love with her. Watch the unfeigned surprise cross his brow and he realizes immediately what a talent she is. He isn't looking for the next hot thing, the next pop idol, but for talent. She had her revenge in song, and they fell, enthralled at another kind of beauty. God bless the west, where even the ugliest of us women don't have to hide ourselves under a black bag of shame.

The shame was on the faces of the beautiful.
Good on you, Susan!

Seems these days, people's "15 minutes in the spotlight" has increased in value.

Nothing wrong with that. These outlets for the regular joe on the street, is a good thing.

Christine,
It is the greatest. I love that the audience is the show now.

We are quite literally making our own entertainment now.

In fact, obviously, that's part of what this blog is.

I get bored with TV. I'd rather create my own stuff. I write songs, scripts, novels, do a radio show, and write this blog.

sometimes I sell stuff, but rarely. But, the act of creation makes my life fill with joy.

I think she can sing even better. She went on the stage untrained and very emotional and I don't think it is the best she can do. Great story indeed.

Jaco, we do indeed have the same brain or something. I was going to post this after writing the following essay, so here it is:

Wow, first Paul Potts and now Susan Boyle, who reminds me a bit of the late and oh so great Tessie O'Shea. (Look her up!) Tessie wasn't what's usually considered a beauty either, but she turned it to her advantage and became queen of the clubs and the music halls. May Susan enjoy her new level of success and show 'em all!

There's a longer version of the song, Jewel?

If so, I'll put it up. Will you send it to me in email?

Epam, if you want the whole version of the song including the into, which Susan may not have included in her performance, google Patti Lupone Les Miserables I Dreamed and you'll get that. (Lupone looks unnervingly like Rand, btw.) Lupone's performances are my faves, though I have to say Susan keeps up with her real well.
